ARCHIVED Con-agra Confusion....email From Them Is Confusing.
psawyer replied to wolfie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Okay, I'm adding ConAgra to my list. -
ARCHIVED Con-agra Confusion....email From Them Is Confusing.
psawyer replied to wolfie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My guess would be that they have changed their policy to include all gluten sources, but some lists (including mine) still reflect the older policy. I can't believe that, having begun to list gluten, they would move backwards. Patti, your check is more recent than my most recent one, so I would take yours as being correct. -
ARCHIVED Con-agra Confusion....email From Them Is Confusing.
psawyer replied to wolfie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If so, that is good news. It was not always so, as I have seen several lists where they were noted as "wheat only" or "major allergens only." -
ARCHIVED I Just Need To Vent...
psawyer replied to andersonfam06's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Both children have serious health conditions which will require constant attention for their entire lives, including support from family and friends. The need for support will diminish (but not go away) as they get older and are better able to look after themselves. Your sister is being a complete j@cka$$. -
ARCHIVED Teen Fights For Right To Pick Cancer Treatment....
psawyer replied to AndreaB's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I don't know what vaccines have to do with the question originally raised. Cancer is not contagious, so the decision of a given person to undergo or not undergo treatment for it affects only their own health. Assuming the person in question is truly making a voluntary, informed choice, and not being coerced by his parents to follow their beliefs, then... -
ARCHIVED Con-agra Confusion....email From Them Is Confusing.
psawyer replied to wolfie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The information that I have always had is that ConAgra will clearly label wheat but not other sources of gluten. In light of FALCPA, this is not terribly useful since now everybody must clearly label wheat. The list of manufacturers I have that will clearly list all gluten sources is: Aunt Nelly's, Balance, Baskin Robbins, Ben & Jerry, Betty Crocker... -
ARCHIVED Spelt
psawyer replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I accidentally ate a spelt pizza crust by mistake once. It was supposed to be a gluten-free quejos crust, but a mixup happened, and I didn't notice the difference, and found out afterwards. Yep, I had a serious gluten reaction that lasted almost a week. One anecdotal story isn't scientific, but I think experts are right: spelt is a form of wheat whose gluten... -
ARCHIVED Maltodextrin In Usa Gluten-free?
psawyer replied to amber-rose's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Maltodextrin is gluten-free in Canada and the US. Unless specifically stated otherwise, it must be derived from corn. -
ARCHIVED Hormel Natural Lunch Meats
psawyer replied to HAPPY DOG SUZ's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hormel will clearly disclose the presence of gluten in the ingredient list. If you don't see it listed (as wheat, rye, barley or oat), then the product does not contain any gluten (even if the words "gluten free" do not appear on the label). -
ARCHIVED Untreated Celiac And Mini-strokes
psawyer replied to elye's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
No difference? Really, this is not a black-and-white situation. Given all the possible complications of diabetes, and the varying severity of them, good control always helps. Even if "zero complications" is not achieved, you can greatly reduce the number and severity of complications through good control. Keep doing what you are doing! You would not have... -
ARCHIVED Disodium Edta
psawyer replied to kalanfan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) is a preservative. It is the sodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. It is a big word. It does NOT contain gluten. "Disodium" by itself is not a complete description of anything; it must be combined with something else to form a compound, whose chemical formula would be Na2-something. -
ARCHIVED What's With Kraft?!?
psawyer replied to JSmith's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
In Canada (don't know about the US) the ingredient list on the Kraft salad dressings is on the band around the neck of the bottle and the cap. It will be at least partially damaged when you break the seal. If you cut carefully, you might be able to read the list afterwards, but if you peel it off to get to the cap, well, its gone. -
ARCHIVED What's With Kraft?!?
psawyer replied to JSmith's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, if it is in my fridge, it is gluten-free. That won't work for everybody, I know, but here if it makes it into the house it has already passed the label test. -
ARCHIVED Please Help Me Find Gluten In This Products
psawyer replied to Carriefaith's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm not Jewish, but have some knowledge in this area. Kosher food can be meat, dairy or neither. Pareve means that the food is neither meat nor dairy, that is, it is neutral. In strict kosher observance, meat and dairy must be completely separated, with different dishes and cutlery, each in their own kitchen. Less strict observances are common. Items which... -
ARCHIVED What's With Kraft?!?
psawyer replied to JSmith's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Kraft has the same policy in Canada as it does in the US. Read the label; there will be a clear disclosure of any gluten in the ingredient list. This is much better than any list can ever be, since you don't have to worry if the list is out of date, or more up to date than the package you have. -
The Canadian Government site relates what is legally permitted to happen (i.e., "possible"). The findings of the Canadian Celiac Association are based on investigation into what actually is present in food. Just because the law permits something does not mean it happens. According to the research by the CCA's experts, all pepper sold in Canada, whether at...

According to the Canadian Celiac Association, black and white pepper are gluten free. This refers to pepper purchased as such, or present as an ingredient in another food. The supposed risk comes from the claim that some restaurants add flour to the pepper in the shakers on the table to prevent sticking. I have heard that story, but don't know if there...

ARCHIVED Taco Seasoning
psawyer replied to Corkdarrr's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
To answer your direct question, the Old El Paso taco seasoning mixes are gluten-free. Old El Paso is a "trusted" brand who will clearly disclose gluten sources, using one of the words wheat, rye, barley or oat. Maltodextrin is gluten-free, as is monosodium glutamate (MSG). Each of these ingredients has a following of people who believe that they are bad... -

ARCHIVED Buns....hamburger & Hot Dog
psawyer replied to wolfie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Glutino makes geat buns. Their bread and bagels are also very good. They are baked in a gluten-free facility near Montreal, and they will ship web orders to Canada and the US. You might need to use IE to get the ordering fucntion on their site to work. I have had trouble in the past with FireFox so I use IE for their site. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Ridges In Fingernails
psawyer replied to lindalee's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had ridges on my nails for years, but they are gone now that I have been gluten-free for six years. I couldn't tell you exactly how long it took for them to go away, though. -
ARCHIVED Bath And Body Works
psawyer replied to Moongirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My thought on lists versus truth in labelling is this. Formulas change, and lists can get out of date. Or, the list can reflect a recent change, but the product in your hand is the previous version. I like it when a manufacturer commits to truthful labelling which will clearly disclose all gluten sources. No lists, no phone calls, all you have to do is read... -
ARCHIVED Soymilk Products
psawyer replied to Shelley Gunn's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, Shelley, and welcome to the site. Natural flavor can hide gluten, but more often than not it is okay. You should contact the manufacturer to find out (see below, though). There are a number of companies that will not hide gluten, but will clearly disclose it with the words wheat, rye, barley and/or oats. You don't need to call them--if you don't... -
Casein can appear in products as sodium caseinate. Examples include some coffee creamers such as Coffee Mate. I believe under the new US labelling law the work "milk" must now also appear on products in the US.
