  1. The FDA have not yet decided what "gluten-free" means. So, there are no "FDA Approved" labels at this time. This topic may be of help. The FDA are leaning toward 20 parts per million (ppm), which is 0.002%. 0.0001% is 1 ppm. There is no test in this world that can provide that detection level. The best available (expensive) test can detect 5 ppm...
  2. It sounds to me like, in addition to celiac disease, you have an allergy. Skin contact definitely can trigger an allergic reaction. Wheat allergy and celiac disease are distinct conditions, but they can occur together.
  3. No, in Canada there is no legal requirement to do this, either in printed form at the restaurant or on a web page. Many establishments do, and for this we can be thankful, but it is voluntary. Even in the US, the Food Allergy Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) applies only to packaged food, which must have a label on the package. It does...
  4. This has been discussed from time to time here. The general belief (with some who disagree--Jason, I'll count you in that group) is: If the goal is to improve the experience for all who need to dine gluten-free, then polite constructive criticism when a problem happens will be useful. Threats of lawsuits, tantrums, and other emotional outbursts will...
  5. We Ottawans gotta stick together. We're the only ones who know how to pronounce Woodroffe.
  6. And if you are looking for New Grist, four LCBO stores in Nepean have it: 543 West Hunt Club* (at Merrivale); 1363 Woodroffe Ave at Baseline (right next to the mentioned Beer Store); 3657 Richmond Road* (Bells Corners); 120 Riocan Ave* (don't know where that one is). The three marked with asterisks also carry la Messagere Blonde. None of them...
  7. According to their store locater, la Messagere Red Ale is stocked at Open Original Shared Link Not a lot of stores have it, but you can find them online. I am lucky that I am close to one. The city of Toronto lists only one, downtown on Spadina.
  8. I don't understand either. I thought that prices were fixed rigged the same province-wide. You can check prices online--thats where I got the ones I quoted. Red Ale is listed at the same price at the LCBO and at The Beer Store.
  9. Not really. It is about a mile out of the way. I pass a source of the blonde on my way home most days, so it would be more convenient. But it lacks the body of the Red Ale. FWIW, the Red Ale is $15.55 for a 6-pack. The blonde is currently $14.95, and New Grist is $13.10. In each case, 0.60 is a refundable bottle deposit. Sorry about the "case" pun. ...
  10. When I started this diet in 2000, there was no gluten-free beer at all. Today, there are three gluten-free beers available in Ontario, although I have yet to find a restaurant/bar which stocks any of them. I have heard that Il Fornello is now stocking New Grist, but I haven't been there to confirm it. Two are made by a microbrewery in Quebec and...
  11. We spread it about equally over three 12.5" pans. So, that's three crusts from a box of mix. The package says "makes two" but we like a thinner crust. I bake the empty ones first for 10 minutes at 450oF and when they have cooled store them in the fridge in an extra large ZipLoc bag, separated by waxed paper. The fresh one with toppings is baked for about...
  12. If you have it, the good news is that you are young. The serious complications that many of us have seen are the result of years and years of undiagnosed celiac. When caught early the prognosis is actually very good.
  13. Thanks, Tiffany. Dates aren't something that are part of my diet, so I don't know a lot about them.
  14. Nestle will clearly label in the ingredient list any source of gluten. What gluten ingredient was in the butterscotch chips that we should watch for?
  15. "...as I've heard." Please identify the specific brand of dates and your source of evidence for that. I do not give credibility to things you "have heard," unless I know from whom you heard them. Whether oats are gluten, in the sense used by celiacs, remains under debate.
  16. I hit F5 to refresh, and I am seeing the bullseye with "Rowena" written on it. When you upload a new avatar, the name of the file on the server does not change. Sometimes the browser has a cached copy of the file and uses it. Refresh (F5) causes the cached copy to be discarded, and a new one downloaded.
  17. Gluten can not be hidden in an ingredient list as "spices." In theory, "artificial flavor" could be gluten-grain derived, but I have never encounted a case where it actually is. In the US, wheat would have to be explicitly disclosed.
  18. None that I have ever encountered.
  19. Plenty of opinion presented as fact. There is information allegedly from a single small study done in 1978. But I can't get to the actual study. Have there been other studies which showed different results? The author would cite them as well if the article was intended to be objective. Instead, it seems to advance an anti-corn agenda. I'm unconvinced...
  20. There is one in the middle that looks like a beer. Trusting that it is a gluten-free beer, I'm going for it.
  21. The list of Campbell's products that are gluten-free is quite different in Canada and the US.
  22. I'm late to the party, but Happy B'day, Jess!
  23. I don't know where this celiac myth came from. But it keeps coming back.
  24. Dry sherry is wine with brandy added, both being grape products. I don't see how gluten would be a concern there. Wine has been much discussed here over the years, and nobody has ever been able to identify a wine that, in fact, is not gluten-free.
  25. Yeast extract is not a concern, according to more than one source that I trust. Brewer's yeast is an uncommon ingredient which may contain gluten from barley, but that concern is specific to brewer's yeast. Other forms of yeast are fine.
