  1. Oh yes, all of the flours, etc. are available mail order. I use mostly Bob's Red Mill because I can get larger amounts. I mill my own rice flours but the tapioca I buy.
  2. I pulled this recipe provided by Laurie of another post and used it. It is so good that I bake a loaf every other day in my machine. You might try adjusting the flax up a little and using it. gluten-free Bread I have a Welbilt too; it works great every time. Even though it makes a 1.5 lb loaf, when I make gluten-free bread, I only make a 1 lb loaf. I...
  3. This time I had a steak with a baked potato (they use real butter, not the soy margarine), and steamed vegetables. I even had a salad and did not react. It was also enough food for me to get a take-home box and eat the rest for my dinner that night. They also do a wonderful dish that is a modified version of their portabella chicken. They use fresh mushrooms...
  4. I had the neatest thing happen this last week. I went into a local restaurant (Longhorn's in this case) and set my restaurant card out so that I could show it to the waiter. A manager walked by my table, took two steps back, pointed to the card and said "Gluten, Ma'am?" I said yes and he proceded to tell me about some of the things they did for other...
  5. Are nightmares just part of the mix? I have had them for years. Periodically they get really strange...last night I delivered five babies in one night and kept losing them in the bed. It was hilarious to remember the next morning trying to nurse all those babies. My poor aging mother was having a time helping me keep up with all those tiny babies. For a...
  6. Are you feeling even more overwhelmed yet? Take courage. The first three or four months are the toughest. You are still trying to figure out what you can and cannot eat. Unfortunately, this also means you are more likely to accidentally get into something. It is not hard once you get into a pattern of shopping. You figure out what you can have, verify...
  7. Try not using quite so much flax seed. I use about 1/3 cup to 2 cups gluten-free flour. I also add 2 tsp of xanthan gum, so you may need to adjust a little. I mill my flax so that it is not seedy. Don't know if soaking accomplishes the same thing. One thought, could you order xanthan gum from somewhere here in the states or Europe or would the shipping...

    ARCHIVED Nausea

Since I try to use as many generic medications as possible due to the cost difference, I have found the at only way to be certain is to contact the individual manufacturer. Some of the same drugs made by different companies are gluten-free/not gluten-free according to the manufacuring process. I keep a separate tab in my notebook to track the ones I have...
  9. oh, great! I had not even thought about kissing a husband who is celiac disease and having gluten-containing lipstick or makeup on. Good thing I am the celiac disease patient and not him...I don't have to worry about him having lipstick of any kind on. Come to think of it, that would hold true of Grandma kissing the grandaughter as well, wouldn't it?...
  10. To the one who was also having the fibromyalgia symptoms...those will mediate over time as well. How much they mediate will depend on how long and how badly you have had them. Mine were debilitating and now I can actually sit here and write these notes (well, at least until that front comes through here tomorrow anyway). I get into gluten accidentally, and...
  11. Two months, three months, you guys are just getting started. Let your bodies heal. This stuff did not do its damage in a month or two and it won't heal up that quickly. The information about getting tested for other allergies is really good. I did not see significant changes in my neurological symptoms until I stopped all soy as well. We initially stopped...
  12. That "just before your time" thing is real. I wondered this week why I was suddenly having more of a problem. Since I am at that "next time of life" change and am very irregular, it never dawned on me that that might be the problem. Sure enough, I spotted a couple of days this week and afterward the problem leveled back out again. The thoughts by the...
  13. Please don't be embarrassed about asking such a question. Many of us deal with this and worse. I have had this problem for years. It is a family problem that we suspect is somewhere related to the malabsorption issues with celiac disease. That means that it could be associated with your vitamins, so definitely follow up there. Talk with your doctor. Try...
  14. There are several posts on this one with good information. One thing I would suggest is that you get a machine with a small, upright loaf pan instead of a larger horizontal one. I find that the breads in my machine are great the first day or so but are no better than the storebought by day three. It works better to mix enough of the dry ingredients except...
  15. My symptoms "began" in earnest 9 yrs ago with chronic fatigue and multiple rounds of EBV. Then came the fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism, and the neurological problems. Finally, the celiac disease/DH diagnosis came almost two years ago. If I had known then what I know now, I could have done so much to prevent the damage! The CFS/FMS symptoms will gradually...
  16. It is so hard for some people to accept that an "allergy" to something like wheat can cause all these problems. No getting support from family and friends seems to be a common problem. Keep your chin up and do what you know you have to do. Don't forget to encourage your family members to get tested since this is after all a genetic problem. That might get...
  17. Yes, it can take much more than 10 days for the symptoms to go away. I had an accidental gluten ingestion in August and am just now down to the last two or three spots healing. Usually the mouth sores come and go for a while before finally completely healing. I get both the canker sore type and the red painful ones. Is there any chance that your spots...
  18. The only one who can make that decision for you is you. All the rest of us can do is encourage you and share our thoughts. It sounds as though you are doubting yourself enough to want to be absolutely certain. If you think you will second guess yourself for the next few months or years, go for the challenge. Some of the rest of us react so badly that...
  19. Some of us react to different soaps and dishwashing liquids. Some have gluten or oats in them, some I have yet to figure out why we have a problem I just know that we do. No one in our family can use Palmolive dishwashing liquids. We also have to use All Free and Clear clothes detergent. Some of the "simple" soaps are okay but the ones with all the extra...

    ARCHIVED Nausea

Oh, dear Mel. I do understand. Here is what I do when I have your trouble. For at least 24 hours, stay on a clear liquid diet. You may have to make it longer according to how badly your gut is irritated. You will know if you move up too quickly. Gradually add in a little rice that you have fixed yourself and know for certain is gluten-free. You might...
  21. My endocrinologist had the best advice...tell the gastro doctor to go jump. If your blood work was clear cut and you get better going gluten-free only to have symptoms when you eat gluten, the only reason the endocrinologist could think of to put me through it again was stubborness or money. He kept shaking his head and muttering something about that hippocratic...
  22. Yes. Yes. Yes. I get the tingling, sense of swelling, and breaking out in the mouth before any of the other symptoms arrive. It is my first clue to get back home where I can deal with the gastro stuff. The sores in my mouth range from the white canker sores across the gamut through red painful places to actual splits or rivers in my tongue. I'm not sure...
  23. If you have young people or a lazy adult in your household, you may have to wash your stuff yourself and keep a tight reign on process. I found that the other family members did not think about it when they did stuff like eat chips and drop crumbs where we often need to sit. They also tended to grab the nearest chip clip instead of using the correct one....
  24. You may want to verify that they are cutting, packing the grilled items separately from the breaded items. Chic-fil-a's internal procedures seem to be pretty tight but you might run into a problem at a particular location. I am also sensitive to soy and miss my Chic-fil-a-s.
  25. That's a pretty good description according to what my dermatologist said. She also said that it is different than the usual biopsy in that it is time sensitive so they have to plan ahead a little more when they schedule it so that the lab gets it picked up more rapidly. Might want to keep that in mind when you make the appt and ask if that holds true at your...
