Business Development, motorcycles, dogs, reading, camping, bike riding, hiking.<br /><br />I have been involved with business development for the past 15 yrs. I had to dissolve my business of 5 years due to my diagnosis with celiac disease. You see I was making gourmet dog biscuits and we used whole wheat flour and oats. There were too many things for me to learn about my disease so I sold the business to my partner. Subsequently, my husband and I have become owners of numerous multifamily dwellings. We also have an energy drink business that is promising! Ck out our website.

  1. Wow Ursa!!! :o

I started a new herb for my Lyme .... it's also causing more parasites to come out .... even after two rounds of Humaworm!

I also felt very bad the second time around on the Humaworm. Sorry it's making you feel so rotten. :(

Paula, it's probably good to remove one stressor at a time .... first the mold, then the parasites. :)

Carla, Can you elaborate a little concerning the benefits you felt after the first liver cleanse. Obviously it was worth your wild if you did it again. Everyone mentions feeling awful. Can you function at your job during this 30 days? Take care of day to day living. Running errands, socializing? Thinking clearly?

    Thanks for your input!

    Debbie

  2. I am planning my daughters graduation party this may and want to serve cake. I never serve gluten. my family is always amazed how I come up with such good food and there is no gluten. I love showing them this life syle is not that bad. So I ask my fellow celiacs. What cake mixes do you like? I haven't experimented much because I am always watching my weight. I have tried Bob's and Pamala's. Both are alright. I guess I prefer Pamala's. Can you weigh in or even suggest a new brand. I am looking for the ever elusive "light and fluffy".

Also, it has to be a mix because my sister in law is going to make it. I wouldn't want to ask her to buy several different types of flour for this one event.

Thanks everyone! I know I can count on you.

    Debbie

PS Anyone want to throw in some main dish ideas, that's ok. I am doing this picnic style. Right now the plan is roasted chicken. But I am totally open.

  3. I actually did not have celiac disease. I was gluten intolerant. I have, however, been back on gluten now since last August and am doing fine. :)

It's not because of the Humaworm though that my gluten intolerance went away, the Lyme Disease seems to be the culprit causing the gluten intolerance. I have very severe GI symptoms from the Lyme, which go away with treatment. That's why Lyme can sometimes "look" like celiac. Lyme is referred to as the new "great imitator" because of it's ability to mimic other diseases.

Wow, good for you! Thanks for your responce. I still think I will try the Humaworm. It doesn't look like it could hurt. Worst case senerio I may feel better. ;)

  4. This is true. It worked great for me.

I no longer have any food intolerances at all. Part of it is because of Humaworm, part is because of Bartonella treatment (coinfection of Lyme Disease).

I waited 90 days and did a second round. I am almost finished with the second round.

Carla, now that you have done this twice. Have you tested your sensitivity to gluten? A lot of the symptoms of parasite infestation are the same as my celiac symptoms. Has deworming been helpful with your celiac?

  5. I need help. What brand name mascaras are gluten free? I look like quite the dork reading labels in the store and comparing them to my many pages of ingredients containing gluten. Also, does anyone know if Herbal Essences "Body Envy" shampoo is gluten free-the ingredients "seem" ok but I would like a 2nd opinion--thanks!

I use Lorelle waterproof mascara. It has been fine for the past several years. I purchase a shampoo and conditioner from my hair salon that states on the labeling that it is Gluten Free. YEA!!!

  6. Thanks for your replies! I always learn so much when I come here.

The dermatologist did a "general" biopsy back in Aug/Sep and isn't interested in doing a specific one. He scrapes the rash about every other visit and looks under the microscope and just tells me he doesn't see anything there. He is a resident and always has to call in a more senior dr to look- and they have all said one of the following: dry skin, nonspecific dermatitis, fungal, inflamed hair follicles. This has been going on for over a year!

At my next appt I am going to demand a biopsy for dh- which they keep telling me I can't have because I have not been diagnosed with celiacs (which I haven't been tested for even though I have many of the symptoms).

