Hey there are 2 Susan's in this thread!!! But just to let you know Megan, this Susan also eats at PF Changs in Boston, I've had great experiences there too (except for parking!).
Have you tried Elephant Walk in Cambridge, they are supposed to have a gluten-free menu and also if you like Indian, the Bombay Club offers gluten-free food as well, let me say I've not been to Elephant Walk but am dying to try it and I've actually eaten at Bombay Club prior to being gluten-free and the food was wonderful (great Sunday brunch).

I'm going to have both done in November (living in an area with a small community hospital they are backed up and that is the soonest I can get it). I've been so ill that I honestly can't wait to have them in hopes they will turn up something (easy to fix I hope).
I saw my GI doctor yesterday and she said when she does them she likes her patients "comfortable". I asked what that exactly meant and she said, as long as your BP and heart rate are fine I like you completely out. She said the prep day is WAAAAAY worse then the actually scoping, so be prepared for that. She did say I was only going to have a modified prep day because I have the runs right now about 7 times a day!
I've been gluten-free for a year (although with no formal diagnoses) so they won't be looking for signs of Celiac on me but just about everything else. I do have the option of starting to eat gluten again if I'm looking for a formal Celiac diagnoses but the Dr. said that was my call, she does believe I'm at the very least, gluten sensitive.
Anyhow good luck, but from what I hear, you'll be fine!

Hi Megan,
Wow I eat at the Legal Seafoods in Copley Place and the one in Park Square all the time and I've never ever had a problem (oh, I've also been to the one at South Shore Mall too and no problems there either).
They take allergies and food intolerances so seriously there, I often eat with my daughter who has a life threatening allergy to peanuts and tree nuts and they are so careful with both of us.
Our waiter always asks me too if I want the bread brought to the table, I'm assuming he means do I want it anywhere near me since I can't have it. I always say yes because my daughter loves bread.
I'd say I've tried almost every dish on their gluten-free menu and I've never been glutened. I'm sure any place can make a mistake but I've never been served the veggies with seasoning, they have never goofed with me and I'd say I eat there at least once a month.
I do however make a fairly big deal about the gluten thing because I am very sensitive to gluten-free. Even at legal Seafoods I tell the hostess when I come in that I'd like the gluten-free free menu and I also tell the hostess that I'd like the manager to stop by my table (I now know him so well that he stopped by last time and said, "Hi Susan!". When the waiter comes to take our order, I tell them I'm ordering from the gluten-free menu and as they write down my order I say, "please mark it clearly as gluten-free food". They do and again, I've never had a problem.
They are this careful with my daughters allergies as well. I hope with the error that happened with you that you called the manager over to discuss this, because on their menu's and on their web sites they make a point of how seriously they take allergies/food intolerances and they should have been informed that an error happened. My feeling is that when mistakes happen at places that bill themselves to being very careful with this sort of thing, the management needs to know so they can correct it, teach the particular server, etc.
I'm sorry this happened to you, I love Legal and its my one fall back restaurant.

About 6 years ago I got the flu, I was sick for 17 days, in bed for about 10 of those. Since then I have gotten a flu shot and I've never been sick since, maybe a tiny cold but I've not once had the flu, I'm not taking a chance with that again.

PS - every time I get a flu shot I get a cold about a week later, the makers of the flu shot say the vaccine is not "live" so it is impossible to get a mild case of the flu from it. Personally I get it at the local drug store and stand in line with about 200 other people and I think they must breathe their germs on me!

I am one that does not trust Frito or Lays, both make me sick every single time when I eat them... I'm not saying its definately gluten but there is something in them that does not agree with me. I can eat other brands of potato chips with no problems at all so its not potatoes or the greasy-ness of them. Also Soy Crisps bother me too.
I have no problems with Cape Cod Potato chips or Hain products. Again I'm not sure if its gluten or something else.

I've not taken any of their trips but I did hear on another list they are fun and well organized. What the heck, cruises are fun, you are going to a great part of the world and you won't have to worry about food! Sounds perfect! Have fun, I can't wait to hear your report!

I use San-J too and like it. For some reason if I'm forced to eat La Choy I get sick every single time, they say its gluten-free but it certainly does a number on me.

Well, hmmm... yes its being sensitive but so what, we all get fed up at times and I totally understand where you are coming from. I'm not sure if you meant for your letter to be humorous (I really do understand you are annoyed with that situation), but it did make me laugh (the "this is Lori, she's celiac" part) so thanks for the laugh.
My daughter has a life threatening peanut/tree nut allergy and I have to be gluten-free and my mom calls us "pain's in the a** and hard to feed", she acts like this is a lifestyle choice and not a medical one. And even if it was a lifestyle choice, its my life and I get to make the choices!
My mom is 80 and also just found out she needs to be gluten-free but her symptoms are very mild so when we get together as a family and go out to dinner she will eat anything and not suffer the next day and wonders why I won't do the same. She has all the info about celiac disease but because she is self diagnosed she just does it sometimes (when she gets the runs).
Anyhow I talked to her and she said she will stop saying that sort of stuff, I laid the guilt trip on her about she is offending her grand daughter.
Sometimes its hard to get thru to people.

