  1. Would love to meet others in beaches area to share recipes, restaurant info, etc.
  2. Hi Steph, I'm taking Three-Lac, sold by Global Health Traxx. I believe it's considered a probiotic, but it's definitely touted as helping to control the candida overgrowth which our celiac symptoms have created over the years. Sue
  3. I recently moved to Sussex County, Delaware and must start all over with doctors! Anyone know of a celiac-knowledgeable doctor in the beaches area? Also, any support groups around? (The CSA website gave me only one link, and it didn't work.) Thanks. Sue
  4. Celia, I did ask the waiter to make sure that they didn't add croutons to the salad and explained to him that I had a gluten allergy, which meant no bread or pasta. He even asked me a little more about celiac, out of curiosity. So I really don't think that contamination was the issue. I'm just about convinced it was the dressing, or perhaps the marinade...
  5. To Laura: No, you weren't too harsh. I understand your passion and where you are "coming from." And I appreciate your concern. To all: I think eating out is a huge challenge unless we are assured, IN WRITING, that we are in safe hands. Seems to me the only way to know for sure is if the restaurant provides a gluten-free menu. Then we know that...
  6. I guess CarlaB knows more about Maggianos than I do. I usually stay away from the Italian restaurants because of all the pasta offerings. But I would add to your list of Chicago restaurants Wildfire, which has a gluten free menu. They have steaks and chops, but a wider variety of other offerings. They have a location a few blocks from N. Michigan St as...
  7. Russ, You're not going to believe this, but not only do I have Celiac, I am also Malignant Hyperthermia susceptible! I know the two are completely unrelated, but I just thought I'd share that little item with you. In fact, not only am I MHS, but I founded MHAUS in 1981 and attended the ASA meeting in Chicago in October where MHAUS had a 25th anniversary...
  8. PEANUTS????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  9. Didn't see anybody mention Dr. Fassano at the Univ of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. He is one of the best known celiac experts in the country and is usually quoted or featured in any articles you see in the popular press. He is a pediatric gastro (?) and only does the celiac clinic on Fridays, but I made an appointment with him for this Friday,...
  10. Okay, here goes! I hope I can write this in a way that is both cathartic for me and doesn't bore the hell out of the reader. My MAJOR symptoms (and stay tuned, I'll talk about my minor symptoms later) began to occur about eight years ago, following two fairly major surgeries (which involved some bone transplants). After eating out one night (and it...
  11. Sinenox, It does sound like you need a good workup for rectal bleeding. BUT, if nothing of note is found, I'd just like to relate my sense that it might POSSIBLY be related to intestinal/stomach damage due to celiac disease. My father had severe internal and intestinal bleeding for years and nothing could be found during his many hospital stays. We...
  12. I've been on the gluten-free diet for 2 1/2 years, mostly with good success. But yesterday, I ate lunch at an Olive Garden, ordering about the only thing on the menu which appeared to be gluten-free -- the chicken caesar salad. About half-way through my meal, I began to experience mild celiac disease symptoms and have been dealing with them ever since ...
  13. Electra, I, too, had a trip to the ER by ambulance a couple of years ago (before I knew I had celiac disease) with pain and bloating. It was like being in the final stages of labor, but the pain was just under my ribcage. I was on a morphine drip for the pain and after numerous MRIs and CAT scans with barium, it resolved (I think the barium acted like...
  14. That's so interesting . . . and such an epiphany for me. Thanks.
  15. I used to get exactly what you're describing all over my scalp -- I would pick at the sores because they bothered me, then they would crust over. Since going gluten free, the scalp has improved alot, but the shampoo and conditioner I use has probably helped, too. It is Frederic Fekkai and is VERY EXPENSIVE, but worth it in several scores. I never knew...
  16. OH MY GOD!!!!!! It's finally made some sense to me, after all these years! I, too, started having irregular periods and hormonal changes in my mid-thirties, and had my last period when I was about 38. No one could give me any explanation. I had 2 children by a previous marriage, but my new husband and I wanted to have one of our own -- very frustrating...
  17. Dear Maxdad, I, too, started to feel amazingly better within 24 hours or so of cutting gluten from my diet. I was experiencing such bad bouts of nausea, vomiting, bloating, diarrhea, etc. almost daily and thought I was dying of something horrible and weird -- the doctors just hadn't told me what yet. But when I found Celiac info on the web, ON MY OWN...
  18. Oh yes, yes, yes . . . bloated constantly, but especially in the midst of a celiac attack! I had such bad symptoms for so long (6 years before I diagnosed myself 2+ years ago) that I think my abdomen is just permanently swollen. I can't find clothes to fit and just generally feel depressed about it. Wish someone could tell me more about it and whether...
  19. Carla, I, too, get a red patch near my hairline. I don't think it has anything to do with the shampoos I use. I think it shows up when (periodically) I get glutened. It just goes away with a little time. Had never heard of Execalm, but think I'll try it.
  20. Recently, I've been thinking that my huge midriff (from the waist to just under the boobs!) is maybe caused by malnutrition. Remember pictures you've seen of starving children in Africa? That's just what I look like except that I'm 30 to 40 lbs. overweight. My mother has been comparably overweight in her older years, but her shape is totally different...
  21. I have a mild (by my definition) head tremor that my husband is scared may be early Parkinson's. I've had it for years and it has never worsened, so I haven't followed up with a neurologist. But your question poses new possibilities. Hmmmmm . . .
  22. I agree about the weight challenges. I can go on the most extreme diet in the world, and not lose a pound! I play tennis 4 or 5 times a week, eat healthy and still remain 30 or so pounds overweight. I think I've actually dropped a pound or two since trying to go gluten-free (7 months ago). I figured I would have lost a lot more than that since my sweet...
  23. I'm fairly new to this. Having read many posts around the board, I'm pretty sure that the outbreaks I get in my scalp (and have for years and years) are DH. But reading others' experiences, I am now remembering a huge outbreak I had on my midriff a few years ago (before I knew about Celiac). It was red, itchy and painful. I thought it was shingles, but...
  24. Again, I can only add to the chorus of "take your diagnosis and run with it" messages you are getting. I suspect that you are "younger" and have not yet done the horrific damage to your small intestine that I have. I was in my early fifties when I began to have awful gastric symptoms. Seven years, many tests, and significant numbers of trips to the emergency...
  25. My son, who works in investment banking, told me a few months ago about a company that had developed a mini-camera, the size of a pill, which could be swallowed. The camera would then work its way through the GI system, taking photos along the way. The manufacturer specifically talked about how useful it was in detecting Celiac Disease. I imagined it was...
