I think you'll find it easier to maintain your gluten-free diet if you plan ahead rather than trying to grab something on the spur of the moment. If you already have something gluten-free on hand to eat, you'll be less likely to cheat. Kroger is getting better and better about stocking gluten-free items. I can't eat the gluten-free rice breads either. IMO, they are disgusting. There are a couple of bread mixes that you can make in a bread machine that are edible (buy them on-line or at a grocery store like Whole Foods). Also, if you buy the Van's gluten-free frozen waffles (our local Kroger sells them), you can make a decent sandwich with them. For most... -
Donna Mae, there is also a blogger on this site called "Amanda'sMommy" or something like that. Her blog is on the second page right now. She has several lists of gluten-free products that may help you out. She's got some make-up lists and I think other things like shampoos and lotions in addition to foods.

Well, Donna Mae, I guess you won't get a straight answer here either. You got two conflicting answers right off the bat. If you are worried about gluten in non-food items, and you can't tell from the ingredients labels, then I would suggest calling the manufacturer directly to find out about any product that you want to use.

I'm a big fan of Starbuck's mocha drinks. My favs are toffee nut mocha frappuccino and when it's cold, I like to drink a cafe mocha from time to time. Hmmm, the last two times I had one, I noticed that I got really bad diarrhea within 12 hours of drinking them. Unless one is ingesting make-up, shampoo, etc., it should not be an issue. Gluten damages the intestines of a person with celiac disease. It cannot damage the intestines unless it gets into the intestines. It will not soak through one's skin into the body. Personally, I do not check the ingredients of things I don't eat and I do not have any reaction...

There is absolutely no reason to go hungry. Like Kaycee said, there are lots of mainstream foods to eat that are gluten-free. It doesn't have to say gluten-free on the label, although many companies are now starting to put that info on their labels without charging for it like it's something special. Just about the only specialty items I buy regularly...

I kept getting sick from eating the chef salad at Jason's Deli. I thought it was the lettuce and something funky was happening to me. Wrong. Great! It is very helpful to have family members that know the drill. It means that family get togethers aren't filled with tempting foods that you can't eat. So many of my family members have it that all of our meals together are gluten-free.

I haven't come across any information linking pituitary tumors with celiac disease. But celiac disease can stunt growth just by itself. You can't grow properly if you aren't getting the proper nutrients. Both of my children were small for their age. My daughter is 23 and I guess about average - 5'3" and probably under 100 lbs. I don't know if there is a link between kidney stones and celiac disease either. I tend to think not. Here is my experience. OUCH! I had a kidney stone attack on Monday. I don't think I've ever felt such pain...maybe childbirth, but this was different. It was a sick pain with no end in sight. It varies from person to person. I don't think anyone can give you a timeline on when symptoms will go away. I'm just guessing, but I think there are immediate symptoms caused by ingesting symptoms (like my MIL gets a rash behind her knees immediately upon ingesting gluten) and then there are the long term symptoms that are caused by the damage... -
I eat Chinese food regularly. I almost always get Kung Pao Chicken and I just order it without soy sauce. They call it white sauce at the Chinese restaurant that we frequent. I also get the steamed rice rather than fried rice...and no noodles, of course. My son gets the sweet and sour chicken. He orders it with the chicken unbattered. No problems.

Personally, I don't worry about soaps, shampoos, etc. If you don't ingest it, you shouldn't have a problem.
