  1. Labels must not be misleading. To label something as simply "gluten-free" that must be a differentiating factor from other similar foods. Since all potatoes are gluten-free, you can not label and sell "gluten-free potatoes." You can, however, say that potatoes are naturally gluten-free (i.e. all potatoes are). You can also say something like, "These potatoes...
  2. Yeah, Jess, the more clothes you buy, the more you eventually have to wash. This evening is the fifth anniversary of my first post on the board. I lurked for several months before signing up so I could respond to a survey by a high school student who was also a moderator at the time. Molly isn't here often, but I see her on da book frequently. Had...
  3. The Canadian Celiac Association considers all forms of tocopherol to be gluten-free.
  4. Tocopherols are not a concern, according to the Canadian Celiac Association. I certainly don't give them any thought. Which book are you referring to? The recent one by Elizabeth Hasselbeck has a lot of misinformation in it.
  5. I agree too. Like the vast majority of celiacs, I do not react to skin contact. In my business, I frequently handle products containing wheat. I wash my hands thoroughly after doing so, and have never had a problem. Worry about what you eat, not about what you walk or sit on. If you have an allergy to something, then skin contact might be an issue.
  6. First, your list of foods that "contain malt" should be foods that might possibly contain malt, which might be from barley. When we talk about malt here, we are usually referring to malted barley. Barley malt is commonly used as a sweetener, but it is almost always declared in the ingredient list as malt flavor. Look for malt extract as well. But certainly...
  7. While "natural flavors" can contain gluten, they very rarely actually do. The most likely source would be barley malt, and that is a relatively expensive ingredient, so it is usually explicitly declared as "malt flavor." If there were wheat in it, in the US it would be required by law to be disclosed as just that, "wheat." Open Original Shared Link...
  8. The alcohol is distilled. Some individuals who have celiac disease also react to distilled alcohol from grain sources, but it is generally accepted that distillation removes gluten.
  9. I don't know of any reason why it would not be gluten-free.
  10. Mushroom is in New Zealand. She'll beat you there by a good margin. <it is tomorrow afternoon there already> We have one more day of business, but today set a record. Our two busiest days in sales volume are the last Saturday before Christmas, and the 23rd of December. In 2000, they fell on the same day and we set a record dollar volume. Today...
  11. The ability to post images is indeed new since Janet started this topic.
  12. It is possible to have him, you just have to know the secret! [img=https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/style_images/decorus/folder_post_icons/icon8.gif]
  13. What a psilly question! It is never too early....
  14. Sounds like your normal life to me, Jess.
  15. Although not everyone experiences it, watery diarrhea is a common symptom. So is explosive diarrhea. I had both.
  16. Yes, it can be changed. Only the board administrator can do this. Send an email to scott [at] celiac.com.
  17. As the definition of gluten-free is debated, many companies are deciding for legal reasons to remove the gluten-free claim from their labels. This does not imply any change in the ingredients or manufacturing processes. It just means that they want to avoid any potential liability in the event that gluten is found in their product as a result of a problem...
  18. Having Olympic headaches about traffic. Canada is the host country, and the torch is making its way around the country. My morning commute should be fine, as we travel at about 8:15 over the route--about three hours before the torch arrives. But if we leave at our usual time and follow our usual route home we will run head-on into the procession. We have...
  19. Indeed, where have all the sillies gone?
  20. False negatives are common. False positives are not. Do you want to have it? Well, no. But I was very pleased that a positive biopsy result gave me the answer that had been eluding me for years. I knew what was wrong, and I knew how to heal myself. That was good news to me. Celiac disease is a challenge to deal with, but in over nine years of knowing,...
  21. My understanding of the rules is that it is considered misleading, and thus not permitted, to label something that is inherently gluten-free as "gluten-free". But the wording and positioning play a role. You can say things like "Tea is gluten-free," or "Our tea, like all tea, is gluten-free," or "Tea is naturally gluten-free." But simply labeling it as "Gluten...
  22. I don't worry about it. I keep hearing tales about gluten in adhesive, but have never seen any credible evidence that it is true. I do rinse the produce, not so much for gluten, but who knows what other customers of the store have on their fingers.
