ARCHIVED If Both Your Kids Have Celiac, Does That Mean A Parent Has It?
GlutenFreeManna replied to chisket's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Celiac disease is genetic if that is what you are asking, so yes. Your daughters got this from somewhere. It could have come from you or it could have come from both sides of the family. It is most common in people of Northern European descent (especially Irish/Scottish/English) although they are finding more and more that any ethnicity can have it. It... -

ARCHIVED If Both Your Kids Have Celiac, Does That Mean A Parent Has It?
GlutenFreeManna replied to chisket's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If you have DH then you have celiac. It does not matter what the other tests said. I also don't understand why your doctor would want MORE testing after your daughter got a positive test. The blood tests are very, very very rarely false positive. It just does not happen. People get a lot more false negatives (which means your husband is not completely... -

Oh no, he's had many grills over the years. We had to give up our grill when we moved to this city and the only place we could find to rent didn't allow grills--not even if we ditched the propane tank and stored it and didn't use it. We have really missed having one and having a yard too! Even though the yard is small I plan to cover most of it with a... -

From what I have read Soy is more likely to make you hypo or contribute to hashimoto thyroditis. However in the early stages of hashi's people often bounce between the two extremes of hypo and hyper. You may have started a cycle of changing in between the two. I will warn you that this view is somewhat controversial because the FDA has recommended soy... -
ARCHIVED My First Trip To The Mil's Since Diagnosis
GlutenFreeManna replied to SnoBaby's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am from the north, but I currently live in the south and I have for over 12 years so I understand the concept of "Southern Hospitality". It absolutely drives me bonkers. I would rather someone tell me they have a problem than just smile and pretend everything is ok and then talk about me behind my back after I leave. If your MIL is NOT from the South... -

All good ideas! Thanks everyone. I really think I will do several big salads--green salad (with lots of non-gluten, non-dairy topping options), potato salad, maybe a bean salad. And then do a meat that would be easy like grilled BBQ chicken. I mentioned the grill idea to my hubby and he got really excited. Even when I said, "Are you sure you would want... -

LOL! That's what I'm thinking...I'm going to need a big MEAT dish for the men. Lettuce wraps are also kind of messy to eat and I won't have a table that everyone can sit at so things need to be edible while people standing around or sitting on the floor or packed boxes. I do make an excellent Thai-style spring roll however which could be good... -

Okay, I don't know your MIL or the tone of voice with which these were said but with the exception of the last comment about gaining weight I think these were harmless remarks. The last one was out of line and rude for sure but I do think perhaps you were a little sensitive because you have not had to deal with it before. People on this board have had much... -
ARCHIVED My Dna Results-I'm Confused
GlutenFreeManna replied to Neshema1's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, I don't know about your other diseases but when I was on gluten I had unexplained seizures. Yes, gluten can attack any part of your body not just the intestines. It can attack your brain and nervous system as well but there is currentl no way for them to test for that. Some of my symptoms prior to goign gluten free were muscle pain and weakness, joint... -
ARCHIVED Thyroid Questions
GlutenFreeManna replied to HopefulMama23's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Are your "protein meals" soy based? And do you supplements contain soy? I am borderline hypothyroid (not high enough for the dr to diagnose and give meds but I have seen an upward trend in my repeated test results just like you noticed) and I have found that so far cutting out soy has helped me. Whenever I eat soy I am extremely exhausted/moody. Just... -
ARCHIVED I Think I Might Have Celiac Disease O.o
GlutenFreeManna replied to tranquilskies's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
What you are describing with your throat sounds more like an allergy to me. I had those symptoms as well as the neuro symptoms you described and I ended up having BOTH a wheat allergy and a gluten intolerance (they are two different things). If you have insurance it would be a good idea to get both celiac testing and allergy testing done just to be sure... -

Good ideas! Thanks! Anyone else that wants to contribute, please throw out their ideas of simple things I can make a few days before. I do live in the South and temps are around 100 degrees right now so I'm thinking more cold options and lots of cold drinks would be good. -

If you don't want to get new stuff you can just avoid using the stuff that could be cc risks. For example, use the oven and bake with foil or parchemnt paper down on your old pans (if you have nonstick--stainless steel can be srcubbed if it's not too beat up). If you have a wooden or plastic cutting board with scratches put down a piece of paper towel or... -

If you have a store that carries their other products try askign them if they would be willing to start carrying the chocolate chips too. They probably will. I've been surprised at the number of times I have asked a store to start carrying something and a few weeks or months later the product was there on the shelves. It never hurts to ask anyway. -

Yes, we will be able to get the keys one day before our big move. I had planned on making some small trips with clothes and breakable items I don't want moved in the U-haul. I can totally put stuff in the freezer/fridge if I need to. I just want to do stuff that requires as little prep as possible since moving is so much work/stress already. I need stuff... -

It doesn't need to be soy free but I would really prefer dairy free as much as possible. Actually I'm more concerned about dairy cc than gluten cc at this point because my reaction to dairy is anaphylactic (as well as shellfish and pork but those are easier to avoid). So if I had cheese for sandwhiches I wouldn't be handling the cheese. I think I could... -
ARCHIVED Cookie Crisps Going gluten-free?

What are the ingredients? I would be surprised if they did since "cookies" are usualy made from wheat flour but that would be nice to have another kids cereal option, wouldn't it? BTW, I wanted to mention that Enjoy Life chocolate chips are awesome and they are soy free. -

Okay, so I will probably just end up getting the standard pizza and then cleaning and sanitizing everything so I don't get sick but the thought of having a bunch of people eating pizza in my new place kind of makes me queasy. I would order from a place that has gluten-free and vegan cheese as an option for myself but I can't expect them to eat that (nor... -

ARCHIVED My Dna Results-I'm Confused

I can't help you with interpeting the genetic test results but I'm confused about your statement that you were diagnosed at age 14 months but you don't know how. Are there there not medical records from back then? Did your mom just choose to make you gluten free as a child? Did you go back to eating gluten and then all those health problems started? Or...
