Hi Guys I'm the one that started the thread back in early fall. We had a news broadcast on our local Fox network talking about the show 'House' having a celiac episode coming up somtime soon. They interviewed a local woman who had celiacs and did a pretty good job explaining the disease. I have practically religiously watched the show so that I can...

A while back I remember someone posting a story about a gluten-free pizza restaurant in NY. Something about a celiac man crying becasue it was the first time in almost 10 years that he had had real pizza oven pizza and real beer. We are heading to New York in a couple weeks and I thought I would check it out. Maybe celiac3270 was the one who posted...

ARCHIVED Newly gluten-free
watkinson replied to Lollie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sorry, I posted here yesterday (2 posts up) and accidentally said "too many false positives" Of course I meant to say too many false negatives. In other words our testing isn't good and people go away being told thier tests were negative for celiacs when they really do have the disease. They go home, continue in their life style and continue to be sick... -
ARCHIVED Most Annoying Comments/questions

Here's another one I just remembered. Someone on this thread made the comment that people just don't listen. How about this one. My best friend, the woman that saw me the sickest, the one that I expained until my head popped off what was going on with me....what being a celiac means....what I can and cannot eat and why...the one I went to lunch with..... -

My daughter who is also a celiac went down to New Orleans a couple weeks ago with a group from out church to help with some rebuiding. One night the group of them went to a restaurant for dinner. Pretty much everything on the menu was fried. My daughter tried to explain to the waitress what the problem was and could she get anything fresh not fried... -
ARCHIVED Newly gluten-free
watkinson replied to Lollie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Lollie, Welcome! Many of the people on this board have experienced the same thing. I was always sick as a child, started getting what I call attackes (Severe stomach pain, with liquid diareah and vomitting) in my teens. Crippling joint pains in my early 20's along with eczema and rashes on my face, neck, and shoulders. As the years went... -
ARCHIVED Roasted Nuts

I'm sorry, I should clarify....I didn't mean to say that Snickers snack size is not gluten-free, I said Snickers because it was a candy that I eat all the time. I just meant some candies snack sizes are not gluten-free. I can't even remember which one now. It was Chritmas time a year ago. We got a bag of something snack size and saw in the ingredients... -
ARCHIVED Grains/gluten & Weight Gain
watkinson replied to CMCM's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
For me it was because I was hypothyroid. I lost about 30 lbs. when I went gluten-free. I eat more food now, and more often and certainly retain the foods that I am eating. Unlike before! I couldnt' understand how someone who had chronic diahreah and was always throwing up could be chubby. It's like this... your body thinks you are starving and shuts... -

sugar free metamucil prescription medications gluten-free candy that you eat all the time, like Snickers, but the snack size is not gluten-free. Foods that are in the gluten-free area, but are not gluten-free, just wheat free. -
Hi Amanda, Getting glutened sucks I'm sorry you have to deal with it. The great thing is that you realized it very quickly. The problem is that our anitbodies attack and "kill" the gluten but they also attack and kill our healthy cells. Getting glutened can set off tons of physical responses. For me I am sick to stomache for a couple days and then...

ARCHIVED Very Upset!
watkinson posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My daughter and I (who are both celiacs) stopped by a store that we frequent in Clarksville Maryland. It's called Root's. A great store! However.....We were thrilled to see on the wall in the back, rack after rack of gluten-free foods, with a big sign that said "welcome to our new gluten free section". Wow!! escellent!! But looking through... -
Does anyone know of a good almond shortbread type of cookie recipe? My favorite cookie especially at Christmas time is my Mom's almond thumbprint cookies. I thought they would be great gluten-free because they are kind of a dry cookie anyway. But they crumble apart in your hand. The taste is pretty good but the consistency is kinda gritty. They actually...

I run 3 to 4 times a week on my treadmill. I strap 3 pound weights to my ankles, and run with a slight incline on the treadmill the whole time. I go about 3 miles. Afterwards I get on the eliptical (sp) for about 20 minutes with the most resistance and speed I can do. I have worked myself up to this slowly over the last year. I suffered terribly from...

ARCHIVED Msg, Good Or Bad
watkinson replied to kathy1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
MSG is actually a chemical. It chemically changes (tricks) your brain into thinking that the food you are eating, tastes better than is does. It is gluten free, but some celiacs respond badly to it, maybe we are extra sensative. It is a terrible product. For some people it can actualy induce psycotic episodes. It makes certain foods very addictive... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms
watkinson replied to covsooze's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Actually there is a great list of related symtpoms, diseases and disorders right on this site. Go to celiac. com home page, scroll down to the bottome of the page and click on (I think it's) the 13th line. It says celiac disease: associated diseases and disorders or sometihing like that. Wendy -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Get Really Cold Feet And Hands?
watkinson replied to DonnaD's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi everyone, Have you looked into peripheral neuropothy? It's nerve damage caused by the celiacs. My hands and feet were always numb and tingling, with shooting pains going up and down my arms and legs. since going gluten-free over 2 years ago the numbness, tingling and pains are virtually gone (after suffering these problems for years.) But they are... -
ARCHIVED Lipsticks
watkinson replied to Lisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
For an inexpensive alternative....Wet and Wild lipstick is gluten-free. To answer newo ikkin...I'm sorry but yes...you have to worry about gluten in your lipstick. After all we lick and bite out lips all day, of course we would ingest the lipstick. As a matter of fact, when I used a lipstick that had gluten in it without realizing it, my lips... -
ARCHIVED Chilli Ingrediants
watkinson replied to bluelotus's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I love my chilli recipe, I basically just throw in a bunch of stuff. 1 pound of hamburger meat, browned, drained and rinsed 2 cans organic pinto beans 1 can organic black beans 1 can stewed Contadina tomatoes 1 pkg. McCormick mild taco seasoning and 1/2 pkg. McCormick hot taco seasoning. Why not just add medium seasoning you ask? because... -
ARCHIVED Little Miss Bottomless Pit
watkinson replied to Nantzie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Have you had her thyroid levels checked? It sounds like it could be hyperthyroid, You can google it to see more symptoms. I would definely have her checked out for celiacs. It is a terrible thing to go through many years of being sick only to discover you had celiacs all along. good luck, Wendy -
ARCHIVED What Are Your Favorite Natural Cures That Are Lost
watkinson replied to Jnkmnky's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I am the hugest fan of omega 3 fatty acids, (fish oil). Studies show this thing to be the end all of end alls. Books have been written on the subject. Phsyciatrists are using it with great success. It is wonderful for your heart, lowers cholesterol, has been shown to reverse the effect of both types of arthritis, has even cured cases of deprssion... -
I feel it's obvious that there is absolutley a relationship between sleep distrubances and Celiacs. We know without a doubt that having celiac disease can and will affect the brain and central nervous system. Having Periferal Neuropothy, fibromyalgia, and restless leg syndrom are all connected to the central nervous system. It's all about nerve damage...
