The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
GlutenFreeManna replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I actually have never made it. I have had some at my SIL's house and liked it though. Here's the recipe I was going to try: http://reciperenovator.com/special-diets/vegan/healthy-recipes-gluten-free-cucumber-avocado-soup/ I ended up just making the spring rolls and they were plenty to eat. Do you have an Asian or international food store? That's where... -
ARCHIVED Allergy Testing Done
GlutenFreeManna replied to collgwg's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Make up and lotions are hard to read the ingredients because there are no laws saying allergens have to be labeled for non-food items. They can hide soy or wheat in tocopherols, mixed tococpherols or vitamin E and many other things. You may want to write to the companies of the products you use to find out if they are safe. -
Oh, YOU'RE yeast free. I got it now. I thought you were thinking that vegans don't eat yeast. Sorry. I couldn't do yeast for about 6 months either but now I can have yeast bread every few weeks now and it doesn't bother me. I stay away from yeast extract in broths and other food though. There's just no reason for there to be yeast in "organic" chicken...

ARCHIVED Allergy Testing Done
GlutenFreeManna replied to collgwg's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have you checked your personal care products (lotions, shampoo, make-up, etc) for the things you are allergic to? I got hives from using lotion that had wheat germ oil in it. Soy is also used in a lot lotions and things in the form of vitamin E or Tocopherols. -
The best mac and cheese that I found (before I became allergic to cheese) was making it homemade with Tinkyada pasta. It's certainly not as convienent as a box but the taste is worlds better. That Annies stuff is gross, IMO. For Spaghetti O's you might try a brand called Organ. I have had this: Open Original Shared Link once and it was decent (my...

ARCHIVED Allergy Testing Done
GlutenFreeManna replied to collgwg's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you are allergic to these things you should NOT be eating them! For allergy testing you don't need the things in your system like with the celiac antibody testing. I came up as allergic to wheat a month ago even thoguh I have been gluten-free (and therefore wheat free) for the past 18 months. I really think you need to call him and ask him if by "eat... -
I can relate to just about every post in this thread but this one describes me exactly before being diagnosed when it came to numbers. I would read a number on the page and have to repeat it several times and even look at it while dialing to make sure I got it right. I couldn't just look at the number and dial or if I was looking for an address I couldn...

ARCHIVED Can gluten-free Version Taste Like Mil's Bread?
GlutenFreeManna replied to sreese68's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm sorry for your loss. You may not be able to duplicate it even if you were baking with wheat flour and following her recipe exactly. There are a lot of things my grandmother made that I will never taste again because she did little things that were not written on her well worn recipe cards. It may just be time to start a new tradition. You can still... -

I avoid msg, hydrolyzed soy and yeast but none of those ingredients have gluten in them. Fresh sausage from the butcher is more likey to be contaminated, IMO. -

ARCHIVED Turkey Gravy
GlutenFreeManna replied to Pearlgf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
They are technically different but it won't matter which you use for making gravy. Stock is usually made with just bones. Broth is made with bones and meat and sometimes vegetables. Most people (non-chefs anyway) use the words inerchangably. -

You could also just take some bags of chips--potato chips or tortilla chips and a jar of salsa. That way you don't have to worry about cooking or storing anything at all. Baked beans is another thing that's easy and goes with the whole grilling thing. Put in a slow cooker to warm up when you get there if you will have a place to plug it in. -

Can't go wrong with German Potato salad: Open Original Shared Link It's good warm or room temp and no mayo so you don't need to worry about keeping it cold. -
I just wanted to point out that this thread was started in 2005. It seems like from reading the responses here this place had only unbreaded wings up until recently when they started frying breaded wings as well and using the same sauce containers to coat both unbreaded and breaded. Restaurant often change their menus and prep methods so we need to pay...

GlutenFreeManna replied to kdonov2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Do be too hard on yourself. It's never to late to learn more ways to eat safely! I've been doing this for 18 months now and I still learn new things everyday on this board. Do you care to share what mistakes you made to help other people who are new to eating gluten-free? I'm guessing they are things most people won't think to check when they are just... -
ARCHIVED Turkey Gravy
GlutenFreeManna replied to Pearlgf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I don't know of any store bought ones but you don't need drippings to make gravy. You can make it with just broth and a thickener of some sort--either gluten-free flour or cornstarch. I use the recipe on the side of my cornstarch can (I don't have it handy right now). Here's a really easy one: Open Original Shared Link Also, pretty much any gravy... -
ARCHIVED Soy Allergy- Your Honest Opinions?
GlutenFreeManna replied to Coinkey's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
The "soy beverage" that you drank wouldn't happen to be Soy Dream would it? I ask because Soy Dream and Rice Dream products are labeled as "gluten free" but they actually have barley water in them that makes many of us very sick. -

ARCHIVED My Friend Is Coeliac, What If She Decides To Eat A Piece Of Cake?
GlutenFreeManna replied to kellynolan82's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You may need to take her to the hospital. Everyone's reactions are different but what you describe is not uncommon. My immune system was so much under siege one time after an accidental glutening that I developed brochitus which turned into pnuemonia. Hopefully this was a lesson for her she will not forget. Make sure she getting lots of water and other...
