ARCHIVED Skin Has Gotten Worse Since Going gluten-free
itchy replied to Deacon's Garden's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
As I mentioned, DH seems to have some 'momentum'. In my case some areas of my skin broke out after my gluten intake was reduced to about zero. These were new areas not previously affected, and were getting worse even as other areas were healing. Now, months later these new areas are finally healing. I don't have an explanation, but I assume there is... -
ARCHIVED Does This Sound Like It Is Caused By Gluten?
itchy replied to misslexi's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
squirmingitch: Yes, they sting. They only itch in the very last stage of healing. During the worst times large sections of my skin would be actually painful. Couldn't call myself stingy, though, could I? :-) -
ARCHIVED Skin Has Gotten Worse Since Going gluten-free
itchy replied to Deacon's Garden's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
DH can be very slow to respond and can get worse or even break out in new places even when your gluten consumption is way down. Don't give up hope too soon. -
ARCHIVED Does This Sound Like It Is Caused By Gluten?
itchy replied to misslexi's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
misslexi: Possibly Dermatitis Herpetiformis, especially considering the intolerance to milk, and the stomach problems. But what you describe doesn't sound typical. You might consider searching the web for photos of DH. As soon as I saw them, I knew what I had. The thing is, if it's DH she would have to go entirely wheat free. 98% isn't good enough in... -
It sounds like you are finding some relief diandliam. Right on. I agree Hopeful1950. Looking back helps to put it in perspective. Ironically when I was really suffering the lesions were invisible beneath my clothing and few noticed. Now that the problem is less severe the lesions have appeared on my face and I get more sympathy and cooperation. I...

ARCHIVED Reaction / Symptoms/signs: Iodine Vs Gluten
itchy replied to Di2011's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
diandliam: Great question. That's the kind of basic research we need. My hunch is that there is only one response for each person regardless of the nature of gluten intake or iodine intake, but that it varies a lot between individuals. But only research and people's anecdotes will confirm that. I'm afraid I can't help much. I only get one type of response... -
ARCHIVED Getting Enough Calcium & Vitamins
itchy replied to squirmingitch's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Prickly Pear: I didn't mean to minimise the suffering. I've certainly experienced excruciating symptoms of DH and I can well imagine that there are others that have it much, much worse than me, especially judging from the photos on the internet. Perhaps my observations are coloured by the fact I've never been able to detect a strong response to iodine... -
ARCHIVED Is A Contact Dh Reaction Ever Extremely Short
itchy replied to domesticactivist's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Don't get me wrong, I think one can get hives or other similar reactions in seemingly a split second, and have them go away almost as quickly. I've had it happen. Once I found myself covered in hives in the middle of the night and scratched (clawed) myself silly. They were gone in the morning without a trace. My point was that I get the impression that... -
ARCHIVED Getting Enough Calcium & Vitamins
itchy replied to squirmingitch's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Hi squirmingitch Just checked a couple earlier posts, where you mention you eat hash browns and don't eat oatmeal. Personally I consider hash browns a high risk due to browning agents containing wheat that are used to make them look nice fried up. Without checking labels I wouldn't know, however. Where I live it is easy to buy wheat... -
ARCHIVED Getting Enough Calcium & Vitamins
itchy replied to squirmingitch's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Why do you feel you have to avoid iodine? Preventing bone disease seems a higher priority than preventing DH. In theory DH will go away on its own once you get the gluten out of your diet and leave enough time. Calcium and iodine are both essential to health, wheat gluten is not. Also, I'm curious why you eliminate dairy? I still can't tolerate... -
Thanks for all your great points, squirmingitch. Many of us on here probably diagnosed ourselves from the internet after months or years of frustration in medical offices. Several physicians pooh-poohed my suspicions of gluten intolerance over the years, and steered me away from the correct diagnosis. Only with information from the internet was I...

