Latest Celiac Disease News & Research:

I concur with above. Especially the comment about photographing the lesions when they are bad. Mine are almost cleared up and it will be difficult to persuade future physicians that I am coeliac, or how bad the rash really was. I have met complete scepticism from the medical community for fifteen years, and when I had the best evidence of coeliac I failed...

We should all be more active in our national coeliac associations, which would seem to be the best avenue for getting more attention for this issue. I only follow the DH threads. Is there another area on this message board where 'political' discussions on issues relating to coeliacs takes place?

ARCHIVED Does Dermatitis Herpetiformis React Well To Regular Antibiotics?
itchy replied to QueenEe's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Actually ravenwood, the actual rates of coeliac have increased dramatically. There was a study, which I don't have time to look up, which compared the rates of antibodies in the current population, to the antibodies in blood stored from the first world war. Coeliac rates are several times higher now, it is not just better identification. Also, the lovely... -

ARCHIVED Does Dermatitis Herpetiformis React Well To Regular Antibiotics?
itchy replied to QueenEe's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
queene: I would interpret your experience differently. When we are sick our immune systems are preoccupied, and perhaps reduced. DH is an autoimmune reaction so DH is probably reduced when the immune system is diverted. I have had the experience of my coeliac symptoms being reduced when I was sick. Unfortunately (sic) I haven`t been sick since I stopped... -
ARCHIVED Feel Like I've Been Glutened
itchy replied to squirmingitch's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Hi squirmingitch I suppose there is a possibility that your quinoa was contaminated or otherwise caused a reaction, but I suspect not. After having had several 'relapses' over the past few months, which I blamed on various things, I've come to the conclusion that these relapses are more like caused by internal factors, not by things I ingest. I've... -
'Also, dapsone can be prescribed for Linear IgA Disease and I believe a few others. But if it works it's a very good indicator.' Yes, I apologise for my misinformation. Not having considered taking it I don't know much about it.

ARCHIVED Biopsy Results - No Dh
itchy replied to JaneWhoLovesRain's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Great stuff folks. Thanks for the list pricklypear. I would add, Jane--you talked about occasional 'nibbling'. My experience is that any gluten consumption at all will be enough to keep the DH going. I was a 'gluten-free nibbler' for years before the DH broke out, and it was only after I eliminated all the little gluten sources that I started... -
twoxxmom: DH tests are notoriously unreliable. If they say you have DH you probably do. If they say you don't have it, the result cannot be trusted in my opinion, based on the experience of a large number of people who have posted here in the past. As suggested above, if Dapsone works, it is DH. Some other indications would be if the areas around...

ARCHIVED Biopsy Results - No Dh
itchy replied to JaneWhoLovesRain's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Exactly. If all the discussion over several years proves anything, it is that tests for DH are notoriously unreliable. I would not assume that you do not have DH, based on tests, particularly if you have been eating gluten free for a while. In any case labels are of limited use. If gluten free eating provides relief that is the path to take. -
After listening to all the stories for a couple of years now, I suspect there isn't really a 'normal course'. I think that there is a lot of interaction with our own body, stress, iodine, and who knows what else. One thing that seems to be constant is that when there is a relapse (not always caused directly by ingestion of gluten in my experience...

I can't offer much. If you've been reading old messages you will know that your rash isn't typical, but is within the range of skin issues that seem to be related to coeliac disease. And you are up against the conundrum that most face at one time or another, whether to endure a bout of gluten consumption to get tests done that may or may not be definitive...