Whole foods gluten-free stuff is brought into the store frozen... I've found that if I get to the store and they are out of corn bread if I ask at the bakery they will go on the back freezer and bring some out for me (if they have it I often buy about 6 at a time because Whole Foods is about 45 minutes away from me so I stock up).
So often when I get the pizza its frozen, I take it home put it on the counter and a day or 2 later its mildew. There are 2 crusts in the bag, I usually eat the first one that day but the second one is usually totally mildew by day 2.

Maya, Most of the Whole Foods on the east coast have these items already. I really love them too however they are expensive, I only buy them once in a great while because in our store most items are just under $7. a lot of money for a loaf of bread. I'm pretty sure most have dairy in them and they all can contain nuts.
My only other complaint is that some of them seem to mildew quickly, the pizza crust has gotten mildew on it by the second day and this has happened to me twice now. But they are really good tasting. Also our Whole Foods doesn't have that many or maybe they sell out really quick, they have a tiny rack for all the gluten free stuff (including other brands not just whole foods) and often when I go there its only got 1 of item on it of maybe 6 different things. So for example, there will be one corn bread, 1 pizza crust, 1 box of cookies, etc. They never have much on the rack.

My daugher has a life threaten allergy to peanuts and tree nuts and wants to try gluten-free (having some digestive issues) and we can't really. She's a kid and wants snacks, cereal, breads, cookies, crackers.
I've been making a ton of calls over the past few days and I'm at the point where its really getting hard. All Gluten free pantry and Bob's Red Mill flour does have the chance of having nuts in them via cross comtamination. So they are all out. Most every gluten-free sort of snack/flour is out. I heard E-nerg cookies are peanut and nut free but haven't checked yet.
But does anyone else have these problems?? I'm posting this to all the lists I'm on so if you read it a few times sorry but I want to make sure everyone knows this and hopefully find some new sources.

Oh dear, I eat a ton of wintergreen altoids and I just assumed (stupid i know) that they are gluten-free. (because I read that Altoids were so I thought it meant all altoids) I guess I better go read the label.

The simple answer is you can't "make him" or even convince him. My mother has celiac disease and only does gluten-free "sometimes" which really means hardly ever..... only when her runs get bad otherwise she's eating anything she wants too.
I've given her the books on Celiac, sent her to web sites, etc. She doesn't want to. So thats that. My mother is a very inteligent woman and it shocks me how dumb she is on this issue but thats her choice.
I've given up trying, I've begged, lectured, informed, explained and I'm just done with it. She has to run her life how she sees fit. However I'm pretty hard line about it. When she does get the runs and complains about it, I usually cut her off and say, "Mom we know exactly why you have them and exactly how to fix them." and then I move to another subject.

I use to take various meds for my runs but now I'm totally off them (the gluten-free diet helped but not totally) and I take Citracil every day. They make a new flavor, chocolate that you mix with milk and its like a shake. (well you have to drink it right away otherwise it starts to thicken) I drink it once a day and I have no more runs. It tastes good and I like it way better then the orange stuff.
If I happen to get glutend and the runs come back I drink it 3 times a day for a few days and it works like a charm. It is not a medicine but like vegatable celulose (fiber) and is actually good for your system. You can drink it every single day with no ill effects as a matter of fact they think that the more fiber in your diet the less chance you have at getting colon cancer later on.
Use Citracel over Metamucil because Metamucil causes gas, Citracel does not.

My boyfriend does not have celiac disease and he's so considerate of my celiac disease, its how love is, or should be.
Honestly I don't think the celiac disease thing makes a bit of difference.. its hard enough to find someone you love to limit your search to those who have the same disease as you, well, thats pretty limiting. Not to mention that yes it would be easier to keep the kitchen clean but how important is that in the whole scheme of things. At home when my bf is here we don't have any non gluten-free issues because I do most of the cooking and I cook gluten-free. He eats what I put on the table!
And as far as the whole explaining thing... well really don't you only have to do that once, or at least for a short time... I'd say it took my bf about a month to "get it" and now its never discussed any more. He gets it, I get it and when we go out we both explain it to the place we are.
So whats the big deal I'd say that if you have a bf that is fighting you on what you can eat, or says "can't you do it this one time" its time for a new bf. Mine would never suggest such a thing and has been the most supportive person in my life as far as my celiac disease goes.

In my opinion there is something toxic about all farm raised salmon, just just the coloring. I only eat wild salmon, yes its hugely expensive, but I eat way smaller amounts.

What a beautiful happy little girl! Many best wishes for you both. When I read about people having a baby I always get choked up and reflect on the day my daughter was born, almost 14 years ago. She has been the single most wonderful gift of my life. I'm sure your daughter will fill that niche for you! Enjoy, try and get some rest and accept offers of help!

I get a lot of fiber thru Citracel. I tried Metamucil but it causes tons of gas, the Citracil product says right on it that it does not ferment in your belly and thats been my experience. I tolerate it very well.