ARCHIVED Is A Contact Dh Reaction Ever Extremely Short
itchy replied to domesticactivist's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
There appears to be little research about the range of responses that people have. Therefore it is hard to distinguish between direct responses to gluten, and coincidences. From my limited knowledge of the process, I am skeptical that a response would develop so quickly from a very limited contact like playing cards, and then disappear within minutes... -
ARCHIVED Acne Clearing Up On Gluten-Free Diet?
itchy replied to suziq0805's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
There seems to be a wide range of responses to gluten for those of us who are sensitive to it. In the end, does it matter whether it is DH or not, so long as swearing off gluten-containing foods fixes the problem? Prior to developing full blown DH I had a number of minor and untypical skin symptoms that, looking back, were probably gluten induced. And... -
ARCHIVED I Need Help Understanding
itchy replied to squirmingitch's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Hi squirmingitch: Many of your symptoms certainly seem like they are celiac related. I was under the impression that most DH lesions had bloody fluid, rather than clear or amber. You say that you itch, but what you describe sounds more like intense stinging, which is certainly a DH characteristic. Why do you say that you can't eat nuts? I consider seeds... -
ARCHIVED How To Keep "un-Scratched" "lesions" "unscratched" For Testing
itchy replied to Di2011's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Curiously, all the posts I made yesterday have disappeared, which rather reduces the incentive to spend time replying. But here goes again. My understanding is that biopsies are done BESIDE the lesion, not on it. It shouldn't matter if the lesion is scratched or not. I personally haven't found anything that significantly makes the stinging better... -
There are always so many questions about DH, and so few concise answers. I would be helpful if there was more research on the problem. I think it would be relatively easy to shed light on some of the DH questions. Perhaps even 'citizen research' among us would work if someone was willing to take on overseeing the project. A few people willing to intentionally...

In general, I don't think anyone should assume ahead of time that physical contact with wheat will either cause a reaction or not cause a reaction. Results are too variable among people. For my part, I haven't detected any direct response to touching wheat products or even being in grain dust, in my occasional work in the grain industry. But I...

My dermatologist consultant in England said emphatically that no test would work unless I maintained a high gluten diet for a couple of weeks before testing. (Why would anyone put themselves through that misery). Based on previous comments here, that seems to be the experience. I would find another dermatologist.

ARCHIVED Pic Of Fingers, Could U Help!
itchy replied to Applegirl's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Before I developed full blown DH I had a number of minor rashes, lumps, blisters, scaley patches. These disappeared when the gluten in my diet disappeared. None of these looked like your photo, but given the range of symptoms people have, I wouldn't rule it out. These days it is easy to eat gluten free so it's worth a try to see what happens. -
I hope that you will report back any benefits of your gluten free diet, because there are many people who post on this forum with symptoms that don't sound like classic DH, but could be caused by gluten. Please note that if you aren't consuming gluten, your test for celiac disease will probably come back negative. You need to be consuming quite a lot...

ARCHIVED Is The Rash Suppose To Look Worst Before It Gets Better?
itchy replied to George Knighton's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
It's my impression that there is some 'momentum' involved. After I went gluten free some lesions continued to appear even as the original lesions were healing. My experience, (not avoiding iodine) is that it has been two years. Disclaimer: I work part of the year as a wheat farmer doing my best to avoid dust exposure. I haven't noticed any direct effect... -
I wish I could say. I rarely get a direct response from being 'glutened'. I've accidentally consumed gluten without any noticeable reaction, and I've had responses that I couldn't connect to an exposure. In other instances the reaction has come with a couple of hours after a suspicious event, and the effects have lasted for several days. Overall...

ARCHIVED Possible Dh? - Years Of Uncertainty
itchy replied to Kelby's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I suspect that experience varies, so I'll give you mine as one possibility. After two years of gluten free diet, with some occasionally 'mistakes', most of the lesions have disappeared to the extent that they are difficult or impossible to detect. Some of them remain as raised and scaley patches. A few remain as active lesions, though not severe as they... -
Hi jcolding: Yes, it certainly seems like it could be DH. Lot of people have symptoms that don't resemble typical DH. And sometimes the non-typical symptoms simply presage a DH condition that is getting worse. Or something that isn't DH but still results from eating gluten. Re: iodine. Rosetrapper and I have a somewhat different take on it. Avoiding...

ARCHIVED Making Gluten Bread For Others Is Probably Bad, Right?
itchy replied to Jenniferxgfx's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Jennifer: As with most things regarding DH, it's hard to tell for sure. I don't seem to have an immediate reaction to wheat flour on my skin. On the otherhand last year when my work required me to be exposed to grain dust for several weeks my DH came back quite severely. But your experience of getting itchy spots where you had contact with flour certainly...
