  1. Even with Kroger and its wonderful nutrition section nearby, I still find myself needing to order on-line in order to get enough at a reasonable price to feed our larger family (we keep a gluten-free household due to a mix of extreme sensitivity and a younger child who sneeks inappropriate foods if they are around). I also try to use only reputable vendors...
  2. Anybody else noticed that GIs can be almost snobbish about this if your biopsy comes back negative but everything else is positive? I had a couple of my docs just roll their eyes when the GI did not want to accept anything other than a positive biopsy as evidence. My first GI did not even test me when he saw the blood work and the positive dietary response...

    ARCHIVED Cd & Exercise

If you have not been active in a while or tend to get out of breath, you might want to try stretching exercises such as Pilates. We also have a therapy tub (a hot tub if you don't have a doctor's note for it). We had fibromyalgia so badly that initially exercising was very difficult. The hot tub really helped and now we have begun the initial Pilates program...
  4. I had them, but not as badly as my daughter. It was like dealing with a drug addict or an alchoholic with her. The endocrinologist said it is a normal reaction and that the body really has sort of become addicted to the sensation and reaction to gluten and has to adjust. The amount of time may vary. Stick with it. Let me assure you, the long term benefits...
  5. Upon using the back button to get back to my original search, I realized that I never answered the question. Normal is when it occurs without cramps, water spouts, or feeling as though you have delivered a baby. Normal is sensing the need to go and getting to the bathroom without running. Normal is being relatively certain that when you get up and wash your...
  6. Believe me, you will know normal when it finally happens! I had alternated between D and Constipation all my life. I was ancient (okay, only 45) when I was diagnosed and it took several months for things to straighten out. Even once I began to have what I now know as normal BMs, it was much longer before they were that way consistently. For a while I was...
  7. I was in my mid forties and fully disabled before they found the celiac disease...after my daughter got so sick they diagnosed it in her. Knowing how much of a role nutrition played in our immune systems, I was milling my own wheat and baking my own breads. I was such a great wife and Mom! The one good thing that did come of all of that is that we finally...
  8. I avoided mixed even before going gluten-free. Most are simple to create on your own. For tacos, we do the following: Brown a lb of ground beef (or more in a family the size of ours), adding onion and garlic when almost brown so that the flavors can mix as the onion becomes translucent. Drain grease. Add salt, pepper, 1TBL chili powder, 2TBL cumin, and...
  9. At least the prep is the worst part. Other than a lot of gas and a little sore throat, the upper is a no brainer. The prep for the lower is the worst of them all and at least you know what goes into your after it is finished...you certainly start out clean!
  10. For any who look at this post and panic because they have to work and therefore must bottle feed...just make sure that you and your caregiver know to hold a baby while it is being fed in as close to a nursing position as possible and feed half the bottle while holding the baby in one arm and half the bottle in the other arm. (This impacts how the two halves...
  11. I am not surprised that you have not heard about the links between reading and math skills and the normal way a child was designed to grow. Only someone who had attended a course on preschool education or a mathematics teacher like myself would usually be overly concerned about such physiological impacts. You would not believe how many older students we work...
  12. Differences in color even within the same stool can be normal. As long as they are what we usually consider "earthy" colors and not VERY light, you probably just sat and ate more of one item and then some of another. Some things pass through in less time and others take more time or are more bulky and tend to congegrate together. If in doubt, talk to the...
  13. IF YOUR STOOLS ARE VERY LIGHT IN COLOR, TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR! This can be a sign of improper liver function or it can just be a normal fluctuation. Mine did this when my liver enzymes began to climb too high. My doctor chewed me out for not contacting her sooner. She did a multitude of tests and adjusted some medications and diet issues to correct it,...
  14. The folic acid suggestion is a great one. You may also want to be on a good multi-vitamin. Make sure your thyroid meds are at the correct level and that you are completely gluten-free. In order to avoid the worst of the morning sickness, find a good source of B complex and get started on it as soon as you know for sure if not sooner. Work with your doctor...
  15. One other thought...if your grocery sells the others, could you ask them to special order the corn ones for you? My local Kroger is great about such requests as long as they already purchase from that vendor. They even do it from Bob's Red Mill.
  16. Wish I could help. Every single one sold in the Atlanta area that I know of is at risk of cross contamination. I finally bought a press and make my own using masa flour. It is not hard, but does take a little experimentation, and they can be refrigerated just like those from the grocery.
  17. The only thing I had been told (on the QT of course) is to be more careful about asking about a separate vat if it is late at night or close to closing time. Apparently there are some unscrupulous managers who will begin to fry everything in one vat so that they can clean up more quickly after closing. Woe be unto one who does that and McD's catches them...
  18. If you are looking for larger sizes of gluten-free spices, we buy Tone's from Sam's club. The quality is good and they last long enough to make a difference. I keep the red pepper stuff like chili powder, paprika, and cayenne in the fridge. The rest just stores in the cabinet.
  19. I have seen where some others have reacted to Frito Lay stuff. We do not generally unless I am already in questionable mode, then I react to anything with much grease in it. Another thing you might want to try sending with your son is a large bag of popcorn. We prefer ours with nutritional yeast, garlic powder, and a little salt on it. One of my kids...
  20. Unless it is something like a Honeysuckle turkey, don't buy meats at Walmart. They all have additives, even the beef. Try Winn Dixie, Saverite, or Kroger. Kroger's dieticians are great. I keep them on speed dial. They will be able to look up the name of the item and check to see if the ingredients are safe. Often they will even give me options. If you call...
  21. Yes the bloating is common and yes it does tend to settle down after being gluten-free for a while. It is the first symptom I notice when my daughter has been somewhere other than home and snuck something she wasn't supposed to. I get it as well, just not as badly as she.
  22. My corporate disability finally refused to pay me because they had decided that it was all in my head. I had to go through my church and find a psycologist who could help. It only took a handful of visits to help me figure out how I could more effectively cope with this life changing situation. With all of the malabsorption issues, the constant symptoms,...
  23. I noticed something else this morning when I was making cinnamon rolls. Almond flour has quite a bit of protein. It also adds texture and flavor, especially to sweet baked goods. I use it in the rolls and most of my cookie recipes. I haven't tried it in breads, but it might work there as well since it is not a strong flavor. It also works well as a coating...
  24. I use peanut oil and a deep fryer for mine. I have found that the deep fryer at the correct temp keeps foods from having that greasy feel and taste. It has been well worth the investment. It makes cleanup easier as well. I do not usually use egg in my recipe. Since we kasher our meats, I rinse the salt off and then use the wet chicken. I dredge well and...
  25. Rice flours with a little bean in for texture make great chicken tenders. I season the flour with salt, freshly ground pepper, and a little garlic, onion, and paprika. The whole family scarfs them up since I keep a gluten-free household.
