  1. The anger is justified. Not only did those people screw up your health, you also need to grieve what was lost. Living with anger indefinitely will not serve you well, but experiencing it as a part if your grief, then channeling it into positive action could actually help you heal and help spare others the trauma and health issues you experienced.
  2. I think your own kid's favorites are the best place to start.
  3. You've taken a really important first step to getting better which is admitting there is a problem. It sounds like there is a lot more going on than "just" cravings (though those are powerful and Takala's post is a good guideline to getting to a point where they won't be so overwhelming any more). It sounds to me like you need some good support in real...
  4. Weird, I thought I'd responded but my post isn't here. I'll try again. There is a wide range of people's responses to gluten. The post I mentioned was written with someone with autoimmune responses in mind. Some people really do seem to be fine with small amounts of contamination. Other people feel some improvement but hit a plateau and never really...
  5. Coconut oil has a high smoke point, can you get it?
  6. Do you eat any other meats? My partner made us beef jerky in the food dehydrator and it was great! You can make salmon jerky. Recently we found wild caught salmon in on the go aseptic packs at the REI with no added ingredients, so you might have luck with that. We don't do any grains, but when we did I liked how buckwheat did in biscuits and crusts. Maybe...
  7. I'd think whether they lose their job would be up to the manager, and whether the facility loses a license is up to the government. One report probably wouldnt do it. But complaints are important because the next time someone complains there will be a history which will make it be taken more seriously.
  8. You might also look into the GAPS diet (Gut and Psychology Syndrome). I have a resource page on the same blog mentioned above. It is all about the connection between gut health and mental/emotional issues.
  9. Before you go gluten-free you should note that by doing so you eliminate your ability to get test results without going back on gluten for a long time, in high doses. It might make more sense to get a celiac panel done before your gluten-free test. When you do really go gluten-free, you won't necessarily feel the difference if you don't actually eliminate...
  10. Great post! There are diets which fight candida and restore the balance of flora in the body, too. We do GAPS, which is based on the specific carbohydrate diet.
  11. I was into whole organic homecooked foods all along. I was a normal wright but bigger than I'd been when younger. When we started gaps, eliminating all grains and starchy veg, I immediately lost the extra 20lbs and it has stayed off. I'm now the size I was before having kids.
  12. I have had lots of dreams about it. Last night I dreamed that I ate a huge piece of bread and broke out in a horrible rash!
  13. I want to add that even if the school he is at now seems very accommodating without a doctor's note, there will be so many more teachers and administrators to deal with down the line who may not be! If you have the ability to get a good dr note in the file now, it will serve your son for the next 12 years at least. If he chooses to go to college, many of...
  14. You made me smile I wasn't always this way... my exhusband was vegan and I was a vegetarian on and off for a long time. I'm going to have to get my partner to write a proper blog post answering all these questions (blog linked from my profile) since she's the one who actually renders the fats and she's done more of the research, but here's a bit of info...
  15. I think the top loading ones are a bit better, but you are still taking a risk because the staff fill them up. I've seen staff take a scoop from granola and then use it to put almonds in an overhead bulk bin.
  16. We buy farm direct and organic, too, but that doesn't mean the farmer and local staff didn't somehow cross-contaminate the produce. I think good washing is the best protection, because you just never know. I don't know about you, but I've often seen farm stand workers sitting there with a sandwich. I used to work at a farmer's market and there was definitely...
  17. We avoid all grains, but not because they have gluten. My son is allergic to corn. We also experienced what was either cross contamination or cross-reactivity with some other alternative grains. For example, buckwheat, which is not actually a grain at all, gave my son and me the exact same symptoms as gluten. Research led us to the GAPS diet which eliminates...
  18. PS, Neal, you might want to look into the GAPS diet. It is aimed at restoring gut health, flora and all. I have posted a lot about it if you want to search the forum, or you can search for GAPS Resources at the blog linked from my profile. (Sorry, not up for more typing/link finding right now!)
  19. If your son is gluten-free, just packing a lunch for him will not be good enough at school. He'll need more accommodations than that, like actual handwashing in the classroom, careful screening of craft supplies, wiped down tables, special treats on party days, etc. My son does not have an official diagnosis. We went gluten-free before learning all about...
  20. Yogurt from raw milk, liberal amount of olive oil (don't heat it), coconut milk, avacado, eggs, nuts (washed, soaked, and dehydrated), pasture fed, organic meat with all the fat. Cook with tallow rendered from pasture fed organic beef (CAFO fat and meat is bad for you!!!), lard from pastured organic pork, duck fat (roast your duck and collect all the drippings...
  21. I am much better by I do still struggle. Today I am actually pretty down. The difference is it isn't completely crippling, though right now I'm having a hard time facing the day. I don't have the hopelessness, I know it will pass. It does take a commitment to tell if you are improving. The patterns in mood problems traverse long spans of time. And when...
  22. My son doesn't get it in his hands, but does get pain in joints, bones and muscles. I'd believe him about the pain. Does typing hurt his hands, too? It's fine to make accommodations for him - does typing hurt his hands as much? If so, how about answering homework questions verbally? When the pain is sorted out he'll catch up. My son was 10 and could barely...
  23. Do like they said and also make sure that she washes up before and after eating, brushes teeth really well before you kiss her, etc. To give you an idea of the kinds of contamination to look out for and prevent, you may want to read the Going 100% Gluten-Free post I made on the blog linked from my profile. Not everyone has to have a dedicated gluten-free...
  24. I am undiagnosed but definitely fit the diagnostic criteria for Bipolar (major manic episode with hallucinations and multiple major depressive episodes many years ago, and most of my life rapid cycling between hypomania and depression and experiencing many mixed states.) I consider myself very lucky because over the years I did manage to enjoy mental health...
