ARCHIVED Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome- Anyone Heard Of This (a.k.a. The Nutcracker Syndrome)
FMcGee replied to dagreen's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yeah, percocet won't help. The problem is that nerve damage to the stomach (mine was caused by my endoscopy) means the stomach doesn't empty out, and so food just sits there, making you feel full and sick. It also causes my blood sugar level to bounce all over the place. The test is a stomach-emptying test. You go in on an empty stomach, and they give you... -

This sounds like exactly what I have, which the doctors think is probably gastroparesis (I'm getting tested in a couple of weeks), not SMA. Have you seen your doctor? The trick with gastroparesis seems to be eating an extremely low-fiber diet, which sounds like hell to me, but that's life, I guess. -
ARCHIVED Anyone React To Gluten Free Oats?
FMcGee replied to Crayons574's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This is essentially exactly what my dietician just told me! She said it's not the oats themselves that some people react to, it's their extremely high fiber content, and that if you rarely at them before going gluten-free, you shouldn't start until you've worked up to them, which is why it takes so many people some time to tolerate them. It's always interesting... -
I second ravenwoodglass - go find a doctor. Medicaid, ER - both good suggestions. Hopefully we'll get the healthcare system worked out in this country so people don't have to suffer. But anyway. There's no way anyone on the internet who hasn't actually seen you, and who may or may not have medical knowledge, can substantially help you from here, much as we...

I just found out I might have gastroparesis and am kind of panicking. What am I supposed to eat? Will it go away? I've been maintaining a good attitude with the celiac stuff but this is feeling very last-straw. Help!

Orange juice for water! That is a revelation! I am trying that ASAP. I LOVE orange-flavored things (I am a Florida girl, after all). Placing my Kinnickinnick order now... -

Wow, I wonder if I have this? I'm not underweight, but I'm mostly muscle, and I was underweight until I made a pretty determined effort to put some weight back on, about six months ago, as I felt completely miserable all the time. Now I'm eating gluten-free, but I feel this nausea a lot of the time. I used to be hungry all the time, but now I go for four... -
Definitely! Cakes are serious business, so multiple comparisons are only sensible!

Thanks! I'm going to make those this weekend - they look delicious!

ARCHIVED Anyone React To Gluten Free Oats?
FMcGee replied to Crayons574's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Good to know! I didn't know that, about the immune system taking two weeks to stop reacting. Thanks very much! -
Ha! Right - if we ever dine together, we can go to Bonefish! Where I will not order salmon! Thanks for the congratulations! We're going to get married in my parents' back yard. It's really beautiful - my dad loves gardening and has done a great job with it. I haven't picked a dress, but I probably won't go for the traditional white gown, because I don...

I also have the unfortunate disadvantage of despising salmon, and being unable to eat greasy/cheesy food. I think Outback and I just don't get along, which shouldn't influence anyone else's feelings about it!

Excellent! Thank you! I may try this tonight!

ARCHIVED Anyone React To Gluten Free Oats?
FMcGee replied to Crayons574's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
How long are people supposed to wait before trying oats, after going gluten-free? I miss them a lot and really want to try them again, but I'm worried. It's only been three weeks for me, and my symptoms haven't all cleared up yet. My boyfriend bought me a (very expensive) box of gluten-free oats but my gut (hee) says to wait a bit longer. Am I being paranoid... -
Not to be all 1980s stereotypical therapist, but have you told him exactly how this all makes you feel? I think sometimes people just need to hear that, and then they'll realize their behavior is really diminishing someone else's quality of life. Also, erm... is he willing to do other things for you? So that you feel less, uh, deprived? Or is he just totally...

This sounds like a fun dish to experiment with! Can it be done without cheese? I don't tolerate cheese well. Thanks!

ARCHIVED Biopsy - I'm Nervous
FMcGee replied to mikehall117's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would go with sedation. It's what I had, but I didn't have a choice, because I was also having a colonoscopy, but I would have picked sedation anyway, because I... am a world-class wuss. And proud of it! -
ARCHIVED Husband Just Diagnosed With Celiac
FMcGee replied to taypaul's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It takes awhile to feel better. I've been gluten-free since May 8 and still can't tolerate eating a lot of food at once (I've broken dinner down into a couple of snack-sized meals instead), and I still have stomach pains and other symptoms. They're slowly going away, but it takes awhile. It sounds like your wife is going through a grieving phase, which is... -
If you go to Outback, be prepared with elastic-band pants and some lipitor. I'm really glad it has a gluten-free menu, but it is definitely not the place to go for healthy eating! My boyfriend tells me he's always thought of it as a treat (not one I can have, though, because I can't digest red meat) rather than a default dinner option.

ARCHIVED gluten-free Wedding Cakes?
FMcGee posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi! Do any of you know of anyone who does gluten-free wedding cakes between Winchester, VA and Washington DC? The boy popped the question, and since we're low-maintenance types, the cake will probably be the biggest hassle, and I might as well get that out of the way early. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks! -
ARCHIVED Please Help! Self Diagnosed Myself With Celiac Disease
FMcGee replied to MomOf2PrettyGirls's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'd get tested, honestly. It's good to know this kind of thing. You'd have to eat gluten, but it might be worth it. It's probably at least worth talking to a doctor about. -
ARCHIVED It Would Help To Have Some Happy (or Working On It) Anectdotes
FMcGee replied to mellowyellowmushroom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm glad your mom is being helpful. I hope your family can be empathetic and realize that you're the one who has to give up the food you love forever, not them. Dads can sometimes freak out like that. A little panic on his part is normal, I think; hostility is different. If there's hostility, it might be time for a talk. They can't be actively glutening you... -

It's really hard at first, but I've found that engaging some friends in the Great gluten-free Cooking Adventure has made this more fun. A friend came over last night with some garbanzo flour and a recipe he thought I'd like to make with it. Other friends have enthusiastically gone to Asian/Indian markets with me to scout new, naturally gluten-free foods.... -
ARCHIVED 5 Kitchen Essentials For A gluten-free Kitchen?
FMcGee replied to grnjellyshoes's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Julia Child! Love her. We use plastic cutting boards, and I've put them through the dishwasher - is it necessary to get new ones, or do I only need to if they're wood?
