  1. What genes did your children get tested for? Approximately 1/3 of Americans of European descent are HLA DQ2 or DQ8 positive (I believe that these are the genes that are routinely tested for in commercially available testing), and obviously, not all of these people go on to develop celiac disease. Also, there is increased recognition that there are other...
  2. Thank you. I think that this must be the answer and it was interesting to read other's comments about their reactions to tara gum in the link you provided. I am positive that there was not tara gum added to Breyer's ice cream when I had eaten it in the past. Now it all makes sense....I know that my body does not tolerate tara gum.
  3. This is totally normal. In my first six months of being gluten free I got sick after playing with Play Dough with my kids and making Christmas cookies, things which I was able to do on a regular basis without symptoms before going gluten free. I also reacted strongly to cross-contamination in the foods I ate; I would feel sick after eating foods with no gluten...
  4. My understanding is that 1/3 of all Americans of European descent have either the DQ2 and/or DQ8 HLA antigens on genetic testing (and obviously, not all have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity). "Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic" by Peter Green, M.D., is a great book to check out if you haven't already.
  5. Unless you have a colonoscopy along with celiac testing, you will never have your answer. The only way to diagnose Crohn's disease is through a colonoscopy.
  6. I would not put your 2 year daughter on a gluten free diet until she has been tested for celiac, or at least seen and evaluated by a peds GI specialist. A LOT of toddlers have loose stools (most do not have celiac disease), and there are tons of reasons why a child could have low iron levels (the most common reason is actually drinking too much cow's milk...
  7. I was recently at an Ulta beauty store and the sales associate was able to lead me to gluten free products. You can order online from them but I am not sure if their gluten free list is online. They carry all of the drug store brands, but also higher end cosmetics like Clinique and Lancome.
  8. I use the Target generic prenatal vitamin, it is clearly marked gluten free.

    ARCHIVED Fever

Hi Daisy, I had a chronic low grade fever prior to being diagnosed and going gluten free. Now, my temperature rises to 100.8 everytime I get glutened. The fever usually lasts for 1-2 days and then my temperature normalizes. My understanding is that this is part of the autoimmune cascade for some of us. I hope that you start to feel better soon. Although...
  10. I am pretty sure I am not lactose intolerant because I drink milk and eat cheese and yogurt without a problem. I have also eaten other types of ice cream recently without a problem. Thank you for the idea though.
  11. I have been eating Breyer's chocolate and vanilla ice cream over the past week, and keep feeling like I am getting cross-contaminated with gluten. I have not eaten any other new foods. I have been able to eat both of these flavors in the past without a problem, the last time was probably 3 to 4 months ago. I am also able to ingest dairy/lactose without a...

    ARCHIVED Mcflurries?

Hi Janet, That is good to know that a separate spoon is used. Thanks for the information.

    ARCHIVED Mcflurries?

I agree that the machine is probably contaminated. I don't eat at McDonald's, but do they mix in candy bars and other ingredients into the McFlurry? If so, that could be the source of contamination, similar to why we can't eat Blizzards at Dairy Queen.
  14. I turn to Larabars, KIND bars, and rice cakes smeared with peanut butter and Nutella when I need a quick "filling" snack. I'm able to tolerate dairy, so I also snack on cheese sticks and yogurt. Fresh fruits and veggies are easy too. I like to make salads from fresh tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil, which I'll toss in olive oil before eating.

    ARCHIVED Update #2

Hi Simona, Are you sure that you are not getting trace amounts of gluten in your diet? For the first few months after I went gluten free, my body would strongly react to the slightest amount of cross-contamination, but it seems like that has gotten better with time. Perhaps you could try a "whole foods" diet for a few weeks, i.e. fruits, veggies, plain meats...

    ARCHIVED Pyroluria?

Hi Nadia, I have never heard of pyroluria, and it is not in my medical textbooks. If it is a Latin based word, like most medical terms, it would translate to something along the lines of "fire urine" as pryo means fire and uria refers to urine/urinary tract. Are you talking about polyuria? If so, that means that person makes too much urine, usually due to...
  17. Thank you so much for the ideas ladies! I will start working on cooked apples with cinnamon and add in cookie crumbles today to curb my craving. I really appreciate your help!

    ARCHIVED Update #2

I had problems with orthostatic hypotension for years before being diagnosed with celiac, and since being gluten free the last year and a half, my blood pressure has normalized and I no longer feel dizzy when standing up. I do believe that the two are related.
  19. I agree that you should meet with your OB to discuss. I do know plenty of women, both personally and professionally, who have had healthy babies in their early forties. Good luck!!
  20. I definitely reacted to these the two times that I tried them.
  21. Hi, I need help. I am pregnant again and am craving apple pie. Do any of you have any suggestions for pre-made gluten-free frozen apple pies and/or crusts that I can fill and bake? Or bakeries that may be able to ship apple pie to me? I am so desperate that I would actually settle for any type of fruit filled pie at this point! Thanks a bunch! J
  22. I have felt sick after eating M&Ms, Snickers, and Reese's peanut butter cups. I have been able to eat Dove chocolate without getting sick. The last time I spoke to Mars, they do have a gluten free list, but some of the "gluten free" chocolates are made on shared lines.
  23. One additional observation from the MD posts on Sermo was that there is a generalized belief that it is impossible for a patient to actually follow through with a gluten free diet. I had one MD actual comment to me that I "probably eat gluten all day long without realizing it." I offered him to come and spend a day with me and test my fruit, plain chicken...
  24. I am a doctor and I have celiac disease which was just diagnosed last year. When I was in medical school 10 years ago, I had one lecture on celiac and we had a patient with celiac spend 45 minutes describing her symptoms and what it was like to be gluten free. She had all of the typical GI symptoms. There was not much awareness in the medical community 1...
  25. It sounds like you probably got glutened from Moe's. A lot of us react very strongly to small amounts of gluten after being gluten free. The last I checked, Moe's chips were listed as made from flour tortillas and not safe for celiacs, although maybe they changed their ingredients.
