    ARCHIVED Confused

Dr. Haas had all of his celiacs in the first half of the 20th century avoid all grains because there was not awareness at this time that gluten was the harmful protein. It scares me that people are using his research so out of context.
  2. I had a similar reaction when I drank a G2 gatorade about a year ago, I also had some sharp abdominal pains with the light-headedness. I have never had a problem after drinking regular Gatorade. I think that I must of reacted to the artificial sweetener. I do not think it was a gluten reaction because I did not have prolonged symptoms (stiffness, fever, fatigue...
  3. A positive ANA is usually associated with an autoimmune disease (it can also be elevated in certain infections and it is not unusual for it be a false positive either). My ANA is always positive due to my celiac and Hashimoto's disease. It is a test doctors will run if there is a concern about some type of autoimmune disease, but by itself, it does not mean...
  4. Hi Zentex, I had a history of IBS for years before being diagnosed with celiac last year, but am pretty sure that I had celiac all along. My main sources of fiber are fruits and vegetables, as I think is probably the case for many of us on here. If you've been casual about being gluten free, you have probably been getting a fair deal of cross-contamination...
  5. I was diagnosed last year when I was 33 after having symptoms for at least 15 years. But, I think it all started when I was 8 or 9, because I remember having a really itchy rash all over my back and shoulders which no one could diagnose (probably DH) and my abdomen was bloated all of the time. It took about 9-10 months of being gluten free for my body to...
  6. I agree with ravenwoodglass. With both a family history of celiac and borderline blood tests, it's entirely possible that he had both acute appendicitis and he is somewhere on the celiac spectrum. I had never heard of "chronic appendicitis" so I looked in some medical textbooks and could not find it described. Is it some sort of "new" diagnosis which has...
  7. I am very sorry about your daughter's diagnosis of CP. I was undiagnosed during all 3 of my pregnancies as well, and I have researched this topic extensively (the effects of undiagnosed celiac disease on the developing fetus). There is no known link between maternal celiac disease and poor placental blood flow. Celiac disease does effect fertility and may...

    ARCHIVED Pre-Run Fuel?

I am also a runner and have been doing half marathons. The nights before races I eat a lot of sweet potatoes. In the mornings before long runs/races I will eat bananas and a Larabar. I also carry Gu gels with me while I run, all flavors are gluten free. Gatorade is safe for celiacs, but some Powerades do have gluten in them (not sure which ones because I...
  9. Hi Bridget, I was just at my local Target yesterday and they had the double caramel Magnum bars in the freezer case. I checked the ingredient label and it was the same as the one you had originally asked a question about, in the ingredient list for the caramel it stated carraggean (wheat). This was the same Target where I had bought the double caramel bars...
  10. Hebrew National are safe here in the U.S. Not sure if they sell them in Ontario.
  11. That is really strange. The box I bought last month definitely did not list wheat in the ingredients. But, I agree that I would not risk eating the box that you bought, and I am not going to risk eating them again either. It is frustrating to have such inconsistent labeling!
  12. I bought the double caramel chocolate bars last month. They did not list wheat as an ingredient and I did not get sick from them. I am super sensitive and react to small amounts of cross-contamination. I just went to the Magnum USA website and none of the six ice cream bars on the site contain wheat in the ingredients. Where did you buy yours?
  13. I experienced brain fog a lot my first 5 or 6 months of being gluten free, it seemed like it got worse with every "slip up" I made with gluten. I did some reading and found that the neurologic effects of gluten can be attributed to not having enough Vitamin B12. I started taking Vitamin B12 500 mcg per day (this is the usual dose in over the counter supplements...
  14. I used to eat Dove chocolates all of the time with no problem, but just reacted to one of their chocolate Easter bunnies (made on shared lines). If you ever melt down your own chocolate wafers to make your own candies, Mercken's milk and dark chocolate wafers are great and are gluten free (and they are produced on dedicated lines).
  15. Lisa, Thank you so much for posting this! Your work is truly appreciated!
  16. if you have had thyroid damage from Hashimoto's disease, you will always be hypothyroid, no matter if you are gluten free or not. You may find that you require a lower dose of levothyroxine due to improved absorption from the gut (due to being gluten free) but this is a non-reversible condition.
  17. It sounds just like eosophilic esophagitis (EE). My husband has EE and I have celiac. We share a GI doc, and he has seen a lot of patients with celiac develop EE and vice versa.
  18. Hi Jonny, My husband has eosinophilic esophagitis (EE). He does not have celiac, but he was diagnosed 2 years ago via endoscopy because he had progessively worse problems with swallowing and getting food stuck in his throat. I do not have EE, but I have celiac, and we share a GI doc. Our GI physician has noticed that a lot of his celiac patients have EE...
  19. I had a sort of similar experience last fall. I ran a half marathon in October and then got glutened the next day. I am super sensitive and it was one of the only times that I have really been glutened and not just cross-contaminated since I was diagnosed. I had GI symptoms for about 1-2 days, then I was horribly "hung over" feeling, fatigued, and dizzy for...
  20. I have been to two weddings since being diagnosed last year. When I sent in the RSVP card I requested a gluten free dinner (both weddings were for close friends of mine who already knew that I'm a Celiac). At the first wedding there were actually 5 or 6 guests who were gluten free and at the second there were 2 or 3 of us. My plates had slightly different...
  21. In immunology there are two main categories of immune cells, T cells and B cells. I think that they mean that celiac disease is T-cell mediated (adaptive) like most other autoimmune diseases (lupus, RA, Crohn's, etc.), and that gluten sensitivity is B-cell mediated, or innate), more along the lines of an allergic disorder of sorts. Toll-like receptors (TLRs...
  22. This article was just published in the March 9th BMC journal, A. Fasano is one of the authors. It is one of the first articles I've come across in a medical journal to acknowledge that gluten sensitivity/intolerance is a true diagnosis. Hopefully there will be more to come....... Divergence of gut permeability and mucosal immune gene expression in two...
  23. Thank you all for your responses and comments. I called Hershey's because I have had my usual celiac symptoms after eating a regular sized peanut butter cup on two separate occasions in the past year (and no, I am not lactose intolerant, soy intolerant, or have any problems with emulsifiers or any of the other ingredients in them). I am extremely sensitive...
  24. I just got off of the phone with a customer service representative from Hershey's. They do have a gluten free list, but do not post it on their website and are unable to email a printed copy because it changes so often. As of today, the only Hershey's candies which are gluten free are: 1. Hershey's kisses 2. Hershey's 1.55 ounce chocolate bar 3. Hershey...
