  1. Tell me about chronic yeast infections! I've been struggling with them since I was 13 years old. It's very frustrating and painful, especially when they don't go away after using various creams, suppositories, oral meds, etc. My yeast infections seem to come and go. Usually I have several each year. But in the late 1990s, I literally had one for about 8 months...
  2. I'm in kind of a similar situation as you. I've been diagnosed with celiac 2 1/2 months ago and have been on the gluten-free diet since then. But I haven't felt much better. I heard that the people who do feel better really fast often have the stomach problems. I have acid reflux, but other than that, no stomach problems. I, too, suffer from anxiety and...
  3. I often experience days of breast pain (and not before my period) and wonder if anyone else has this. There is no real pattern to this, it just happens for about a week or so and then goes away. The nipples especially can be very sore. I don't breastfeed (I have no children) and have also gotten mammograms and sonograms but have been told that I have no problem...
  4. I was just in Iceland, Finland and Estonia. Finland is much more advanced in celiac disease research and gluten-free foods than the other 2 countries. Also, the gluten-free products in Finland, overall, were much tastier than those in the US. I noticed some of the products were imported from Sweden, England and Germany. The cookies and rolls were some of...
  5. I have just gotten back from my trip and it was wonderful. Finland is, indeed, amazing for us with celiac disease and gluten intolerance. That country is way ahead of the game and I was extremely pleased how just about all the menus were marked with gluten-free items, as well as the selection of gluten-free items in the grocery stores. Plus, just about everyone...
  6. I'm gonna see the allergist tomorrow, so I will ask him if he thinks there is a need to check for dairy intolerance (as opposed to dairy allergies). It's weird because when the pollen gets bad outside, I feel bad (sinus and nasal pressure, headaches), yet the results said that I don't have any pollen allergies. I wonder if this is just another symptom of...
  7. I'm confused. 2 months ago I was diagnosed with Celiac and started the diet. Not much improvement, so I decided to get blood work to test for other food allergies. Well, it turns out that I don't have any other food allergies, including wheat. I know that gluten intolerance and an allergy to gluten are 2 different things. But I'm still confused. Is it possible...
  8. I am in Iceland right now (Reykjavik to be exact) and am finding some things I can eat, although they also aren't very knowledgable about Celiac. There's a health food store that has some gluten-free items, but I've been rather dissapointed with the larger grocery stores like 1011 and Bonus. I asked if they have a gluten-free section, but they said no. And...
  9. Ok, this one tops them all: Soy Delicious unsweetened coconut milk Dreadful! I tried some on my cereal yesterday. It doesn't taste remotely like coconut, rather like Elmer's glue or some nasty liquid paste. I felt like throwing up! Needless to say, I ditched my cereal and the entire carton of coconut milk. Is this what they serve as a drink in a Russian...
  10. I do believe I could really have candida overgrowth. I've been suffering from chronic yeast infections (the female kind) since I was 13. I also find that the more sweets I eat, the more I crave.
  11. I can't find the link to the article.
  12. That's easier said than done (giving up all sweets). But I'm trying to eat less of them. You are right, though. The more sweets I eat, the more I crave. I have bought boxes of gluten free cookies and such but don't plan on buying any more. The thing is, I am a baker, so I can make much better cookies, cakes, etc myself. I'm just trying not to use too much...
  13. Wow, it sounds like Ener-G products are best to be avoided. The woman at the grocery store also told me that their products are nasty. All the stuff from this company sounds like bad news.
  14. Ok, most of the gluten-free products I've tried have been surprisingly good. But I tried one of these today and had to throw the rest out: Enjoy Life Sunbutter crunch bars They tasted like sweetened compressed dog food! Ugh! Maybe I'll feed the rest of these to the geese and fish in my pond. Also wasn't very impressed with the Enjoy Life chewy choc...
  15. I don't have a dog. I have cats, but I think it would make them sick. Maybe I should feed them to the fish and geese out in my pond.
  16. most of the things that I've tried so far have been very tasty. However, i don't like the Enjoy life snack bars. They taste like sweetened compressed dogfood. Unfortunately I bought a whole box and they are really expensive, so I'd hate to throw them away but...
  17. Since being diagnosed with Celiac disease and starting the gluten-free diet in early May, i have found myself making trip after trip to the grocery store and buying just about every gluten-free product under the sun. Well, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but I am just obsessed at trying all these new foods (esp. baked goods and carbs). I've been spending...
  18. One thing I've noticed since going on the gluten-free diet is that I have constant cravings for baked goods, ice cream, sweets and carbs (pasta, esp). I've been a baker all my life and have always eaten a fair amount of baked goods (but not out of control). Before I started this diet, I had a lot of cravings, too, but not as much as I do now. I just have...
  19. I feel hungry a lot, too, but have more problems with cravings. I'm constantly craving desserts and carbs. My diet before I was on the gluten-free included a fair amount of these foods but I didn't have such strong cravings then. It is weird because even though I sometimes know I'm full, I still feel "hungry" to try all these new foods, esp. baked goods.
  20. I'm having a similar issue. I was diagnosed with celiac disease in May. I have been on the gluten-free diet since early May, yet have not had any relief. I never had the stomach and GI issues except acid reflux and some weight loss. My other main issues are fatigue, insomnia, restless legs, anxiety/depression, sinus congestion (pollen allergies?), back problems...
  21. Interesting that you mention the Irish thing. I suspect that I got it from my mom's side of the family and they have Scots-Irish heritage. So I guess it's not unusual to have Celiac even though neither of my parents have it. However, my mom is suspicious that her test results may have been wrong. She has goiter (severe hypothyroid), fibromyalgia and sleep...
  22. Funny that you mention Finland. I'll be going there in 2 weeks! I can't wait.
  23. I did have a few traumatic events in my life. In March of 2001, I was in a horrible Amtrak train crash. Fortunately, I was not badly injured but there was someone who was killed in my car and it was extremely terrifying. Later that year, in August 2001, I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease. I had caught it while traveling in New Jersey. Fortunately, I caught...
  24. I've searched a lot on the internet, but can't seem to come up with much on particular tour companies that specify in gluten-free travel tours. I know of Ruth and Bob's Gluten-fee Getaways, but was wondering if there were any other such companies. Also, the Ruth and Bob's getaways are pretty pricey, so more budget minded tours would be great. Does anyone...
  25. I discovered Rose's Wheat-free bakery in Evanston. It's got great baked goods as well as a small cafe. Also stuff for people with allergies to casein, etc.
