  1. Talk of newbies here, and some of the events we have been through together got me to thinking, and I realized that this is kind of an occasion for me. The silly thread started over three years ago, and we are now on page 2,429. 2,102 pages ago, on page 327, John and Amanda were newlyweds just starting their honeymoon. My first post in the thread was...
  2. Leeesah, grate news. Mike, welcome. We seem a little crazy to outsiders, but those of us on the inside know that the real crazies are the ones who don't share their nuttiness here. And, yeah, Guy Fawkes day celebrates the fact that he was caught before he could do the deed. He is burned in effigy every November 5th. Find more info Open Original...

    ARCHIVED Picture

Your picture must be loaded onto a site such as photobucket or flickr, so that it is accessible via the 'net. You then use the address (url) of the file, enclosed in tags. For example, is produced by: [img=http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e339/tortoiseshell2002/Psillies/Martini1-1.webp] Photobucket has a button to easily enable you to extract...
  4. On November 5, 1605, Guy Fawkes was apprehended while preparing to blow up the parliament buildings whilst the King and all the members of parliament were present. We don't do anything around here. I see it as a British thing. I was working outside on taming wild vegetation, but freezing rain caused me to come inside for the moment.
  5. Good morning, pholks. Tis drab and dreary here in T.O. this morning, but the rain has stopped for the moment. The phorecast for this evening: phlurries.
  6. Meat in the United States is regulated by the USDA (as are milk and eggs). ANY grain added to meat must, by USDA regulation, be explicitly declared on the label.
  7. The Lea & Perrins labels are quite different in the two countries. In the US, the label has brown letters on a tan background, and it specifically says gluten-free right on the label. The Canadian version has an orange label with black letters, and lists malt vinegar as the first ingredient.
  8. Most ice creams are gluten-free, other than a few which are obviously not such as Oreo and cookie dough. I have not encountered a vanilla ice cream that wasn't gluten-free.
  9. It is the sweetener that is different.
  10. Brian has not eaten food in a long time, but takes nourishment intravenously. That is what keeps him alive.
  11. There is no doubt that the fries are gluten-free in Canada. The questionable flavor ingredient is only used in the United States, and may not be used in all US locations. At least one US supplier of fries uses a wheat-derived ingredient in the flavor that is added to the oil in which the fries are partially fried before being frozen. Independent testing...
  12. Yes, it is the avatar that you see under the members name in their posts. The system will automatically re-size your image, up to a point. The re-sizing is in pixels. There is a maximum file size which you can not exceed--otherwise it can't be uploaded to be re-sized. You can shrink the image using various tools and methods.
  13. Welcome to the board! Many people carry the genes without ever developing celiac disease. There are numerous examples of identical twins where only one twin has celiac disease. A trigger is necessary to activate the disease. The trigger is something that puts the body, and especially the immune system, under stress. Commonly reported triggers include...
  14. What error message, specifically, are you getting?

  16. What you have downloaded is probably a file in .exe format which is the install program. It would be named ieSpellSetup****.exe where numeric information replaces the asterisks. You must run (execute) this program file to install the spell checker. You can do this by double clicking on the file.
  17. A couple more images: Flames shoot out from a historic house in the Bayview and Lawrence Ave. area of Toronto, on Friday evening, Oct. 30, 2009. Firefighters battle a blaze at a house in midtown Toronto, on Friday evening, Oct. 30, 2009. It messed up traffic in the area pretty badly. The fire broke out just as the afternoon rush...
  18. The house was empty at the time. One firefighter was "sent to hospital with very minor injuries."
  19. The news media have some pics of yesterday's big fire. They are striking, so I thought I would share one of them. The house is in a wooded area at the edge of a valley. Very expensive real estate in this neighbourhood. Ninety firefighters responded and took five hours to put it out. A rainy morning here in Toronto, but it should clear for this evening...
  20. You need a new toaster. Toasters collect crumbs and it is impossible to adequately clean one. Plastic containers and teflon pans that are scratched are suspect. Small amounts of gluten may be stuck in the scratches. If you are worried, replace them for your peace of mind. In my belief, any container whose surface is smooth and that has been thoroughly...
  21. Holy smoke! I've been smelling smoke for about an hour, and just went outside and it is really strong out there. There is a four-alarm fire burning about 1.5 miles east of the store. It started about an hour and a half ago.
  22. Like many tests, this one is not 100% accurate. In a perfect world it would react exclusively to the antibody it is designed to detect, but that is not the case, so a small positive can come from other sources than the gluten antibody.
  23. FlashForward Episode 6 is just starting.
  24. I would suggest that you investigate *all* the information available, and then make a personal decision that is right for you. There is much in this thread alone. Also see: Open Original Shared Link Regarding the fries, while it is true that wheat is used as a starting ingredient in the United States (but NOT in any other country that I am aware of...