I've been on 20 different meds for this since it started and nothing helped so I don't understand why they won't listen to me. Talk about frustrating!

    Thanks again!

    Jeannine

Jeannine, darlin, you need a different dermitologist. A whole year with this rash is maddening!! A resident is only practicing medicine. The physician who supervises that resident may feel you need a biopsy but he wants his resident to make the call. A learning tool if you will. So you are a human learning tool and this resident hasn't learned his lesson. In the meantime you are miserable. Again I say. Find a different dermatologist. One without residents. Let them learn on someone else.

  7. I have a non-diagnosed rash that I sincerely believe to be dh. It is on both my lower legs, both hips, both sides of my waist. I have gone gluten-free (for a few weeks) and have not really noticed that much of an improvment (I, however, no longer wake up scratching in the middle of the night). A couple of nights ago we ate out, and though I tried to be careful I think maybe I was glutened. I have broken out in yet another spot- my elbow crease up to the middle of my upper arm- but only one arm!

Would this rule out dh? It burned before the rash broke out and now it itches and burns like crazy (like all of the other areas).

    Thanks!

Although my dermatologist tells me DH only breaks out on the knees and elbows I find I break out anywhere and everywhere. There is no rhyme or reason (other than gluten of course). Each break out lasts approx. 6 months in different degrees of severity. Going gluten free after a break out helps but not immediatly. Like I said before, about 6 week duration.

I currently take probiotics and a couple of other herbs and do colonics to decrease severity of DH. This seems to be helping.

Oh, and your original question, no DH does not have to mirror itself. It has a mind of its own and will pop up and suprise you in the most unusual places!!!

  8. Hi everyone. I am new to the boards and pretty new to the gluten free diet (gluten free since 10/07). The one thing I miss so much is a good loaf of Italian bread- the bread that is crunchy and chewy. Not this gluten free bread. Has anyone found any gluten free bread that resembles Italian bread? Thanks for your help.

    Jen

Gluten Free pantry has a Bread/Pizza mix that is like french bead. Not exactly Italian but it is actually good. Let us know if you find a good Italian. (Bread that is, HE!HE!)

  9. never had this before but am looking for something to eat for breakfast post-gym. never cooked or tasted it!

any good recipes/recomendations on how to cook it?

when i look for ideas it seems its a dinner thing. is it?

I haven't experimented with Quinoa much but I do cook it like oat meal and eat it with honey and milk like oatmeal. I think it has a similar texture and taste. It is very filling and sticks with you.

Good luck with it and I will look forward to hearing what others do with it.

    Debbie

  10. Well, I am one who must be careful now. I used to be able to drink all night long and get up and go in the morning. Beer was my beverage of choice followed by wine then Vodka. Now of course beer is out of the question. Wine if I am careful I can still drink. But Vodka made with grain, WhooWee! Have I gotten drunk quick and gotten mean! I was never a mean drunk. I don't touch it now. Rum and Gin have become my friend if I am careful with them. Thanks to everyone who is sharing. I thought I was just getting old, and I can not have any of that!!! B)

  11. My 2 year old son told my husband that he wanted to buy me chocolates for Christmas. Isn't that sweet!!!! This is the first gift that my son picked out. My husband took him to the mall and they got me a beautiful box of Godiva truffles. Well- my husband read the box 5 times to me sure and nothing looked like it contained gluten. I am proud that he worked so hard to make sure it was okay. Well- He brought it home to me and my son was so excited he couldn
  12. Hello All,

It has been quite a while since I have posted on here but I need your wisdom again! My hair has been slowly falling out for over a year now but I figured it would stop when I started my gluten-free Diet. Well, it still has not stopped & it is starting to reach noticable levels. Now I don't have celiac I have wheat allergies. I have also switched to all Allergen-Free Bedding (or @ least it says it is) so I am pretty sure that is not the problem. Here is a list of all the products I currently use. Please feel free to make ANY comments or suggestions!!!!

