  1. Oh, Karen...welcome to my world. With my status, that is not what you want to hear. I have very similar flare-ups and have for years. They seem to be more associated with my FMS and my immune system as a whole than with a gluten attack, though I do get them after getting glutened. Have you considered that it is sinus season and that could cause an immune...
  2. It does sound very much like some of us. I went back and forth between being too thin and too large until my last child was born...then it was too large to even larger. I had all the symptoms you describe plus some. Going gluten-free was the best thing that could have happened to me. It took a while and I went through what is best described as a detox stage...
  3. I am a point in case for your argument. One of my main symptoms was the "fog of fibromyalgia" and other mental concerns. As long as I stay on my ALZ med, I do fine. I let it go and the mild dementia returns enough so that my family starts asking questions. Yes, gluten can trigger what appears to be dementia but really isn't. I use Exelon, by the way. In my...
  4. I don't know about the dental floss. I do talk with my dentist. Our folders are flagged and they double check to ensure that the cleaners and mouthwash they use are gluten-free. He provides us with these little plastic toothpick things to use instead of floss. They come in a little box and we each keep one in our purse and one at home on the counter. So far...

  6. I did not know I was celiac disease. We thought it was just my daughter. I had been keeping the diet with her (only 11 at the time) as an encouragement so she wouldn't feel so out of place. She went off for a long weekend with the grandparents and the rest of us pigged out...homemade wheat bread, pizza, blueberry muffins, cookies, the whole nine yards. I...
  7. Yes, we did have a doctor's letter describing her special needs. This particular school has so many other issues that I think she just fell by the wayside except for those couple of teachers who worked with her. They also expected far more of her even within her limitations. They cut her no slack but made sure she had what she needed to learn the material...
  8. Steph: Thanks for your input. That was what I was hoping for when I put her into the system for a year. I even requested the help. I wrote a letter outlining her specific difficulties and requesting assistance. While I am a strong believer in home education, I also know that at times a child can need professional assistance. I thought I was turning to...
  9. I am so frustrated. I'll take any suggestions you guys can come up with. Jenn has celiac disease, DH, and FMS. The memory issues with the fibromyalgia are a major problem. She has once again completed an entire section of school work getting decent grades on all the daily stuff. She then studies and takes a test...and cries through it because she cannot remember...
  10. I am also one of those rare cases. I carry an epipen and when glutened my neuropathy causes it to appear that I have had a stroke on the left side. I cannot speak or move. I have considered a medical bracelet but have instead chosen to always carry a medical letter with me. Since I cannot go alone anywhere because I do not have a remote for my wheelchair...
  11. You might try mixing in a little white rice flour or sweet rice flour just for texture since they do not tend to be quite as gritty. If you are used to the stronger flavor of whole wheat (we were since we milled our own), you will not be overwhelmed by the brown rice. Baking will be a problem without the other starches to mix in with it. Can you use the bean...
  12. Okay guys, time to cry with me a little. I took my youngest son to McDonald's this week while his older sister went out with some friends. A gentleman came by and asked me about my van's lift for the wheelchair and then promptly asked me if Joseph was my grandson! My hair has been turning gray for years and it goes into a tizzy of grayness and frizzies if...
  13. One good thing about ignorance...it can be fixed. I must admit I am ignorant of what the "crystal" is. Can you explain?
  14. Have any of you found a gluten-free deodorant--not antiperspirant. The only one I have found for girls is Avon's liquid. My daughter would sure like something a little more updated than the one I used as a teenager all those millenia ago (well, it seems that way to her anyhow).
  15. My oldest son had the same problem so badly that he couldn't sleep and would cry for hours and hours and hours. We had a doc at the time who was into as little medicine as possible (great idea). He had us make up catnip tea and give him a couple of ounces morning and evening. It helped to at least give us a little respite from the scrunching and crying....
  16. Other sensitivities seem to be pretty common, especially at first. Hopefully you will be like we were and gradually see some of them go away. My daughter now only has one other than gluten. She origianally had a four page long list. I am down to only a handful.
  17. My IGA was so low that they had to adjust the reading of the other tests. My daughter's was so low that they could not even use her blood work for diagnosis. Yes, it apparently can effect the results of the testing.
  18. Not all the Pantene ones are gluten-free. I checked on the brunette one last week and it was not. Neither are any of the others of those type that I have checked so far. Bummer...I don't want to color my gray, just help it not look so obvious. Anybody else noticed that upon going gluten-free their gray hair began to look less gray?

    ARCHIVED Corn

It is also possible that the corn tortillas, etc. were produced on lines dusted with wheat or on the same lines that flour tortillas were made the day before. I have no trouble with popcorn or corn tortillas, but cooked corn will send me running every time.
  20. There are several good posts on this site about bread machines and different gluten-free mixes to use in them. Once you get the hang of this, it is not a big deal...you just put the ingredients in the machine and turn it on. There is a posting about milling your own grains that contains my personal favorite recipe for mixing up a bulk amount of bread...
  21. Homemade gluten-free bread is not difficult if you have a bread machine. You just put the ingredients in and turn it on. I have not found a decent store bought bread and I think I know the reason...The gluten-free breads do not have a long shelf life because they dry out and become crumbly within a couple of days. It would take longer than that to get them...
  22. I don't know about the one you listed, but there are generic phenergans out there. I keep them handy not only because of the celiac disease, but also because a side effect of one of my meds is nausea. I try to only use half a pill if I can to limit the druggy feeling. If I get into gluten, I have to go on it full force for several days and then back off in...

ARCHIVED Looking For Derm In Dallas

Which Dallas? I know a great one in Dallas, GA.
  24. I could not afford to buy a new one and got really desperate for some decent bread. I used some Dawn PowerDissolve on my bread pan and inserts and washed them vigorously. I then let them soak overnight and washed them again. I have not had any problems.
  25. Time till outbreak varies from person to person. There are several skin disorders that appear similar to DH or can result from undiagnosed DH. I had Sweet's Syndrome long before anyone gave a thought to celiac and DH. My daughter had one of those whose name takes up half a line and I can never remember as well. The location of the outbreak also varies...
