  1. I want to respond to the thing about school... you have an active child, and then they punish him for what is likely the result of not having enough activity by taking away the thing that he needs - active play time! Grrrrrr that makes me so mad. I do think consequences are important to set and keep consistent, but I urge you to think of it not from a...
  2. Well, something is definitely up. I hope you continue to work with a medical team on this one. It does sound to me like if you are considering staying with GAPS you should add in more of the recommended foods. GAPS does say to use salt (not iodized, though). And hey, if potatoes make you feel better at this stage in the game they might be just what you...
  3. Have you considered moving further into the diet? It sounds like you haven't even introduced all the stage 1 foods yet. Have you introduced any probiotic foods, probiotic powder, fermented cod liver oil, or trace minerals?
  4. If a person is doing GAPS, it is extremely *high* in saturated fats. Saturated fat from meat, avacados, eggs, dairy and nuts are all some of the first foods introduced on the GAPS diet.
  5. Your symptoms sound to me like they could have to do with poorly regulated blood sugar. I have some questions... How long have you been the GAPS diet? Are you on the full GAPS diet, or still doing intro? What are you eating on a typical day? How often are you eating? Did you read the GAPS book before starting the diet? What supplements, drugs,...
  6. A dietary change may help, but it's also possible that he's just not ready for the school environment. My daughter at 4 was very clingy and had amazingly out of control tantrums. She also had extreme social anxiety. She'd want to take a class/go to a preschool, but not be able to participate appropriately. She'd be reclusive, sitting out, refusing to participate...
  7. Yay! Your little one shares my son's birthday, a good day for babies!!! I'm happy for you that breastfeeding is going well, keep it up, mama
  8. I've begun to believe this great need for fiber in the form of grains is a myth. I've had constipation issues all my life and as a kid my mom would give me fiber powder in my food to counteract that. When we went gluten-free at first we did try processed stuff like rice-flour pasta and crackers and I got very constipated. We eventually decided to try the...
  9. We have been using GAPS for 8 months. I have lots of posts about it on the blog on the site linked from my profile.
  10. Interesting. While it takes a different approach, (diet to restore gut health rather than just supplementation or elimination of IgG indicated foods) the basic concept of gut inflammation causing poor absorption, food reactions, and mental health issues is all covered in the GAPS book as well.
  11. I think the others are right about needing more testing. I have a couple anecdotal things to add. My partner's muscle twitching goes away when she takes concentrace mineral drops. My son's biggest problem was bone and joint pain. Exposure to gluten even in trace amounts brings that back. How careful is she about cross contamination? Part of her problem...
  12. I'm glad you have test results and info about the school that you can work with. With all those antibiotics I hope you will look into probiotics supplements for him and probiotic foods as well. I'd be shocked if he could go to the school with tb, and I really hope your whole family and anyone your son has been in contact with gets tested. My friend's dad...
  13. Casein is not central to the diet. It can be done without it
  14. We are using the GAPS Diet which is aimed at restoring gut health. I've posted a lot about it on this forum and the blog linked from my profile.
  15. I agree it's not all roses and chocolates - but no parenting style is. Good parenting is rewarding but hard work whether the kids are in school or not! I think it's really true that each child has a different personality and each parent has a certain personality and sometimes those things are more compatible than others. It was very difficult...
  16. Venison is wonderful! I wish I had easy access to it I recommend you read the GAPS book and consult your physician rather than take my word for what supplements to use. I have a blog linked from my profile and one of the posts on there is called GAPS Resources. That one has links to the book, etc. We also have a Starting GAPS post and I'm in the process...
  17. I think any parent who loves their kids, is willing to learn with them, and is not going to completely stress out about the "school" aspect can be a great homeschooling parent. A teaching credential has little to add except maybe confidence. NOONE knows everything their child might need to learn. Kids aren't little vessels to be filled with facts, they are...
  18. My kids are 11 and 12 and have never been to school, aside to visit friends once in kindy! We've been homeschooling all along. It has been a wonderful experience for our family. In our state, the laws only require registering the year the child turns 7 and testing periodically. In our city, there are many homeschoolers, with a wide range of driving philosophies...
  19. Our family decided to take a very conservative approach. I do not trust the 20 ppm guideline for reasons many people have posted on this forum. We do our beat to avoid all potential sources of cross contamination. I realize that sometimes we may fail, but at least we have minimized our risk. I have a blog post about going 100 % gluten free on the blog linked...
  20. It sounds like you are on the right track. I want to mention that homemade soups and probiotic foods can be very helpful and healing. Stock is full of nutrients and is easy to absorb. Our family is using the GAPS diet, which progresses in stages as your gut heals. I've got lots of blog entries about it on the blog linked from my profile. The newest entry...
  21. We, too, are in the process of healing our leaky guts. We are using the GAPS diet for this and are 8 months in.
  22. Do you have any local farmers you can buy from? We get our meat from people who raise it organically, pasture it, and don't use corn based citric acid when processing it. We have to buy in bulk, so we have a chest freezer to store it in.
  23. Have you tried keeping a food journal? That might help you find a pattern. Soy is a common culprit, have you looked into that? It's also possible that you are getting contamination you are not currently aware of. Since you are confident that's not it, I'm assuming you have done all the basics like having your own pans, utensils, kitchen appliances, cutting...
  24. For my son: Age diagnosed: 10 Time Gluten-Free: 11 months Time on GAPS: 8 months Percent recovered: 100%
  25. I'm not super sensitive to lactose, but I've made the connection that any dairy except very aged cheese and homemade yogurt gives me diarrhea. I typically get it about 12 hours later, and then get gas that continues for at least two days. I also get terrible bad breath pretty much right away, and body odor the next day. Continued exposure gives me dandruff...
