I feel your pain!!! Sometimes when we're out for dinner, I'll pick up hubby's yummy bread and just SMELL it. I miss bread... yummy homemade, crusty bread w/ butter. If I could have ONE food back, it'd be bread. Bagels might be a close second... I've not tried any of the gluten-free ones yet, and haven't had a bagel in more than 4 years.
Most of the time ... it just is what it is... but other times, I wanna kick a wall!!!

Been to AC many times. Any of the nicer restaurants in the casinos have been very helpful in guiding me thru the menus. Skip the buffets... there's little to eat and TONS of cross contamination. I'm always on the lookout for Chick-fil-a... yummy french fries w/ ranch dipping sauce!

Been gluten-free for about 4 years... I'll let you know when the weight gain STOPS!! Yikes!!

My heart goes out to you, Sheryl. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy on the death of your brother.
You've been dealt one helluva set of blows. Death is hard and being diagnosed can seem like another death... that's how I felt after I'd been on the diet for a while and felt better physically but had to come to terms w/ the fact that I'd never be able to eat the challah bread I so enjoyed making.
Let those tears come... and come... and come. It's healing. Give yourself some time and some credit for the loving care you gave your brother and for your understanding and embracing a gluten-free lifestyle.
(((hugs)))

Don't know if it has anything to do w/ anything... but the rice pastas are much higher on the glycemic index that regular pasta. That's important for diabetics, but don't know how it affects us. I do know they recommend foods lower on the glycemic index when you're trying to lose weight.

I made my own wedding cake w/ Annalise Robert's carrot cake recipe. Took about 8 recipes total to make a 3-tiered cake. We decorated it w/ fresh flowers and it was beautiful and delicious!

I spent several years working at a magazine for ophthalmologists and read tons about it... and know several people who've had it and are THRILLED w/ it... also saw bad results and people who are very UNHAPPY. My only advice is not to go cheap. You totally get what you pay for.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to you.

I watch it sometimes. I think it's so far from reality that I sometimes find it annoying (the whole only one brilliant person in the whole hospital can figure out what's wrong with these people thing), but it's kind of fun to see the medical situations.
I rarely watch it anymore for just this reason. Plus... there's not a hospital on earth that would let him get away w/ the stuff he does.

A handful of whole almonds and fruit... there's your protein and fat... and fruit!

I was going to say, "eat nothing, or pack yourself a meal." I go to buffets w/ my husband in Atlantic City occasionally and the foods I COULD eat (plain rice, baked potato, plain steak) are in such danger of cross contamination (spoons, etc.) that I simply don't trust anything.

I had such a bad experience at Applebees (not celiac related... just service and food quality) recently that I sent them an email and they sent me a $25 gift certificate. The next time we went to use the cert ... the food was just as bad... babe of a husband will be hardpressed to get me to go back... he'll have to find his beloved hot wings elsewhere!

I've been several times as I work in Doylestown and live about 15 min. from here. Their pizzas are quite pricey, I think, and almost all the ones I've had... the crust was burned around the edges to about 1/2 to 3/4 inches in.
I buy frozen crusts from Mr. Ritz in Phila. and make my own.

Manna from Anna bread mix fan here. It makes the best textured bread I've found yet!

Congratulations!!!
Are you normal?? Maybe not... (ha) but you sure are LUCKY!!
I was sick as a dog w/ all 3 of my daughters!!

I always described my stomach noises (pre-gluten-free) as wolverines trying to make thier way out of my intestines!! It didn't HURT... but it sure was noisy!!
-
Imagine waiting for 4 years to taste your first gluten-free beer and suddenly (a few weeks later) ALL forms of alcohol are shooting right thru me!! I'm giving my intestines a rest HOPING it's a temporary thing...
I can cook and bake w/ alternative flours... but there's no substitute for booze!!

I was thinking of a fondue party too, but decided against it when I realized no one would be able to dip bread or crackers. I thought the potential for CC was just too great. It's really hard to make an entire party gluten-free when you're the only one.

I agree... I've learned so much here and know I can ask anything and get experienced and tolerant answers!!

Hey... I thought Bleu cheese (and the whole bleu family) was NOT gluten-free??? I'll be really happy to learn that it is?????

I'll have to say I wasn't so impressed w/ Wegman's gluten-free section. They didn't have much that I can't find closer to home (our new Wegman's in Warrington, PA is about a 20 min. drive). Plus... I was getting their weekly emails w/ recipes especially for Celiacs. I started writing to them immediately cause the stuff they were suggesting could easily NOT be gluten-free and they weren't cautioning anyone to read ingredients (one being gorgonzola cheese)! I heard nothing back from them.

I hear you too! I'm off to our yearly office Christmas party tonight and there will be NOTHING there I can eat. I'll eat before I go!

Interesting topic, cause one of the side effects I noticed w/ Zoloft was the occasional having to run to the bathroom to have D... not often, but occasionally. My girlfriend, who was also taking it, and I called it the Zoloft sh!ts.
So... after a few years of that really only occasional side effect... all of a sudden, I started having it more often. After 2 months, I FINALLY realized that it wasn't the medicine... and was tested. Viola... Celiac disease!!

Been gluten-free for 4+ years and VERY recently, whenever I have a few drinks (be it wine, vodka and tonic, my newly acquired gluten-free beer) I am out of bed at least once a night with the wolverines trying to fight their way out of my intestines and then again several times in the early a.m.... with ... explosions is the only word I can think of... and a smell that (if it doesn't KILL you) is metallic in nature, if you can imagine that.
Never had a problem before.
Am I alone? Are my cocktail days over???
