ARCHIVED Advice Needed For Almost 5 Year Old
domesticactivist replied to thegirlsmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The fact that she is sometimes able to stay dry probably rules this out but I recently met someone whose son had what I think she called a tethered spine. The connection to his bladder just wasn't there so he didn't feel when he needed to go. At 7 he had a simple surgery that corrected the problem overnight. -
ARCHIVED Can 24 Hrs Of Gluten-Free Make You Feel This Much Better?
domesticactivist replied to silveylane's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It sounds like you are on the right track and I'm glad you have found this forum! I want to respond to one thing, though: There are reasons to get a celiac diagnosis if possible. Here are a few: In order to be able to force schools, military, etc to take his diet seriously, you must have an official diagnosis. This is major. People with celiac disease... -
ARCHIVED Can 24 Hrs Of Gluten-Free Make You Feel This Much Better?
domesticactivist replied to silveylane's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree about demanding the full panel. A lab draw should not require waiting four weeks to see a GI specialist. I was able to get ours ordered same day by a family doc. If your dr won't do it, call the other drs in town, explain the problem to scheduling and you just might find someone willing to help. -
ARCHIVED I Just Want The Holidays To Be Over
domesticactivist replied to alex11602's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think the way you are feeling is a normal part of adjusting to your new life. In a way it is a grieving process. Let yourself have those feelings. On the practical side, we bring our entire meal for our family, and a dish to share. This way cross contamination and our other dietary details don't ruin the holiday. This year we are bringing a turkey, stuffing... -
ARCHIVED Advice On Cafeteria Meals For Boarding School Student
domesticactivist replied to LyndaLou's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I realize the ideas I proposed are inconvenient. A week of food would require 6 hours driving, not 12 - still a big sacrifice. Walk ins are crowded but shed have to have food there one way or the other - or could be given a fridge in her room or community area. Another thought is she could do her own once a week cooking in a community or church kitchen.... -
ARCHIVED Voices And Other Noises
domesticactivist replied to alex11602's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've recently read articles linking schizophrenia and celiac, and showing that for some folks being gluten free can alleviate schizophrenia symptoms. I'm not saying she has schizophrenia, just thinking there is likely to be some sort of spectrum of symptoms there. I had a couple periods in which I had hallucinations that included sound, or were completely... -
ARCHIVED Do I Have Celiac Disease
domesticactivist replied to contrarianrevolution's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
It sounds like you are really searching for answers. So you do care about something.., that's good! There are so many possible causes of apathy. Do you have other things going on? Any physical symptoms? Hard things you are dealing with (or avoiding) in life? Lots of people are finding connections between gut health and mood. You might find it interesting... -
ARCHIVED Advice On Cafeteria Meals For Boarding School Student
domesticactivist replied to LyndaLou's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I know they are supposed to accommodate but the reality is that is a tall order even if they are well educated and willing, which it sound like they are not. I have two ideas. The first one is to send the food yourself. This is what we do when the kids go to overnight camps. Everything is labeled with the day and meal or snack it is for. It's kept in the... -
ARCHIVED 2 Yo Recently Diagnosed - Looking For Some Feedback
domesticactivist replied to semily's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think it's stupid they won't give him the diagnosis and it sounds like you really do have your answer. However, if you plan on sending him to school you absolutely should get the diagnosis. You will need it in order to be able to make sure the school accommodates your child. This issue extends all the way up to the college level, and when it comes time... -
ARCHIVED Bacterial Overgrowth Or Coeliac? (Gas Issues)
domesticactivist replied to pretordan's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Wow, I've never heard of anyone swallowing air except my daughter! When she was about 2-3 years old she had a tic that made her swallow air. She had the most trumpetous loud farts all night long. Her belly was HUGE, too. One time she was in so much pain that I thought that the dr thought she must have broken a rib. She got X-rays and it showed that her stomach... -
ARCHIVED Some Questions
domesticactivist replied to superw's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You might look into paradoxical diarrhea. It's like being both constipated and having diarrhea at the same time. The GAPS diet has helped with that. I've seen enemas recommended for it, too. -
ARCHIVED 15Yo Spontaneously Allergic To Everything?
