  1. The skin biopsy is not overly painful. The doctor gives a local anesthetic then uses a tool that cuts a small circular section from the skin. Stitches are used to close it up. They are the worst part...they itch as they heal. You might want to have your younger child look at your face while the doctor does the biopsy so that the fear factor is minimized....
  2. If money is a real issue (it is in our household) and you like breads, try milling your own grains and making your own breads. It is significantly cheaper in the long run. I answered some extensive questions in another post on the milling topic. You should be able to find it by doing a search.
  3. You might also want to check on any meds you are taking to see if the nausea is a side effect. I got into something last August by accident and am still trying to get back up to full dosage on some of my meds. Every time I bump up a level on one of them I go through several days of vomiting. Ah, praise the Lord for phenergan!
  4. We have two in our family whose blood sugar seems to swing widely. Before going gluten-free we kept protein drink powder in the house and car. If we began to feel the shakes and headaches, we would mix up a meal shake. Does anyone know of a good one that is gluten-free?
  5. Remember that it is still winter out there...and RA along with all other arthritic conditions seem to act up worse during winter. My symptoms are not bad enough yet to take a drug specifically for the RA. I do take pain medications, etc. for the myriad of difficulties (including RA and FMS) that I do have. We watch the RA carefully from visit to visit. It...
  6. I just stick with more simple meal items such as meats and veggies. I have so far been minimally successful in creating a gluten-free matzoh bread that can be crushed for use in recipes. I saw a recipe on some site but cannot find it again. I sure hope someone comes up with one soon. Thanks for adding this thread.
  7. I don't much like the packaged flavor of the premixed ones. I always make my own. In the top of a double boiler, mix 1/2 cup sugar 3 egg whites and 1 whole egg 1 1/2 TBL corn or potato starch Once mixed together, add 2 cups of milk. Cook very slowly and stir constantly until it begins to thicken. It will take 20-25 minutes so our family usually...
  8. As long as I keep the celiac disease under control, the RA, Hypoglycemia, FMS, etc. also stay under control. I let my diet get whacked--even a little--and the symptoms show back up for all the other stuff. If nothing else would do it, that would be enough encentive for me to remain fervently gluten-free.
  9. That last recipe sounds as though it could be a little "less bad for you" than the other two because it leaves open the door for flours with more protein and fiber. I'll try it as well. Thanks for the input.

    ARCHIVED Home Planning

We added a large shelf system we bought at Sam's. It holds all the stuff we would normally put in a pantry including canned goods and the large buckets of grains and flours we keep. I put the Corning Ware and iron skillets on the top shelf along with the extra paper towels and such that don't need to be handy every meal every day. On the next shelf I keep...

    ARCHIVED Tremors

The sleepiness could be either. Both will get better with time. Stay gluten-free and keep mom in your thoughts.
  12. Yes and yes. Is your face pain an intense needly prickling under the skin or a true burning feeling? The intense prickling burn under the skin can be a nerve problem or it can be DH attempting to rear its ugly head. I have both and they feel a little different. The nerve problem is similar to what I feel in other locations on my body from the neuro problems...
  13. Only one way to know for sure...get tested. Start by asking your doctor about the celiac panel of blood tests. He/she will probably want to check a few hundred other things as well. If you have enough damage, the blood work will be positive and you can move on with your life. Personally, I would not let them do another biopsy on me if I had known then what...
  14. I started out keeping a separate cabinet for the gluten-free stuff. I found that only using a separate shelf allowed for too much risk of cross contamination. When we realized that our celiac disease kid was sneaking into the kitchen in the middle of the night and eating everything she could get her hands on that she shouldn't, we had to go completely gluten...
  15. I don't have all the info on gluten in bmilk, but I know with absolute certainty that dairy issues pass through. I had to be totally dairy free with my second and third children because of all the problems my first had...and no one even thought to advise me not to eat cheese and drink milk then breastfeed. They made sure that any supplementary formulas a...
  16. Weather's been nasty here, so it may be a few days, but I'll try them both and let you know how they turn out. I think adding a little xanthan gum or guar gum to the GFG recipe might work. We also have high humidity here in Atlanta. I wonder if maybe using a little extra flour would keep them from spreading too badly. It works with one of the chocolate chip...
  17. I want some banana pudding soooo badly and there are some bananas on my counter that are just right. The only thing I am missing is the cookies. I have just not had good success making my own vanilla wafers. Does anyone have a recipe that works well for them? I don't have the money to purchase them boxed and I much prefer to cook from scratch anyway.
  18. It will get easier...the first few months are the hardest. Once you get used to shopping gluten-free, you know which brands you can get and you just pick them up. I always find that I have to call on some little item, but now it is just one or two each time instead of everything every time. My kids are getting used to it as well. I get the usual amount of...

    ARCHIVED Tremors

Deb, I am so sorry to hear about your losses. I will pray for you. The apparent seizures can also be part of the neurological component of celiac. I have them as well. To look at me when they occur, even the paramedics and ER docs think it is a seizure. The neurologist has done all the tests and they are negative for seizures. The longer I am gluten-free...
  20. No one has yet mentioned diflucan. My daughter and I both had real problems with yeast when we were first diagnosed. Mine got better pretty quickly because I do not tend to eat many sweets or simple carbohydrates anyway, but Jenn's did not. She required several rounds of diflucan. She would get better and go right back to the junk (like most eleven year olds...
  21. I had the heart problem during my second pregnancy and had to wear the Holter Monitor. All was okay. Looking back, I truly believe that much of the problem was associated with undiagnosed celiac. Hopefully you will have as good a result as I did.
  22. Wow...you guys have been active here and I did not even realize it. Sorry it took me so long to get back to this link. I will check with the enocrinologist when I go back. He did not give me a specific web site but indicated that he had been talking with some of the researchers at a couple of universities and that is where he heard about the link with...

    ARCHIVED Corn Allergies?

None of us have a true corn allergy, but I get a belly ache every time I eat it. It also tends to send me straight to the bathroom. I love homemade cream style corn and turkey dressing, but that is about all I will risk it for.
  24. Has anyone told you lately how much we appreciate the interesting links and info you provide? I would love to have the time to research some of this stuff the way you do. But, alas, there are children to educate and meals to cook and no stamina for anything else.

    ARCHIVED Seasonings

Many Tone's, Durkee, and Spice Island spices are gluten-free. Herb Ox beef and chicken broths are also. I do almost all of my cooking from scratch and have found that I don't need most of the processed foods if I am able to effectively use spices. Check out a good listing such as the one on this site and go for it.