ARCHIVED Is There Always A Visible Rash?
itchy replied to GiGi F's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
As squirmingitch says, there aren't likely to be any easy, straightforward answers. Many of us had mild symtoms for a while before full blown DH set in. Are your symptoms a precursor to DH, or some other issue completely? Hard to say. You didn't mention whether you have any gastrointestinal issues. DH is coeliac disease. While people with DH often... -
ARCHIVED Bad Dh Breakout After 5 Months Gluten Free
itchy replied to gbrennan's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
A couple of months ago my DH had almost disappeared. Then suddenly it relapsed. Not really badly but enough to be very annoying. Although the same parts of my skin were affected the relapse was open sores and itchy, not inflamed and painful as during previous DH. It still hasn't gone away. I don't think I encountered any gluten, though I was eating... -
Thanks. This is an amazing forum for getting good information and correcting the bad!

ARCHIVED Steel Cut Oats And "gluten Free" Products
itchy replied to Rat's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Thanks for all that good information Skylark, which I accept. As I said, I don't personally take the risk of eating oats not certified wheat free. Especially as they are cheap and readily available where I normally live. On the other hand I had a email conversation with the products manager of a producer of oat products for the health food market who... -
I believe that commercial salt used in processing is not iodised, though it is worth checking. But I would be more concerned about the possibility of gluten in various flavourings of the chips. I eat plain crisps regularly without a problem, but I avoid all the flavoured varieties. MSG is not an issue for celiacs specifically, although many celiacs...

You would think the symmetry would tip off the docs, because scabies wouldn't show the same type of symmetry. When you see the complete confidence that they have as they completely misdiagnose you, it gives one pause about what they might say in more life threatening situations.

ARCHIVED Steel Cut Oats And "gluten Free" Products
itchy replied to Rat's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
My experience is that certified wheat free oats are no problem for me. A big plus in my diet. The problem is that they can be hard to find. Fortunately in my area of Canada there is a relatively low cost supplier. I think that high quality regular oat products wouldn't cause most people too many problems because the grain cleaning process would keep the... -
ARCHIVED Doctor Visit Today - Totally Mortified (:
itchy replied to JaneWhoLovesRain's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Curiously, I've never had a secondary infection at the site of a DH lesion. My theory is that the immune reaction is so hyped up at these spots that no infection can take hold. Just a theory. Jane, don't assume right off that iodine will be a problem. It is for some, not others. I would find out for sure before you needlessly limit your diet. -
ARCHIVED Can Dh Disappear For Years And Then Come Back?
itchy replied to lizk's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
As an auto immune disease DH will also relate to our own bodies and the environment we are in. I think most people with DH will say that they had a variety of skin issues off and on before DH really took hold. Many of these disappeared or got better on a gluten free diet. So were the other issues DH? I've got to the point where I don't think the... -
ARCHIVED If You've Had Dh While Gluten-Free...
itchy replied to lizk's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I wouldn't assume that you have to remove iodine from your diet right off the bat. It affects some people, not others. If you remove iodine from your diet without some indication that it is actually a problem then you are eliminating many valuable nutritional foods and limiting your lifestyle. And you could be setting yourself up for other problems, as... -
ARCHIVED What Kind Of Doctor . . . .
itchy replied to JaneWhoLovesRain's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
The first GP I went to told me he could tell by looking at me that I wasn't coeliac. (Thanks doc, if I'd got on the right track at that point I might not have got DH). My last GP (understand that I live in an isolated area and don't have many choices) said the first time I saw him that there really wasn't anything you could do about coeliac because it... -
ARCHIVED If You've Had Dh While Gluten-Free...
itchy replied to lizk's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Many people with DH do not have GI symptoms as bad as other coeliacs. My GI symptoms went away almost immediately when I became strictly gluten free. That's the key. It's very likely that you are not totally gluten free yet, because for most of us it takes quite a while to learn all the hidden sources of gluten. Though maybe you are more clued in than... -
ARCHIVED Using Otc Anti-Itch Cream On Dh
itchy replied to BeFree's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I can't imagine that using any approved medication will have any negative effect on someone with DH (unless it has gluten or iodine in it, debatably-not everyone has the same reaction to topical gluten or iodine). And probably not much positive effect either. People have success with various creams, etc to help with symptoms, but nothing to my knowledge...