    Kerastase Chroma Reflect Shampoo

Kerastase Chroma Reflect Thin Hair Mask

    Kerastase Chroma Reflect Protect Cream

    Matrix Amplify Mousse

I have had the same problem. I checked all my products. they did not say Gluten Free but they do not mention any known gluten. Had my throid tested and I am a "low normal". No treatment. Stopped coloring my hair. Still no relief. Then I went to my herbalist and we are treating for stress. This seems to be helping. Also, about 2 months ago my stylist told me they now carried a Gluten Free product. And it actually says "gluten free" on it. So I buy all of that line now. Not worth the risk when I can have something that is willing to promise gluten-free. This product is made specifically for the salon so I don't know where you can buy it. If you would like to call them I can get their phone number. My hair still falls out a little but I am not afraid of being bald. I attribute this to both my herbalist and my new hair products. Good Luck and I hope you find your answeres here.

  13. I am a dentist and I ended up on this website because I was doing some research on Celiac disease after one of my patients told me that she has it. We do a thorough medical history and I take every chart very seriously. I research their meds to identify possible interactions with the anesthetics that we use or with meds that I commonly prescribe.

The reason why I am telling you this, is because if your dentist is not spending the time (which you probably already paid for during your new patient exam, or during your hygiene recall exam) to learn about your condition and your needs, then you need to look for another dentist.

I personally don't get offended if a patient asks me about a condition that I am not familiar with or a product that I haven't come across yet! I take that as an opportunity to educate myself and also provide a service to my patients.

this is my second time gathering information on Celiac disease. There's so much iformation and it is hard to digest all at once. But I can tell you from what I've read so far, the "scientific jury" is still out on whether or not Celiac disease is the direct casue of enamel hypoplasia. However, to me it is only common sense that an undiagnosed Celiac patient would end up with enamel defects. Very simply, if you're undiagnosed by the age of 8 yrs old, you'll most definitely have vitamin K, calcium and phosphate deficiencies, which translate into less Hydroxylapatite (Ca5(PO4)3(OH)) = the building block of enamel.

by the age of 8 months, 90% of baby teeth have their crowns (the part outside the gums) formed= babies breast-fed for 1 year are protected against damage to their primary teeth.

by the age of 8 years, 90% of adult teeth have their crowns formed = enough time to cause permanent damage to teeth before they even errupt.

I hope this answers some of your questions.

    Regards,

    Dr. S.

Dr. S. Thanks for posting. It is good to know there are doctors out there who will take the extra time to learn about this disease. I would give anything to have a dentist like you. If you post where your practice is I bet you could become a Celiac Dental Specialist! HA! HA! We would all be waiting in line to see you.

  14. I guess I should post this one for Lisa!!!!! Another new beer is making its way into the gluten-free arena....This is the third beer in less than a week....

It is called"nubru", made from maltose corn syrup, pea, lentil or bean extract..... This one is a Canadian brew from Canadian Malting Barley Tech Centre from Winnepeg.

I don't know about anyone else but the name of the company scares me away from ever trying it...

    mamaw

I am glad there are companies out there trying their hand at gluten free beer! Some resturants are now carrying gluten-free beer! I am so excited! So what are the other 2 new beers on the market? I am always game to try anything once.

  15. We usually go to CIP once a week after my DD's ice skating class. I usually have a glass of red wine, but have been asking them to get Red Bridge. Well, they did!! So I was now able to enjoy an ice cold beer with my cheeseburger & fries!! YUM!!!!

Not sure if all CIP are going to carry it, but the one we go to is in Columbus, OH on Sancus Blvd.

YEA!!! i just love RedBridge! I didn't know I could get fries at CIP. I have been to the one in Hilliard. Does the one on Sancus have a guitar player singing all of the beachy songs? The music was always my reason for going. The food is not my cup of tea, that is unless I can really get FRIES!!! I hate cooking my own. Thanks for the post.

