  1. So so sorry this has been so painful and difficult for you! Jeesh it would be nice if our bodies would not be so contrary and hard to figure out! I really don't know if this will help, because it sounds like there could be so many issues it's just hard to tell what's really going on in your body. But, I guess I'll share a couple things from my family...
  2. Okay, personal question. How much do you know about him and girls? He's 16 now, you said, yes? If he's kissing any girls that eat gluten, or skin that has glutened lotion on it, that can actually give him enough gluten to react to, odd as that is. Might be a gluten ingestion issue that's, well, not food related. I'm afraid my only personal experience...
  3. Ugh, yes. My car was a big one. The door handle, steering wheel, gear shift, windshield wiper knob - anything that my husband touched after he stopped for fast food somewhere. Argh. Arms of a couch at a friends house - her hubby used to always eat his sandwiches there and lay his hand on the arm rest and gluten it. She had to really smack him for...
  4. I ended up making the decision based on what I thought was most likely needed in an emergency. So I picked a couple of the foods that I react more severely to, as an example. Doctors should be able to recognize an allergic reaction, with that knowledge. Also picked a couple of the medications that I react to that are often administered in situations involving...
  5. What are all the corn derived products that you react to, just out of curiosity? Xanthan gum has been known to cause some pretty intense gastro symptoms in a lot of people (along with the other gums alike guar and arabic). Colorings and preservatives have been known to do the same, especially annatto. So I wonder if perhaps you aren't reacting to...
  6. You've definitely got the right idea in avoiding hand sanitizer - it's not considered all that effective at eliminating gluten. There was a Open Original Shared Link on what was effective to eliminate peanut proteins - likely at least partly applicable for gluten protein - and soap and water was much more effective than hand sanitizer. I'm assuming because...

    ARCHIVED Diagnosed...now What?

You might also want to check on the brand of rice cakes are you eating. Some of them are not always gluten free. As an example, Quaker oats, as I understand it, processes their rice cakes in a facility that also processes wheat and oats. Their website just says: Since so many of our products contain grain ingredients and many products are made in the...
  8. I guess I'd set it up like this, for processed food. Rating from lowest risk of gluten issues to highest risk (sort of): gluten-free food made in a dedicated gluten-free facility and certified gluten free (certified from the GFCO or the CSA) - safest...and most expensive, of course. gluten-free food made in a dedicated facility and tested...
  9. 100% of the time my family has gone out, quick, disinterested discussion plus 'I'm sure we can accommodate you' has translated into 'Not understanding allergies or food sensitivities in any way, we'll whip something up and you'll realize how stupid you were for thinking we had to go through all this extra care.' Followed by either an 'I am so sorry...
  10. Interesting. Have you ever tried just straight aspirin? Pepto-bismal has salicylic acid (what's in willow bark, and what aspirin was based on when it was created) along with the gut easing ingredients. I wonder if it might help enhance the effects, or if it might do more for headaches than the Bismuth subsalicylate.
  11. It wouldn't be a bad idea to check with the doctor, but just in terms of changes? Extreme, quick changes within days are within normal parameters. It's crazy, isn't it? I started losing weight too when I went gluten free, within days. I was losing 1 - 1 1/2 pounds a day for quite a while - I was overweight, too, when I was diagnosed. By 6 months, I believe...
  12. With re: to gluten intolerance, the short answer is that nobody knows much about it. They don't know why gluten intolerance happens, or how it works. I know people with it who have mild problems, and people who are so sensitive that they rival some of the more sensitive celiacs I know of. Perhaps they are false negative celiacs, perhaps not. Truly - nobody...
  13. It's always so nice when our bodies are consistent on these things, isn't it? Very helpful to figure out this sort of thing! Although sorry about the caffeine issue, there. Time to just make sure and get lots of sleep without getting a pick-me-up later!
  14. How many other people in the family were tested when your daughter was diagnosed? If your doctor did not mention, all siblings and parents should have been tested at that point. With no symptoms, the chances are about 1 in 22 that you, your spouse, or your children will have celiac disease. With symptoms, the chances are even greater. And with it in the...
  15. My daughter (11 at the time and a diagnosed celiac) started feeling sicker around 6 months gluten free, and a big part of hers definitely seemed to be that she was becoming more sensitive to gluten than before. Not only did we have to be more careful with gluten cc, but she also started having trouble with some of the gluten free products we used. gluten...
  16. Don't know if this is the reason, but here's what we have discovered while trying to figure out why myself and my daughter were both still reacting while on a gluten-free diet. 1. gluten-free food is not actually free from gluten. It's 'really, really, really low gluten.' Basically, the term gluten free defines what the maximum amount of gluten allowed...
  17. I was diagnosed at 38, and I noticed a change within days. Some here don't seem to have any change for weeks, however. But if you are having the runs right after you eat, I think that might possibly indicate that you're getting something that's making your body unhappy. It could be gluten or could be lactose (many of us are lactose intolerant when we...
  18. Heard of caffeine sensitivity, but thankfully not an issue for me. Maybe you could try the same dinner with caffeine free pepsi and see how it goes? Just to double check that it's not something else in the pepsi that got ya?
  19. In my experience, no. Larger amounts make me much, much sicker. There is an explanation for your experience, however. It's likely that you're experiencing what many of us do: once you've gone gluten free, when you get gluten, it's a LOT worse than it was before. A lot of people have had Fairy Dancer's experience. They went gluten-free, found out they...
  20. Was your child gluten free and THEN went on a 30 day challenge? If that's the case, the 30 day challenge may not have been long enough. A number of people here have had to consume gluten for 6-12 weeks before they had enough damage to test positive for the disease. 30 days really isn't enough for a good challenge, IF your child has been gluten-free for a...
  21. I'd agree with everyone here: it could be celiac disease, yes. And could be something else too, yes. the stomach problems seem to be common for a lot of us with food issues of some kind or another (surprising how often doctors don't investigate this too much. You'd think stomach pain would equal 'investigate what is going IN the stomach' first, but that logic...

    ARCHIVED Diagnosed...now What?

Re: bad teeth - yeah, that can be an issue. Both my children had this issue and both have gluten problems. Re: foods - would it be possible to list what your eating right now? What your cooking process is? Like what pots you use, what else is cooking at the same time? What items you might share with a spouse? Your hygiene products that can come into...
  23. There should have been more test results, yeah, if he did it right. The term 'anti-tissue transglutaminase' is actually not completely specific. There are two kinds that are usually tested in celiac blood panels: IgA and IgG. There's also the IgA Antiendomysial Antibodies test, AND you should have been given the Total Serum IgA test to make sure you are not...
  24. I did find this site that might be of some use to get you started in the right direction, possibly. Open Original Shared Link This has links to a Brazilian celiac association and some information about being gluten free in Brazil. :-) I also have a friend who loves to travel but has children with so many allergies to food that they can't safely...
