  1. Hi! Agreed, this disease is not at all straightforward. Can you get the blood test done? You have to do it while you're eating gluten but that way at least you would know whether you need to be gluten-free or not.
  2. I like Almond Breeze milk, but I'm so early on this diet I can't tell if it's causing me problems. Anyone else tried this?
  3. Jason - I'm brand new to this, too, and some days I feel okay with it all and other days I wake up wanting to rage against the dying of the life I had before diagnosis. Some days I feel physically fantastic, and other days - like today - I can barely bring myself to walk on the treadmill. Weird as it sounds, I'm trying to be more zen about the shifts between...
  4. Takala: Wow. First, I'm really, really sorry you had to go through all that. Some people in the medical field (and other fields, to be fair) have absolutely no human touch at all. I always wonder how people like that end up in fields that are not only meant to help people, but also put them in contact with a lot of stressed-out and anxious strangers every...
  5. First, a disclaimer: I've said it before here and I'll say it again, but I am two weeks into gluten-free living and not an expert on that (although I have been blowing off my writing to read about celiac disease for the past month, and holy cow, is there a lot of information out there!). I do, however, know a decent amount about nutrition and exercise, so...
  6. I had the endoscopy and colonoscopy a couple of weeks ago. It isn't a big deal, and my mom (also a doctor, not a GI) told me it would be a good thing to do because a lot of times - as has been demonstrated here - celiac is not the only problem. It's up to you, of course, but I feel better having had it done because I know I don't also have any other problems...
  7. I don't know how others around here feel about these, but I also have two grocery shopping guides I haul around with me everywhere. The Gluten Free Mall and gluten free.com both sell them. I still check ingredients at the store, and I've e-mailed or called several companies to ask about their ingredients and manufacturing processes, but the guides help me...
  8. I haven't had this experience, because I haven't been gluten-free as long as you have, but this makes me really happy. I hope I get this energy burst soon! I've heard this from other people, too, who aren't necessarily on this board. A couple of us here are still struggling with our energy levels, but I'm looking forward to knocking minutes off my long runs...
  9. I think a lot of people have problems with not menstruating when their bodies aren't being adequately nourished, which is certainly a problem for a great many celiacs, especially pre-diagnosis.
  10. That is completely ridiculous and outrageous, and I'm sorry you and your son are having to deal with that level of stupidity. Is there someone higher on the chain of command you can call and pester about this? I think the FDA needs to require that everything meant for human consumption needs to be labeled for containing not only gluten, but dairy, eggs...
  11. According to my grocery shopping guide, Listerine Antiseptic Mouthwash is fine. Is that true in others' experiences?
  12. Hi! I have, indeed, had joint and knee problems. I'm only off gluten for about a week and a half (like I said, BRAND NEW at this, but the exercise/nutrition stuff is something I do have a bit of a background in). I've noticed a tiny bit of an improvement, but the thing that's helped the most is actually yoga. I run a lot, and that tends to tighten the IT...
  13. I'm having this problem, too, but haven't been off gluten long enough to know how long it takes. However, if you're trying to gain weight (last summer I was right where you are now) and you're tired all the time, you might also be overexercising. I had to learn that the hard way, and had to learn to scale it back, especially when I felt worn out. That alone...
  14. Thanks to both of you! I took all the above advice - to stock up on food, look up restaurants ahead of time, and not to stress too much - and had a good time. I did get sick from food once, but not because of the gluten - it was just bad food! I appreciate your responses!
  15. It seems that, with so many celiacs also being lactose intolerant, that maybe we're just not getting enough probiotics from our food, especially from yogurt. I love yogurt and eat at least a serving of it a day, but I'm lucky in my tolerance for lactose, and I also take a probiotic supplement. When I was a kid I had to take long courses of antibiotics for...
  16. Oh, I forgot to mention - I would (and have) cut out diet sodas. It's true that diet soda has no calories, but it can often spur hunger or a craving for sweets. I drink nothing but water now, with the occasional cup of tea, which sounds joyless, but it isn't! I feel better having cut out soda. Drinking water rather than soda just goes along with the whole...

    ARCHIVED Low Endurance?

I've been having this problem, too. I've only been gluten-free for a little over a week, but I was having this problem when I was eating gluten, too. I haven't seen an improvement in this area yet, but I understand that I will, eventually. I love to exercise and push myself, but haven't had it for the last couple of months. Have you had your iron and vitamin...
  18. Hi! Can your GYN refer you to a gastroenterologist, or can you find an internist who can handle that? Good luck!
  19. Okay, you need to talk to your doctor. I'd call today and set up an appointment. Ask to have your thyroid checked, because a lot of celiacs have thyroid problems. Jumping rope 25 minutes three times a week is good, but can you add in a 20-30 minute walk on other days as well? Don't go into an extreme exercise regimen - especially without help from a trained...
  20. Hi! I'm not a vegetarian, but my partner and I try not to eat meat too often, for health and environmental reasons (and my body doesn't make the enzymes to digest red meat, so that's not an option anyway - just chicken and fish when we do eat meat). We make tons of vegetarian food, and a lot of it is naturally gluten-free, like rice- and quinoa-based dishes...
  21. Agreed! It's about cutting down - or entirely eliminating - processed foods, and about getting exercise. It isn't easy, but it's worth it. I heard Jillian Michaels (one of the trainers from The Biggest Loser) say, if it doesn't come from the ground or have a mother, don't eat it (so, there's no Doritos tree or mom, so stay away from those). Drink water instead...
  22. Hi! I just asked my (wonderful! Incredibly supportive and loving!) partner what he'd say to you, and he said it's not that bad for him, really. He said to make sure you're really good about wiping up crumbs and doing your own dishes if you eat gluten-y things, and to be careful about whether gluten-full foods can fall on or touch the gluten-free things. He...
  23. Hello! I'm hoping to find other celiacs in Gainesville, FL. I haven't had any luck tracking down a support group here. Does anyone know if one exists? Are there other celiacs around here who would want to meet?
  24. Hi! I've only been gluten-free since Saturday, and tomorrow I leave for a beach trip in South Florida with my family, and I'm terrified. I don't want gluten coming near me, of course (I think some snuck in yesterday somehow, and that's not helping me feel better), and I'm really worried about being able to enjoy myself when food is going to be a constant...
  25. Hi! This is probably a stupid question, but I'm brand new to this disease and trying desperately to get everything right. I live with my wonderful non-celiac boyfriend, and today I found a gluten-free frozen pizza I'm excited about. We figured we'd have a pizza night soon, and so my question is this: is it okay to bake our pizzas in the oven at the same time...