  16. How exceptional that casual acquaintances give some of you gifts. I have never had someone like that offer me a gift. The people I have received gifts from are usually people who know and love me. Casual aquaintances usually bring gifts like that to the whole office for which I would never say a word. I never complain about all of the wonderful office lunches that sales reps bring from the best Italian resturants in town that I can not eat. I never fuss about all of the pot lucks where I can not eat all of the wonderful food my co-workers make.

I am not advocating not being gracious. I am not advocating being rude. I am advocating teaching those in our small circles who love us the most and really wouldn't want to hurt us. I have a hard enough time with close family members who think "a little gluten" won't kill you. Imagin what people think who are removed from me in any manner. If you or your child had a peanut allergy would you even want to touch a gift that contained peanuts? Would you accept a gun as a gift? Would you accept drugs? I know that no one would actually offer either of these two things as a gift, but, would you accept such dangerous things in the name of graciousness?

I appreciate everyones opinion for accepting a gluten gift. Do as you choose. I just want to let folks know that there are those of us who do not accept gluten gifts and we are Okay! We are not awful ungracious people.

As for me and my family, our responce will remain, "how generous of you. You certainly put a lot of work into those beautiful cookies. I am so dissapointed that I can not accept them. My family has an allergy to the flour used to bake them and we would get deathly ill from just the smallest taste."

  17. I am certainly gracious when someone gives me anything, however, I do not accept gluten type gifts. It gives the wrong message if I regift it. I use the opportunity to teach. How will anyone ever understand food allergies if we passively sit back and accept the poison we are offered? I am not the Grinch but I just can't accept something that could hurt me.

Besides, what if the giver asks you how you liked their gift? Then if you tell them the truth you have hurt their feelings anyway. Better to be upfront.

  18. ravenwoodglass and Momma Goose, Thanks for the suggestions. I can eat ice cream and other milk products without any reaction so although milk could be the culprit, I am just going to avoid the soup and stay blinded to anymore allergies. Same with soy. If it is the culprit I don't want to know. I just can't face eliminating anything else from my diet. There are not other soy products that have bothered me. I eat soybeans frequently without problems. However, I will let this rattle around in my brain for further use. If I have other reactions I will know where to look.

    Thanks again.

  19. ARE YOU SERIOUS! Maybe it wasn't the Bacardi... the recipe calls for cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, butter and brown sugar.

So far I have been gluten free for 2 months today (applause) and I have been having no troubles with lactose as of yet... ya think maybe it was the butter?

LOL I don't think when Celiac is concerned there is ever TMI! B):D

    lovelove

    sickchick

Are all of your spices new. Anything you used before being gluten free should be thrown out. To much chance for CC. Also, and this is a big one. What about your pans? Did you bake gluten in them before? Last christmas I replace EVERYTHING! Rolling pins, muffin tins, bread pans.... I had to use some tin foil ones for a while because the process was expensive. But I am safe and that is all that matters.

Good Luck. I think if make these alterations you should be able to do your butter rum cake. Then maybe you could share your recipie. Like what kind of flour did you use? Thanks!

  20. My daughter so wanted clam chowder today. I have read on here that Progresso will clearly list any source of gluten, so I picked up a can of Traditional New England Clam Chowder. Everything looked ok, but I have found several posts that say that the chunky is ok but the traditional is a no no. I tried calling Progress, but they are out for the weekend. Does anyone have a list of which soups are gluten free? Thanks!

I was so excited to read the label of the Progresso clam chowder and mushroom soup. I bought 2 cans of each. I started with the clam chowder. I got pretty sick. I thought, "well, not everything is related to celiac disease" so a couple of weeks later I tried the mushroom soup. Sick again. I am thinking there is some CC. I am done with Progresso. My advise is to make your own. Good luck!

