  1. I'm going through the exact same thing. I could have written your title.
  2. I find the neuropathy really scary. I have it too. It's actually been the symptom that I've had the longest without realizing it. It seems very mysterious, since it comes and goes. I did go to an acupuncturist last week, and he was able to address the neuropathy. In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) there is a framework for understanding it. It's related...
  3. What you describe is called peripheral neuropathy. It is commonly associated with Celiac/gluten intolerance. You can google "celiac" and "peripheral neuropathy" and read all about this association.
  4. Thanks everyone! I bought a gluten free flour mix from Arrowroot. It has a recipe for bread on the back, so I guess I'll start with that. Funny, my Mom started baking bread from scratch as a healthier alternative to supermarket breads when she was recovering from cancer. It is said that we all turn into our Moms.
  5. The only way to know for sure is to stop eating gluten, and see if your symptoms recede. It sounds like that would be a good idea. Since this has been going on for awhile, you'd need to go on a strict gluten-free diet for at least a month.
  6. Yum! Thank-you for sharing - looks fantastic! Would be nice for supper with a serving of sauteed leafy greens.
  7. skigirlchar: I need new pans for this too?!? I thought that I just needed to replace the cast iron ones?
  8. Thank-you both so much! I have no problem starting out with a mix, and Pamela's sounds like the gold standard. I already tried Pamela's chocolate chip cookies, and I loved them! But they come 9 to a box, and I'm sure you can all imagine the price. Time to bake my own! I made up an apple-cobblery desert thing last week. I just mixed apples, cranberries...
  9. I threw out my wheat flours, but now I need to replace them. I see lots of recipes online for gluten-free baking, but they all seem to use different flours. What should I purchase to start out? Where can I buy these? I appreciate advice from experienced bakers. Thanks so much!
  10. Yep, pretty much. An endoscopy showed that I had gastritis, which means that my stomach was oozing blood. No wonder I was in so much pain. I stopped eating gluten, and the pain went away. People on the forum will tell you that to us gluten is like poison. I understand that more everyday. The good news is that you can avoid it. It takes some work, but...
  11. I really, really, really like to eat too. To the extent that sometimes I think about meals I've eaten when I want to feel happy. I can describe dishes I ate years ago in detail. I know that not everybody is like that, and not everybody understands either. Over a decade ago, I choose to make radical changes in my diet after being diagnosed with fibromyalgia...

    ARCHIVED Should I Even Bother?

Count me in for a vote against looking for a decent doctor. That said, I do think that you'll need to research the nutritional deficiencies that often accompany Celiac, and make sure that you address any in your diet. You might be better off spending your money seeing a nutritionist. (I don't know how much that would cost out-of-pocket.) Even in that case...
  13. My doctor - the best I've ever had - described gluten intolerance and Celiac disease as points along a continuum, i.e., I may not meet the diagnostic criteria for Celiac now, but I definitely would if I kept eating gluten. And, by then, I'd be a mess. I think I'm lucky to have symptoms early on, so I can start my recovery.
  14. I usually get my chai tea from a tea bag or loose already mixed but I will try that too. I drink decaf chai and mint teas pretty much, as my stomach can't handle coffee anymore. Thank you for typing that out! I was at the Indian grocery near me just the other day - restocking such things as sorghum flour and I finally tried carrot halva, which I have...
  15. Allison, You really cheered me up tonight! I had no idea that dosas were made from rice flour. My husband is second generation Indian American (he was born in the U.S., but his parents immigrated from India), and we have lots of relatives in India. I've been lamenting that I'll never be able to eat dosas again! Here's our recipe for Chai Tea. Making...
  16. Good news - looks like there is a Celiac MeetUp based in Berkley: Open Original Shared Link I wish we could go together to a meeting! I moved to NYC from SF, and I miss the Bay Area sometimes. I think that NYC and the Bay Area are probably the easiest places in the U.S. to be gluten free, even though it doesn't feel like it right now. Trader Joe...
  17. I agree that it would make sense for you to talk to a counselor. I've mostly been at home for a few months now, but every week I talk to my therapist on the phone. I was seeing her to deal with something unrelated when my health issues started, but she has been an important source of support for me during this. It helps to express my feelings of sadness,...
  18. Thanks for checking in about my message. It's depressing that I can't even count on herbal tea to be gluten free. I remember now that many teas have barley. It sounds like you all are scrupulous about checking labels, checking brands, writing to manufacturers about products, talking to waitstaff at restaurants. I guess that's what it takes to stay healthy...
  19. I've been working on cutting gluten out of my diet now for 5 weeks. The impact of a gluten-free diet is immediate. My GI symptoms clear up entirely after 5 days. But, I keep accidentally eating food with gluten. I recognize my mistakes as soon as I realize the stomach cramps and pain are back. In retrospect, the mistakes seem so stupid, but I'm still making...
  20. I'm so sorry to hear about your "accident". I'm dealing with the same thing(s). It's rough. Somebody here said that drinking lots of water helps her with accidental glutenings. It makes sense, since water provides a natural "flush". Hope it works for both of us too!
  21. _____________________________________________________________________ I'm new as well, and so struggling through the process of going gluten-free. It's been about 5 weeks for me. It is incredibly frustrating and slow. I've already identified several times when I was "glutened" accidentally - the first time by a barley grain coffee substitute, and the...
  22. I saw a GI doctor after 3 months of wrenching, unable-to-leave-the-house symptoms. He is a highly-credentialed, university affiliated specialist in NYC. Yet he told me that GI symptoms and peripheral neuropathy do not coexist. I searched online and found out they do - in Celiac! (and a number of other diseases). After an endoscopy, he diagnosed me with...
