  1. Gus, what klind of toothbrush is Emily using on you? There are a lot out there, but there is one called "Triple Pet" that is awesome. It has three sets of bristles at different angles to brush the top and both sides of the teeth all at once.
  2. Parlez vous francais? Au Quebec, nous parlons francais. Language may be a problem for you. Since this is a tourist area, the servers will be bilingual, but the people working in the kitchen may not speak English. Something could be lost in translation. If you can get information cards in French (francais) that you can give the waiter to share with the...
  3. There are a number of automatic substitutions that take place when you post or send a PM. Scott (admin) controls these. They are of two general types: Substituting the full word(s) for some abbreviations, in order to make searching for relevant posts easier. These include: For the letter C followed immediately by D, substitute "celiac disease"; For...
  4. Glutino is a Canadian company based near Montreal. They own the Gluten Free Pantry, which is based in Connecticut. Open Original Shared Link They can be reached in Canada at 1-800-363-3438 and in the USA at 1-800-291-8386. The president and owner of Glutino is Steven J. Singer. His email address is ssinger@glutino.com I have met Steven, and he is...
  5. Doh, I first heard this from a friend from the Boston area (works in Cambridge, but lives somewhere on Cape Cod). "Went South" works too. FWIW, the failed FRU is the AMD. That's computer techie speak for the cooling fan has failed and needs to be replaced. Without the fan, these machines overheat and shut down within five minutes! You can't...
  6. Who, me? I'm here at the moment, but am not as active as usual due to a technical problem with my usual computer. The notebook with wireless that I take anywhere in the house with me is currently in the shop for repairs. It went west late on New Year's Eve. In the meantime, I'm using the desktop in the office. Frequently the cats block access here, but...
  7. Amanda, go to your bank and talk to them about a term loan. Unlike the credit card, you would have to make a fixed monthly installment against the balance. But you should be able to obtain an interest rate much lower than what you are paying on the credit card. The rate will depend on a number of things, but will almost certainly be less than 24%. An unsecured...
  8. I agree completely.
  9. Just a quick visit to say HAPPY NEW YEAR, SILLIES. I know some stuff about cats, but feline behavioUr is a special subject in itself. They understand it, but tell us humans very little. We don't know how our tortoiseshell knows when we are finished dinner, but she does. She knows that it is time to ask for treats. We can finish our salads and get up...
  10. In general, I wouldn't. Most people shampoos are much to harsh for the skin of a dog (or cat). They remove too much oil, leaving the coat and skin overly dry. Baby shampoos are milder, and may be suitable, if diluted as Angie suggests.
  11. Lactose (milk sugar) intolerance is often temporary, as lactase, the enzyme needed to digest lactose, is produced in the tips of the villi. When the villi are sufficiently healed to produce enough lactose, the problem goes away. Casein (milk protein) intolerance, on the other hand is almost always permanent.

I think what you are referring to is an emancipated minor. Open Original Shared Link
  13. At Outback, the butter they use on the vegetables is a seasoned butter which contains gluten. The butter they use on baked potatoes and that they serve with bread is pure butter and is safe.
  14. Gee, thanks, Laura. Now I am the Oracle of Sillyville. So many questions to think about... Oh, for Pete's sake! This one I will try to answer. I am not that Pete. The guy in the above is, as I understand it, a euphemistic reference to God. It refers to the apostle Simon, who took the name Peter at Jesus' request ("thou art Peter and upon...
  15. Michelle, good to see you back on the forum.
  16. OMG! So many questions. I think I can only handle about one at a time. So, here is gravy answer promised, as best as I can express it. I asked Jacquie and she gave me some written notes. Here goes: Turkey gravy, using the stock from the giblets. The giblets simmered for hours in water to produce the aforementioned "stock." 2 tbsp corn starch 1 tbsp...
  17. Ragu is a Unilever brand. Unilever has a policy of clearly disclosing gluten sources in the ingredient list. Look for the words wheat, barley, rye or oats. If none of those words appear on a Unilever product, then the product contains no gluten.
  18. Susie, I believe icing sugar and confectioners sugar are the same thing. It is labelled as "icing sugar" and the ingredients are sugar and corn starch. It is a very fine powder. It is one of those things that can sometimes be a hidden gluten source, but there are only a couple of producers in Canada, and they are all gluten-free. I'll edit the original post...
  19. I posted the recipe we use for gluten-free shortbread in the recipes section. I'd post it here too, but some moderator would whack me for spamming the board with duplicate posts! Open Original Shared Link
  20. I mentioned having gluten-free shortbread at Christmas dinner in another thread, and was asked to share the recipe. Rather than have it be on page 475 of that thread, I thought I would put it here where it is easy to find. Gluten-Free Shortbread
  21. Worcestershire sauce has been discussed here a few times. The Lea & Perrins sold in Canada is made here by E. D. Smith under license, and contains malt vinegar. The one sold in the US is gluten free, but not the one available in Canada. It has been reported that 'Wizard' brand, made by Edward and Sons is available in some stores in Canada, but I have...
  22. Hydrogenated soybean oil does not contain gluten.
  23. Yesterday was a total day of rest. The store was closed for Boxing Day. Today we went in together to take down the Christmas merchandise displays and decorations that we have been looking at since Halloween. We made a short day of it, leaving about 1:30. Home by two. Christmas was good. We had my entire family over for a gluten-free dinner After...
