  1. Just more of a rant than anything, but I'm tired of not feeling well and I've been on the gluten-free diet for 4 months and I'm still just as tired as I always (my major symptom). I just saw my general doctor yesterday and told him that I still wasn't feeling well and he said maybe some of my symptoms were "psychological" and that he couldn't do anything...
  2. thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! I will continue to look.
  3. i've gained about 7 pounds since going gluten-free 4 months ago and although I'm far from overweight, I'm very scared about gaining more and more weight. I'm trying to eat less calories with this new diet because before I could eat whatever I wanted and still was losing weight. I'm trying to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, but they just don't fill me up...
  4. I've gained about 7 pounds (more or less) since going gluten free 4 months ago. I worry that I will continue to gain weight. I try to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, but they just don't fill me up like carbs do. I also have constant cravings for carbs and sweets. I'm not sure if I'm gaining weight because I'm getting glutened, so far I haven't noticed...
  5. I'm not sure if this is the right thread to be posting this in, but I was wondering if I could find employment and job opportunities in the gluten free world. For instance, working in a gluten free bakery, or working for a gluten free food company. I've googled "gluten free jobs" and "gluten free employment" but have got few helpful links and results. I'm...
  6. thanks for all your candid replies. My town is not big enough to support a gluten free bakery (plus there is already a group of them who sell their stuff at the farmer's market). But I am hoping to move to a larger city where there might be more options. I do the occasional catering (which usually involves baking with wheat flour) but like I said, it's very...
  7. so in other words, it would not be a good idea to work at a bakery unless the whole facility is gluten free? Or could I wear a filter mask? I know that's a weird thing to ask, but I'm a very good baker and i'm losing my other job and need some additional work and they are needing more bakers right now in my town. I suppose even if I wore a filter mask, the...
  8. Well, I HAVE been gaining weight (probably 6-7 pounds) since going on this gluten-free diet but i can't tell if it's because I'm now absorbing nutrients or if this new diet is just causing me to gain weight (without necessarly healing my intestines). I'm trying to be careful not to eat too many bad foods, but it's hard because i've always eaten a lot of sweets...
  9. thanks for all of your imput, everyone. Oh gosh, this is gonna be harder than I expected. It's hard enough eliminating all the gluten from my diet, but now dairy as well. I was hoping sheep and goat products didn't count. I've never had any of the severe stomach problems that some celiacs do (I only have acid reflux), and I don't seem to notice much change...
  10. I've been on the gluten-free diet since early May, but have not had much relief (I was diagnosed with Celiac disease). So now I'm trying to eliminate dairy for awhile and see if I start feeling better. I have a few questions: 1. can I still have goat and sheep milk, yogurt, etc, as long as it isn't cow? 2. do I need to avoid products with dairy that...
  11. It's shocking how ignorant GI can be about Celiac and gluten intolerance. I saw one about a month ago who told me that I only had a "mild" case of Celiac Disease and that I was being too parinoid about what I eat. She also said there my symptoms are probably not related to Celiac and will probably never go away (I have fatigue, restless legs, frequent nose...
  12. I, too, had this question. So I called and spoke to someone at the Chicago Celiac Center (I had several other questions as well). That person told me it was really important to use gluten-free make up, shampoo, etc. i can understand the lipstick, but shampoo and soap and such seem a bit more extreme. But I'm assuming that she knew what she was talking about...
  13. Yeah, I've had similar problems with nosebleeds, although they almost always happen in the winter when it's so dry. I try to keep a humidifier going in my room all the time in the winter but it still doesn't always prevent them. Also, I used to put vaseline inside my nose but some docs have said it's a bad idea. Others say it's ok. Yeah, in the winter, I...
  14. Is it me, or do Enjoy Life cookies and bars taste awful? Very hard, weird texture/flavor. Here are some other comments from Glutensolutions.com regarding their caramel apple bars: mcminnville, oregon * Friday, October 01, 2004 got this in my package as a mistake and it was awful - edible but awful New Haven, CT * Monday, November 01...
  15. That sounds really disturbing. Once I took a nap and woke up to find my nose was bleeding. Half of my pillow was covered in blood! Needless to say, I was scared. I almost always wake up if my nose starts bleeding. I'm doing better from my accident. But last night I had a bad headache and cried a bit. It's just hard to deal with all the PTSD.
  16. Interesting, I never knew there was a name for this condition. I've had my nose cauterized with dry ice (ouch!) twice in the past with no success and just a lot of pain. But unless I keep my head up or forward, I do swallow lots of blood. I was swallowing a lot of blood in the hospital because they didn't believe me when I said that it was running down my...
  17. I suffer from Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It started 9 years ago when I was in a horrific Amtrak train accident (1 person was killed in my car and we were trapped in the bottom of the car, lying upside down in a ditch in the middle of the night for over 30 minutes). That was absolutely horrible, but fortunately I was not seriously injured. However...
  18. well, i got an ultrasound of my breasts done yesterday. Fortunately nothing was found. There are still a few benign lumps in my left breast (as was found last time) but they assured me that it was nothing to worry about. They said I need to get checked again (only with the left breast) in 6 months. I just got my period today, although it is pretty early ...
  19. I, too, get very bad cramps. Certain months are worse than others. Sometimes I get dirrehea or an upset stomach if the cramps are really bad. At times I've felt slightly nauseous but nothing serious. I have noticed my cycles gradually changing through the years. I now notice that I bleed more on the first 2 days and a lot less during the following days. Usually...
  20. Well, i've heard that men can get yeast infections, too. But it's much more rare. And it mainly affects men who are not circumcised. But I agree, women have to put up with SO much crap. Like periods!
  21. well I finally found a copy of gluten-free living at my health food store, so I bought a copy. It's ok, but not worth $9. I think I will stick more to "Living Without" for now. It's cheaper, comes more often and has pretty good articles.
  22. usually my period is pretty regular, although I've noticed in the last few years that they tend to be closer together or farther apart more often than I used to. Especially periods close together. So annoying! My last period started on July 3 and I'm already having spotting, cramping, sore breasts and PMS again! I've been on the gluten-free diet for 2 1/...
  23. Well, I think i might be starting my period early this month, which may answer some of the breast pain. However, my last period started July 3, so it's been barely 3 weeks. I've heard that menstrual irregularities can occur for some women with Celiac, though, am I right? I had a horrid experience with gentian violet. I've had a history of chronic vaginal...
  24. Well, yesterday I got a call and was told that I have a urinary tract infection. I said that I didn't notice a lot of pain when passing urine, but they said that wasn't always a symptom. i've also had a hard time emptying completely, which is another symptom of a UTI. Anyhow, I'm on medication now and the peeing has gotten much better under control. I was...
  25. I just got blood tested for diabetes today. I've had several diabetes tests in the past, all have come out negative. Fortunately, I've been peeing much less at night now. But the sore breasts aren't going away. I've also been scheduled to do a follow up sonogram (I had one back in April for the same reason). Some fibroids were found in my left breast but...