domesticactivist replied to Chalula88's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Wow! It makes me wonder if something in her environment changed. My son had horrible chronic 'seasonal' allergies. When we removed corn, it all got so much better. It seems like with histamine allergies if the system is excited it starts to be very reactive to everything. I'd look back to the time that everything started flaring and carefully examine every... -
ARCHIVED So Flippin' Frustrated! Dd's Gi Was Useless.
domesticactivist replied to JenC's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
What an ass. Did your husband get the same feeling from him? We had so many doctors address my ex husband instead of me when we were in the hospital, even though I was the one who was clearly tracking, asking questions, etc. Next time that happens I hope your husband will speak up for you and tell the dr to address you, too. Definitely get a full copy of... -
ARCHIVED Cookies Have A Bitter/metallic/salty Taste. What Is It?
domesticactivist replied to birdie22's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I can taste baking soda as a metallic taste. I agree that was probably it. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free...but Not Much Of A Meat Eater!
domesticactivist replied to *charliesmum*'s topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You're welcome. It truly is a big learning curve, but eventually you'll have a good handle on it. I have two kids, ages 11 and 12. They do all the things other kids do... sleepovers, weeks away at camp, birthday parties, classes, and our diet is more complicated than "just" gluten-free. We don't eat out at this point because the gluten-free restaurants use... -
ARCHIVED Thinking Of Testing
domesticactivist replied to kallen123's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Getting the blood work makes sense. You may want to try going gluten-free regardless of the results, but since you can't test for celiac once on a gluten-free diet, you'll want to get the blood work first! What was his stool tested for? -
ARCHIVED 2Yr Old Son Being Tested...should I?
domesticactivist replied to *charliesmum*'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, I would test all members of the family. Make sure you all are eating lots of gluten for a couple months prior to testing. Also, if your children do not turn up positive for celiac and you continue to feed them gluten, make sure to have them retested regularly. This is important since damage doesn't always show up right away and false negatives are common... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free...but Not Much Of A Meat Eater!
domesticactivist replied to *charliesmum*'s topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Welcome to the world of checking product ingredients! Here are the steps I take to find out whether a product is safe: Look at the ingredient label for obvious offenders. If the box isn't handy, look it up online. Most processed food manufacturers have their product ingredients online these days. Look on the package for any disclosures that would indicate... -
ARCHIVED Child Back In Hospital
domesticactivist replied to Mommy2GlutenFreeChild's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
What an ordeal! I know this will sound crazy but has he been tested for pertussis? It is going around this year, even among vaccinated folks. Both my kids got it last year very badly despite having been vaccinated. -

ARCHIVED Fruit And Vegetables
domesticactivist replied to BakingQueen's topic in Super Sensitive People
It seems that when Shauna posts this is often the response. I get that people want newbies to realize they probably don't have to be as vigilant as Shauna. However, I'd like to point out that she never claims everyone needs to be as careful. I think it's very clear that she realizes her level of sensitivity is extreme. However, I for one am very grateful... -
ARCHIVED Serious Behavioral Issues
domesticactivist replied to millersinkenya's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You might look into the GAPS diet. It is gluten free and aimed at fixing behaviour and psychological problems through restored gut health. The book is well worth reading and I have a resources page, guide to starting the diet, and an outline of the first six stages on the blog linked from my profile. You start with just homemade soups and slowly add in each... -
ARCHIVED Help
domesticactivist replied to collgwg's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Soup! Make a simple broth by boiling/simmering bones or a chicken. Strain it then add back veggies you can eat and meat. Boil it until everything is soft and eat it. You might look into GAPS. It does include some foods you can't eat but you introduce each food slowly, and don't introduce foods that are known problems. There's lots of info on it out there...
