  1. I am not truly allergic to any of the glues on the bandages, but my skin reacts to most of them. Try using one of the paper tape ones. They seem to cause less problems. We also sometimes use gauze and paper tape instead.
  2. My daughter bought some of that new shampoo for brunettes. She did fine with it for a while and looked so great that I tried it. I broke out around my scalp and face after the first time. Not long after that she began to break out. I did not see anything on the label, but sure enough, after a phone call the company verified that it could contain gluten. I...
  3. My poor copy is getting worn around the edges at this point. I went out and bought those little sticky tabs and placed them on critical pages with labels so that I could get to my favorites easily. I love the rye bread and the pretzels best of all. The French Bread mix makes great bread sticks and a pretty good pizza crust if you blind bake it. The bagels...
  4. An afterthought...I figured I would answer the question before someone asked it. Why chlorinated baths? It keeps the secondary infection risk down around the sores. That helps limit some of the nastiest of the long term problems the sores can cause (Sweet's Syndrome, etc.)
  5. For those of you with DH, you may want to consider using chlorine as your sanitizer in both the pool and spa. Our dermatologist has us taking baths with Clorox in them until we changed from using bromine to using chlorine in the hot tub. I checked into the Baquacil, but did not even think about the gluten issue. It was just too expensive for us to continue...
  6. It is a common misconception, even among docs, that the gluten has to come into contact with the digestive tract. Not so, especially if you are extremely sensitive or have dh. Some people are more sensitive than others. All we have to do is be in the room with the wheat dust and have it come into contact with mucous membranes to get a reaction. We don't have...
  7. I saw info on cosmetics on the news tonight. The group posting the info seems a little on the extreme side, but the info looks accurate. Hope they can get those guys to clearly label everything...at least then we would know if we were getting nasty stuff even if it is something as "natural" as wheat. Check it out and let me know if you find any other info...
  8. ADHD and celiac disease YES, they are connected!!!!! You will probably find that the longer you the family member is gluten-free, the better it gets. You may also want to try some of the following ideas. They have worked in our family. We had one ADHD kid who did not walk down a hallway, he bounced from wall to wall down the hall. He also literally...
  9. I have not had any difficulties with using a second rise in my bread machine. It works fine. In a couple of my recipes, I have to add an extra half tsp of yeast. I buy it in bulk, so that is not a problem for me. I have also found that buttermilk instead of water makes a softer bread that rises better. If your dough is too stiff, add a little more...
  10. If you are female, this may come and go at will without obvious cause. Whether or not you are female, it can be the protein issue or even a hidden gluten issue. I go through this every time I accidentally get glutened. Even a small amount is like alcohol or drugs to and addict. It starts that same craving cycle again for a while.
  11. There is a strong correlation between celiac disease and fms. It is so strong that some physicians are now stating in published articles that anyone diagnosed with fms should also be tested for celiac disease. There is a difference between a true wheat allergy and the autoimmune dysfunction of celiac disease. Some have both, some do not. My celiac disease...
  12. Any "real foods", i.e. freshly milled foods, need to be stored for very short periods of time or refrigerated. Most of the storebought potato, rice, and bean flours will last months on the shelf. I would be more careful about whole grain flours of any kind on the shelf for extended periods. Make sure all of them are sealed tightly to keep out light, air,...
  13. REMEMBER YOUR LETTER IF YOU TRAVEL OUT OF THE US! Some countries will not allow you to bring in food items unless you also have a letter of medical necessity from your doctor. Be sure to pack them in a separate box that is clearly labelled as medical supplies with a copy of the letter inside. Not sure, but I think this info came from one of Bette Hagmann...
  14. Once again we owe you our thanks, celiac3270.
  15. You may also want to time your exercise and vitamin regimen. Try doing them earlier in the day and only stretching prior to going to bed. The calcium is a good idea. I use it and make sure it has a good dose of magnesium in it. I also sometimes have to soak in a tub of hot water to relax my muscles, but I also have fibromyalgia. I am not sure there is...
  16. I always avoid using the pepper out unless they have a grinder available, but I had not thought to check the salt shaker. I do take butter with me to certain restaurants if they use margarines instead of butter because I react to soy and I have yet to find a margarine without soy in it. Thus far I have not run into any problems once I show them my restaurant...
  17. I was going to add my own recipe, but Catfish yours sounds so good I think I'll try it instead!
  18. Well, let's see. I am 46 now. I was diagnosed at 44. I had been extremely ill since 1995 but looking back had symptoms off and on since childhood. Calculating the years...oh well, those numbers are too big to do in my head today.
  19. Anybody remember the show "Doc" on PAX? They did a show of a teenager who was diagnosed with an eating disorder even though she kept trying to tell everybody (including Dr. Cassidy) that she was not trying to make herself throw up. She finally retreated in tears in the hospital bed. Doc Cassidy decided to listen to her and "check out just one more thing...
  20. YES!!!!! You will probably find that the longer you are gluten-free, the better it gets. You may also want to try some of the following ideas. They have worked in our family. Keep a pot of coffee handy. The caffeine helps to get the sluggish part of the brain going properly. Eat high quality proteins regularly. You may want to find a good protein...
  21. The other thing I have not seen mentioned is to simply approach the couple and share the situation with them. Most people are willing to accomodate if given an opportunity and some good suggestions (would you consider having some cheeses and fruit at your reception? kinds of comments). My son is getting married in June and his bride is working with me to...
  22. I tried at least one of the recipes...only problem was that I had left my vanilla at my Mom's (well, my kids did anyway). Needless to say I will have to try again next week after Mom brings back the vanilla.
  23. Manischewitz has a number of items that are gluten-free. Many are carried in local grocery stores. I'm with you, celiac3270. I am not Jewish, but am a Christian who is careful about my diet and often find that the Biblically kosher plan makes a great deal of sense. We also have a few friends who are Jewish and I try to make sure they are comfortable in...
  24. Yes, I see a good rheumatologist. Not all of them are familiar with the fibromyalgia and other arthritic side symptoms associated with celiac disease, so try and find one who is. He checks the joints that tend to be swollen and tender every time I go. Unfortunately, he also presses every tender point. He knows I am in real trouble if I draw back before he...
  25. I suspect that because we had secondary infections (in fact, my daughter's had gone into some oddly named thing that took me weeks to research) we had to have deeper biopsies. Hope you can get away with the scrape one, but if not, don't sweat it. The rounded cut is not that bad.
