IrishHeart replied to KikiB's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Honestly, if I could have one meal again (from "my other life") pre-DX...it would involve beef wellington and a pastry crust or something with phyllo dough. Because there is no way to re-create that--not that I have found anyway. But everything else can be done gluten-free, I promise you! We have an in-house chef who will help you : love2travel. ... -

or "piffle" for that matter ? arrgh!! on the "you know what I mean?" I have a relative who punctuates every sentence with this ---and my sister and I mouth to each other "no we don't" --because she never really says anything. No full sentences whatsoever. In 30 years, I still have no clue what this woman is talking about. and FWIW .... -

Me too... hmm.. "filled with ice water"? But the one that stumps me still is SIL -- is it son- in- law or sister- in -law? and DD--well, at first, I thought it was really, really bad Diarrhea--like "disastrous diarrhea". and when Sylvia says this to me : "Pffft!" it makes me laugh and I know she is really saying "Psshaw" or piffle... -

Maybe you guys could ask your local beer distributor to order it for you. They are pretty good about that. -

 I'll share that thought with the hubs. I have to say the Guinness I had in Ireland was just ridiculously creamy and delicious (and I don't even drink it as a rule) ...this was years ago, of course. -

The local beer distributor here happily orders it for us. See if your nearby one will for you too! -

My Irish Hubs, who views Guinness as "mother's milk"---says the Green's Dubble ale is close enough. (I do wonder if he lies about that so I do not feel guilty that he gave it up for me.) -

This the most descriptive explanation of a gluten challenge I have ever read. Glad you saw the thread and posted! Sorry you had to go through it but it does clarify the impact on the human body --for readers of this thread and for the OP and for me---as I know I could never withstand such a thing and was relieved my GI doc did not ask me to do it.... -
ARCHIVED Myths About Gluten In Everyday Non Edible Objects?
IrishHeart replied to irish daveyboy's topic in Super Sensitive People
Agree. When I say "glutening"--I mean I am really sick, living in the potty, anxious, sleepless, having those "brain frogs" return (still loving that phrase Linda created) with migraines and having major joint/ muscle/ bone pain, burning nerves for two weeks--and feeling like I want to strangle the waiter who failed to handle my order with care. -
ARCHIVED Celiac's & Pathology Of Crohn's?
IrishHeart replied to kelly97's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My friend and one cousin also suffer from MS, so I know the battle you deal with on a daily basis. I should tell you that my friend went grain free, sugar free 25 years ago (long before any of us heard the words "gluten free") and she has managed to avoid a wheelchair and even ran the Boston Marathon a few years back. She is truly inspiring. My cousin has... -
ARCHIVED Myths About Gluten In Everyday Non Edible Objects?
IrishHeart replied to irish daveyboy's topic in Super Sensitive People
I think it very possible for any of us to have a wheat allergy in addition to celiac which would cause many skin irritations, sneezing, headches, etc. When I went to the dermatologist with open, oozy, itchy sores on my face and scalp (and I no longer have these unless I am glutened by accidentally ingesting it when trusting a "gluten-free" product or... -

This is pretty much how I choose "beauty" products as well. Lipstick --and sunscreen or something I may perspire through and have it run in my mouth-- are my main concerns as well. -
ARCHIVED Myths About Gluten In Everyday Non Edible Objects?
IrishHeart replied to irish daveyboy's topic in Super Sensitive People
This is incorrect, actually, sorry. DH is not triggered by topical gluten-containing products. It is triggered by the autoimmune response from digesting gluten. Dr. Green's book Celiac Disease:The Hidden Epidemic: "DH is very erratic. Since the skin may not be rid of IgA deposits for more than 2 years after starting a gluten-free diet, flare... -

ARCHIVED Started Eating Gluten Free Yesterday.

I agree with all that Raven has said. Get tested before you take gluten out of your diet. -
ARCHIVED New At This
IrishHeart replied to pullieq2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You said: Biopsy showed nothing. She told me to go gluten and lactose free and take an antibiotic called xifaxan. She scheduled a blood test, but I've been on the diet for 10 days already. I take the blood test tomorrow. It may be that your blood test will also be negative as a result. I do not know why a GI doctor would tell you stop etaing gluten... -
I could not drink at all while I was very ill for a few years, but now that I have healed, well....CHEERS! I will admit, however, that my days of 2 painfully dry martinis (and by that, I mean absolutely no vermouth at all) are over. I've turned into a wimp. I am also a lot smaller than I used to be, so maybe that's part of it. In any case, a small...

ARCHIVED Would You Pay For Genetic Testing At This Point?
IrishHeart replied to birdie22's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I do not see why she even cares one way or the other. You are paying the co-pay for the lab work and all she has to is sign the darn sheet. Geesh. It could be of value to your family. My doc included it in the first lab work he ran on me. I did not ask for it, he just did it. "Celiac disease (celiac disease) is a complex genetic disorder with...
