ARCHIVED Went To My First Family Get Together Since Dx
sandsurfgirl replied to Bubba's Mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Our immune system works on high but it attacks our own bodies, so I'm not sure it that's really true. Before diagnosis I was sick all the time and that's pretty much what I hear from other celiacs. I became paranoid about germs because I caught every single cold, had chronic sinus infections, and was just sick every other month. Now I'm far better but still... -
ARCHIVED Deeply Frustrating LGBT Issue

Dating is just plain hard no matter what your circumstance. It takes time and a bit of luck to meet someone you want to spend years with and are compatible with. I can't fathom how anybody can be vegetarian and celiac. It would be so very hard. My advice is to just date casually and not have expectations that are too high. There's that old saying... -
ARCHIVED Oats. Don't Think It's Good News.
sandsurfgirl replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Stats say that about 10% of celiacs can't eat oats, even gluten free ones. Is there anything else it could have been? -

It works very well for keeping things hot. I have different sizes of coolers depending on where we are going and how much food we are bringing. -
Doctors and nurses will tell you all sorts of things but they are sadly WRONG. I wish I had the link to that article. It was something like only 30% accuracy on the biopsy precisely because they don't do it right, and because the test is inherently easy to screw up. Your small intestine is so many feet long and they take 4 tiny teeny weeny samples. Very easy...

ARCHIVED Something Isn't Right
sandsurfgirl replied to scaredblossom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
BRM is gross. They put bean flours in everything. That might be what's bothering you too. I like anything Glutino, Gluten Free Pantry, and Betty Crocker Gluten free. Gluten Free Pantry is my very favorite. Every single thing I've tried from them has been incredible and they use simple ingredients. Mostly rice flours and potato starch. No weird bean flours... -
ARCHIVED More Restaurants Refusing To Accommodate

It depends on the family. There is a family restaurant here that keeps their chicken recipe secret. Even the managers don't know what's in the seasoning package. I asked if they could contact the owner and just find out if it has gluten. We used to eat there all the time and it's up the street from us. The owner just kept blowing me off and not responding... -
I never say disease either. I just say celiac. If your family is supportive then you of course don't have to lie about testing, but I've seen so many situations here where people told the truth to family and were treated like dirt. And there have been awful instances of family members glutening people on purpose, lying that something was gluten free to...

ARCHIVED Tips For Taking Food With You
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
LOL! I have a celiac child so I often have to bring food for both of us. My other child isn't celiac but she needs to eat too, so I end up bringing food along for 3 people. -

I didn't know there are half bricks. I'll check that out. I'm not sure if rocks hold heat the same way bricks do because bricks are so porous. Try a rock or two and let us know if it works. -
I tell everybody if you are undiagnosed or think you are "intolerant" please save your sanity and tell people you have celiac. The last thing you need is to defend your health decision or have people not take you seriously. Tell family and friends you had a blood test.

I posted these on another thread but I think it's good to have a thread for this. Here are my tips. Post yours and spread the wealth of knowlege. I use a cute cooler bag from Rachel Ray that looks like a purse. Not sure what guys can use, but maybe a smallish cooler in a backpack? I have a small thermos for soup or pasta, etc. Small stainless...

I was going to put links to the items I have that are great for taking your food and keeping it hot but I forgot we can't link to that site where you buy things online because it was banned. I use a few different things. I have a small thermos for soup or pasta, etc. Small stainless steel containers. If you search for them on a certain site there... -

LOL!! I'm a bit of a germaphobe and I shudder at the thought of all those people kissing me. Yikes! When the pastor stands at the door after church I wash my hands if I shake his hand. He shook hands with all those people and who knows who is sick, who didn't wash after the bathroom, etc. It grosses me out so bad! I make my DH and kids wash their hands... -
ARCHIVED Modified Food Starch - Avoid?
sandsurfgirl replied to Robin-E's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've seen wheat starch a couple of times but clearly labeled. Tapioca and I are not really friends. I don't get super sick from it but I do get minor issues sometimes. I'm sparing with it and I don't eat it often. -

I would be very careful with that. That's pretty much unheard of. Allergies can be outgrown but this... not so much. Here's a quote from another thread that I read tonight. "If you were gluten free for any length of time, the antibodies could have died down. It is one of the reasons they used to think children outgrew Celiac. At some point they... -
I think that one day they are going to find a missing link for celiac testing. I think there is another antibody or a whole different substance in the body that they haven't discovered yet that will point to celiac. There are too many of us on this board who were deathly ill and debilitated yet we were either only positive on one or two of the tests in...

ARCHIVED Can You Explain This One?
sandsurfgirl replied to Pisqualie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Have you been diagnosed with celiac? Have you ever been on the gluten free diet? It seems from your post that you are not diagnosed and you haven't been gluten free but are searching for answers. I'm going to answer you under that assumption so correct me if I'm wrong. While you are eating gluten, celiac symptoms can wax and wane and they can move around... -
ARCHIVED More Restaurants Refusing To Accommodate
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Today the restaurant that said on their website they can't accommodate food allergies did an awesome job for me. They couldn't give me any meat because all their meats are premarinated in soy sauce. Very weird for a Mexican restaurant. But they made me a nice HUGE platter of veggie fajitas and a side of rice and beans with guacamole. It tasted great. DS got... -
ARCHIVED Negative Test Result
sandsurfgirl replied to scaredblossom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
But you have your diagnosis!! Gluten free has made a big difference for you. If you don't have a problem with gluten then you won't feel any different. My DH eats gluten free at home and eats gluten when he is out and at work. He doesn't notice a difference either way because he has no problems with it. You need actual copies of all tests. I personally... -
ARCHIVED Went To My First Family Get Together Since Dx

You must have a very kissy family! LOL My family would look at me like I was nuts if I kissed them. We hug but that's as far as it goes. Now my children, I kiss them all the time and my 4 year old knows not to gluten me. She washes her face after eating gluten. We are a totally gluten free house, so it's only when we are out that she eats it. -
ARCHIVED More Restaurants Refusing To Accommodate
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's tricky too because of the laws are too stringent or have horrible penalties then companies just won't bother. We aren't a huge share of the market. If all the celiacs in the world quit eating out and quit eating processed foods most restaurants and food companies wouldn't feel the dent, except those who make mostly gluten free. We need to support... -

How are they going to make money on this pretend gluten free pizza when nobody will buy it? It's a very weird business plan for sure. -
ARCHIVED Just Started Gluten Free Diet, Withdrawal Symptoms?
sandsurfgirl replied to Kirstie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Before diagnosis my experience with docs was horrible. My OB thought I had celiac 7 years before my DX, sent me to a GI doc and he talked me out of testing. He was so fatherly and reassuring that there was no way I had celiac. It was just IBS and lactose intolerance and sent me on my way, so happy that I didn't have to do the gluten free diet. I got progressively... -

Another thing I do is ask what they're serving so I can match it. If they're doing croissant sandwiches I make my own gluten free version and bring it so my food looks like what they're having and I can enjoy an eating experience.
