  1. Another common misdiagnosis is scabies. There are probably a lot more mistakes, because it takes a long time for most people to get diagnosed with DH.
  2. It is an allergic reaction to gluten. I don't believe there is any evidence for the involvement of any microbial organism.
  3. Hopefull, your experience you outlined almost exactly matches mine. Stinging is almost always worse in the evening and that was more pronounced when the lesions were worst. During the day, and at night, I barely noticed the stinging. Also, I am on a very strict diet and have a lot of confidence that I'm not getting gluten from my diet. The lesions...
  4. I don't have a lot of experience with eczema, except that when the dermatologist agreed with me that I had DH on my arms, he dismissed the rash on my shins as 'just eczema'. But that 'eczema' rash waxed and waned with my DH symptoms, and disappeared completely when I finally perfected my gluten free diet. So I'm guessing that some eczema looks very much...

    ARCHIVED Dapsone

I think the iodine issue becomes more tricky for those of us choosing not to use Dapsone. If I'm not mistaken, Dapsone will make the lesions disappear even in the presence of iodine, but for non users of Dapsone iodine may be still aggravate the condition. I'm still experimenting my diet to see if iodine is an issue for me. One saltwater fish meal...
  6. Here's a URL for site that has images that approximate what mine looked like at their worst. Open Original Shared Link Image 13 or 16 would be like my DH, which manifested on my arms. Ugly eh? Makes me realise how much progress I've made.
  7. Bincongo wrote: "My blood work 2 weeks ago said I was doing very well on my diet, no antibiodies. So why do I now develop DH?" Assuming it IS DH, I think that DH may be more sensitive to diet than obvious gastro intestinal symptoms are. A year ago when I got DH on my forearms and realised that my GI symptoms really were celiac, all the GI symptoms disappeared...

    ARCHIVED Dapsone

Just to complicate the matter, I have to say that I have been using aspirin (an NSAID) regularly, and I haven't noticed any negative effect, all positive. But, after three weeks of healing, I had some saltwater fish three days ago and suddenly I'm relapsing a bit. Do other people find that the reaction takes that time, or should I be looking for some...
  9. Coco, I wouldn't say that this isn't DH, because there are a range of symptoms, but generally I think symtoms more typically associated with DH are: intense stinging rather than itching, bright red to purple lesions that don't heal, blisters with reddish fluid, lesions often in lines, often quite symmetrically on both sides of the body, stinging worse in...
  10. Wow! Interesting experiment with the patch. I will try that too. I've even more careful than usual about risky food and avoiding seafood and iodised salt for the last couple of weeks, and my lesions are healing rapidly. It would be very interesting to know whether limiting iodine has been the factor making the difference. Thank you for that idea. I'm...
  11. Lalama, for a couple of years before my DH broke out in force I had a couple of scaley patches on my arms. These eventually became sites of persistent DH, though the scaleyness has gone with a gluten free diet. I would be very suspicious that these are early stages of DH. I had a number of other minor skin bumps and lumps on my skin at the time which...
  12. Marc, your symptoms don't match mine. When I saw the photos of DH and read the typical symptoms I knew instantly I had DH. Lesions that blister, watery red fluid, stinging fiercely rather than itching, failure to heal for extended periods, painful skin, symmetry on the body and a few others symtoms. However, as eatmeat4good said, there is quite a...
  13. I've said it elsewhere, but it might be worth repeating, though it is likely only relevant to Canadians. I really enjoy Messagere beer, available for sure in BC, AB, and PQ It is closer to an English ale, so it may not appeal to lager drinkers. I can't really make a distinction between it and a good British beer. I've tried several gluten free...
  14. Ivan, have you considered starting a small business importing gluten free foods? If coeliac disease is as common there as it is in the English speaking world (it may not be) then there is certainly an opportunity.
  15. The Calgary Herald thinks that labelling food makes us a 'nanny state' I don't see why it is 'nanny state' to expect food or alcohol suppliers to list their ingredients. It seems like common sense.
  16. I hesitate to jump in here before more 'experienced' people write in. I understand your dilemma entirely. As someone who takes extreme precautions but keeps getting lesions, I've wondered how to work back to identify 'mistakes'. I'm starting to get the impression that it might be 12 to 18 hours, since that seems to be how long it takes on those occasions...
  17. But if you keep the lesions in check by limiting iodine, you may be masking the fact that you are still getting gluten. It may be masking damage being done to your GI system. I would say that if someone gets DH symptoms after putting iodine back in their diet, they should be addressing the gluten issue, not the iodine issue primarily. Am I making...
  18. I wonder if avoiding iodine isn't a risky approach to solving your problem. I don't think it is adviseable to eliminate iodine from one's diet completely; that's why we have iodized salt in NA, to eliminate certain thyroid problems and goiters, etc. Especially if you live inland. The real problem is the gluten. Because eliminating iodine makes the...
  19. Hopefully it will clear up quickly if you have a very strict gluten free diet. Aside from the iodine suggestions (and you can't really eliminate iodine long term without affecting your health) nothing else is likely to make it better, in my experience at least. I experience the stinging most intensely during the evening and early morning. Those are the...
  20. Canadave, I have to disagree with you about Messagere beer. Open Original Shared Link I think it is fantastic beer, the best I've enjoyed anywhere. Tastes differ, I guess. It wouldn't suit someone who prefers lager, I suspect. It almost replaces the English real ales I've grown to love living in the UK. Messagere is available in many BC govt liquor...
  21. Best wishes. I'm sure that others will agree that eating gluten free isn't that unpleasant and one tends to eat healthier. Eating out is filled with pitfalls.
  22. My experiences are more or less consistent with the other posters. It is common that tests come back negative. Unless the doctors have specific plans to test you again, I encourage you to go gluten free. (Maybe after getting your results back) I say this because, like me, you seem to have symptoms of both DH and coeliac. I also had moderate GI symptoms...
  23. Has anyone noticed that citrus aggravates their DH? I've recently had a relapse of my DH that corresponds to a period where I ate a lot of citrus (it's cheap at this time of year). Lately I've cut back and the DH is better, but it may just be a coincidence.
  24. TPT: I am self diagnosed after being told I didn't have celiac disease and being tested for many other things over 15 years. But I knew I was wheat intolerant and minimised it for a long time until the DH appeared. I self diagnosed from symptoms described on the internet: extreme stinging especially in the evening, location of blistering, and the very...
  25. Thanks much for the replies. After the initial blistering stopped many months ago I rarely get any blistering. But the sores have worsened recently and come and go with intense stinging, and are bright red, and refuse to heal over with healthy skin. Aspirin is quite effective against the stinging, but has no apparent effect on the sores. I can't detect...
