ARCHIVED Help - Are These Ichy Bumps Dh?
cdford replied to dperk's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Sounds a lot like my DH outbreaks. The three days is about right as well. It took about a year before I stopped being broken out regularly at different levels. Like you, sometimes it was one or two and sometimes it was all over. Some of us with sensitive DH tend to react even to coming into skin contact with the wheat so be sure you are not doing something... -
I knew I had been slacking off on my B shots because I hate those needles, but I did not realize how badly until I read this post and took a good look at my nails. I guess I get to take a shot tonight. Yuck.

ARCHIVED Emergency Room
cdford replied to lotusgem's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Oh yes, and remember to be sure they clearly mark your chart to verify gluten free meds with the pharmacy. I also carry a letter with me stating that. ***** If you have children, be sure you have with you an authorization and phone numbers for someone to take care of your children or they will be placed with Social Services (DFACS or whatever they call... -
ARCHIVED Emergency Room
cdford replied to lotusgem's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The times it has happened to me they gave me IV phenergan and demerol until the gastro symptoms and pain were under control. It usually only takes a couple of hits and then they send me home with darvocet and phenergan tablets to get through the next few days. Once last year it took four days in the hospital to get it under control to where I could hold down... -
ARCHIVED Tantrums?
cdford replied to debbie-doodles's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Having dealt with celiac disease/DH as both an adult and the mother of a child with it, I can honestly say this: it is not hard to imagine a young child who feels as flustered and out of control as I do when I don't feel well who doesn't try to find a way to express that frustration, positive or not. A good distinction was made earlier. There is a "normal... -
ARCHIVED New Delphi Lists! Product Lists!
cdford replied to celiac3270's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You've done it again, celiac3270. Thanks so much. Zipped is fine by me as well. -
With all the dust flying around his room as we cleaned that kitchen, it is really no wonder I got sick. He works at Papa John's and comes in and drops his uniform in the floor until he can wash it (at least he does wash his own). I suspect we just stirred it all up and I breathed it all in. Too bad your hubby is not close enough by to help him out!

I wasn't thinking. It was really dumb. My son has lived in our garage apartment for the last year and a half. He is not celiac disease so has not kept his area gluten-free. He was scrambling to finish packing up to move this weekend and asked me for help. I went out there and packed up his stuff like any good mom. Unfortunately, I did not remember to...

I can't remember right now where I finally found some really good info on the neurological damage and the muscle spasms. When my brain works again, I'll try to remember to check and post the info here. Right now I am just having one of those days...well, weeks.

ARCHIVED Gf Deli Roast Beef
cdford posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My son is getting married in early June and I need to find a gluten-free deli roast beef for the trays at the reception. Boars Head is too expensive for our budget. Do you know of any others? -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease
cdford replied to grannyglut's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Those first few weeks are tough. It gets so much better with time. You figure out which brands you can buy safely and you get the hang of checking labels. You do like I do and keep the dieticians for the local grocery chain on your cell phone's speed dial. After a few months of this, it becomes similar to the way you used to buy groceries...i.e. you have... -
I have the swallowing problem but do not have GERD. My family watches me like a hawk when I eat because it can be such a problem. I have the neurological damage and the docs think that is the cause for me. It has gotten much better the longer I am gluten-free, though it still comes and goes some.

If I am in the room when gluten foods are being prepared, I get a reaction. I have DH so the itching did not surprise me. It took me a while to figure out that all it has to do is come into contact with my mucous membranes and I get a gluten reaction. I don't think everyone is quite this sensitive, and I am not as sensitive as I was initially.

ARCHIVED Itchy Skin From Food Allergies?
cdford replied to GFManiac's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yep, could be. It happens to us every time we accidentally get into something. You might want to try keeping a food diary. That will let you know if it could be a reaction to something other than gluten. Also, DH has a specific look on most folks but it can vary even from one part of the body to another. My daughter and I both have it, but it does not... -
ARCHIVED How About...
cdford replied to debbie-doodles's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I bake my own bread, so I can't answer that question. I use Tone's Vanilla Extract (not the artificial kind). I have not found a brown sugar with gluten, but I always check the label of any new brand I purchase. I generally use the store brand from Kroger or the brand Sam's carries. -
Oh, and I forgot to mention that you may also find your sinuses getting yucky as well while your body reacts to the change. Rinse them out twice a day with a solution of 8 oz of warm water with 1 tsp salt and a pinch of baking soda. It will keep them from getting infected without having to take additional meds. The allergist swears by it and after using it...

It happens to a lot of us. It is often part of the detox cycle our bodies go through when we go gluten free. For most of us, this period doesn't last longer than a few weeks. Make sure that you are not letting your sugar get down in the afternoons and that you are completely gluten-free. It should go away shortly. If not, check in with your doctor. The only...

Recurrent yeast infections were a real problem for us prior to going gluten-free. Most people are unaware that if you have candida in the usual place for women, you also have it in the intestinal tract. If you do not treat the entire system, it will continue to recur. Once going gluten-free completely, a 10 day round with the diflucan corrected the problem...

ARCHIVED Gf Make-up
cdford replied to jknnej's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
After readin Kaiti's posts on Bare Essentuals, I got some and tried it. This stuff is great. It takes some practice since the process is a little different than with the drugstore brands, but it has a much softer, less made-up look to it. I just got a few items, but I am definitely going back for more. I am getting way too many compliments to quit now. -
ARCHIVED My Diet Is Not Like Most Of Yours
cdford replied to coin-op's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Life without potatoes, broccoli, or brussel sprouts would just not be life at all. I will just have to suffer if I shouldn't have them! I do limit the potatoes because of the starch, but a 32 oz bag of steamed broccoli is one of this family's favorite tv snacks...especially now that we can douse it in cheese again. -
ARCHIVED Am I Alone In Feeling This Way?
cdford replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Mine was eleven when she was diagnosed and I made the same mistake as you guys. I tried to replicate what she already ate just in gluten-free form. It was outrageously expensive since we had to keep a gluten-free household (she would sneak anything that was here, even if we tried to separate it or hide it). Once I got past the first three or four months and... -
I have a couple of different ones, but my card of choice is the one from csaceliacs.org. I had it laminated so that it would stay nice looking after being passed around kitchens at restaurants and I keep it in my purse. It gives a basic outline of what we react to and how to avoid providing foods with problems. It also lists the kinds of foods we can safely...

ARCHIVED Memory Issues Effecting School Work
cdford replied to cdford's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Ianm: I am printing off your note and giving it to my daughter. She so needs the encouragement. I know she is capable. She knows she is capable, but she is beginning to doubt herself and that is the last thing she needs to do. Thank you so much for taking the time to post your message. -
Being from Georgia (way too close to the Alabama line to admit), we always used corn meal for our okra. I like to add a little corn flour into mine for texture. In the bowl or bag I use to dredge the okra, I put salt, pepper, and a little paprika. Mama would never use paprika of course. She would just salt and pepper the heck out of it, but I like the added...