  21. OH MY!!! I am sooo sorry to hear you have had such a horrible experience with Chipolte! I live in Ohio and this is my absolute favorite resturant! They are so accomodating. I have NEVER been cross contaminated.

In the beginning I had a very difficult time communicating with the employees also. I do not speak spanish and everyone in all of the stores (except the manager) speak spanish. But then I learned, I ask for the manager first thing. Then he communicates with the staff. The whole line stops what they are doing and everyone removes thier gloves, washes their hands and puts on new gloves!!!! Even at lunch/dinner rush! Wow! they are great. I go there so often I do not need the manager anymore. I say , "Would you mind changing your gloves, I am allergic to the flour tortilla's you are serving." That's it. The server stops what they are doing and changes gloves, grabs a bowl (I don't bother with toco's, too risky) and we begin. I do avoid the cheese and the lettus for the very reasons you mentioned. Cross Contamination. But I eat anything else I want.

I am super sensitive to CC. And now that they know what to do when I ask for the glove change I have never been CC. If everyone on the line does not change their gloves, the first person prepairs my entire bowl.

So, go out there and find a good manager and train them. It is so worth it!!! I also ALWAYS leave a generous tip. I make sure they see me do it too. Want them to know they are appreciated.

    Good Luck!!!

  22. Well, it's 2am and I'm up with bad D and the typical glutened symptoms. This one is weird though, I was in Chicago over the weekend and had no appetite so I ate VERY little, fresh fruit, cheetos, Mt Dew, a Wendy's frosty, and a Mrs. Leepers dinner leftover when I got home. These are all staple foods for me and so not out of the ordinary at all, yet I still have glutened symptoms. Granted I could just have a bug or be exhausted from a strenuous weekend and little food, but then I really started to go over everything that I ate.

Well, this morning in the hotel I went down to check out the continental breakfast--you know the type, where there is nothing I can eat. I opted just to have juice. It was apple juice and came in those little one cup containers with the peel-back foil lid. This was the only thing out of the ordinary for my diet in several days. Is it possible that the glue used to hold the foil to the cup is a wheat paste similar to what is on envelopes? Seems a little far fetched, but I suppose it could happen. I would assume that it is corn based perhaps, but does anyone know for sure? I eat little cups of applesauce all the time with no problem and they are packaged in a similar manner.

Last week I had a similar experience. I wondered about the glue on the juice also. I guess we cant rule anything out. I will however avoid pealing the lid back on those juice cups for a while. Anyone out there with a similar experience?

  23. Hi, everyone! I've been gluten-free (and soy free, casien free and glutamate free) since this summer and feeling quite a bit better. However, I'm still having some issues and occasional "glutenings" (I think). I try to be extremely careful about cc, but I'm sure there's still some - I'm the only one keeping this diet right now, but I have a DH, and three kids (8, 5 & 2). They're not very mindful of their messes and crumbs get everywhere. After being glutened again the other day, I snapped at DH a bit. To avoid further issues, he said he'll just stop having gluten-items at home (up to this point he's been very resistant to the idea & doesn't like gluten-free foods). Great, and I appreciate the offer, but is it practical? There's so much more gluten in the house than just the bread he mentioned. The kids, especially, have lots of snacks that have gluten and their breakfast on school days is almost always cereal.

Has anyone else implemented the diet for their whole family (especially young kids), when they didn't need to? Any advice? Is it even reasonable? How about financially do-able?

I already cook everything that I eat from scratch, but the rest of the family still has some convenience foods and ingredients that I just avoid.

Thanks for any input anyone can offer. This idea just seems so overwhelming, but would make life so much easier regarding cc.

I have had a gluten free environment early after I was diagnosed. I was cross contaminated so many times by things no one ever thought of. My family can eat gluten anytime they are not at home. I don't care about that. Only rule there is no lip kisses if you ate gluten that day. Yes I have been contaminated by kisses. There are plenty of convienience foods that are gluten free. It just takes time to find them. And financially you can do it. You just have to be creative. Good luck.
