  1. I nearly cried the last time I saw her -- she knows someone with celiac, so she isn't stuck in the "skinny with D" diagnostic formula like most of the doctors I've talked to. She definitely gave me my quality of life back, I couldn't be more grateful. SO TRUE!! I don't know why any doctor would suggest NOT doing a gluten free diet, since so many...
  2. Don't get me started on doctors. I've been chasing them for years trying to get them to tell me what's wrong with me. My new mantra is that having an MD doesn't grant you common sense. I have literally been going from doctor to doctor for YEARS... I finally changed endocrinologists because my previous doctor tried to tell me my thyroid cancer wasn't metastatic...
  3. My doctor originally told me to go on the gluten free diet mostly to aid the absorption of my medicines, as well as vitamins and minerals. We know my vitamin D was not absorbing, nor was my synthroid. I've been hungry as long as I can remember. I would eat a meal, then force myself to wait for the next one--I knew I shouldn't have been hungry--but it was...
  4. I'm still waiting for the rest of my brain fog to clear. I used to read ALL the time, I was working my way down a long list of classic lit. I haven't been able to read in a year at least. My memory is still pretty bad, but improving--I don't know if I'll ever get those years of my life back, I couldn't have told you what I'd eaten for breakfast most days...
  5. It's always good to have answers, and by all means chase them--in the end though, if you try the diet and you feel better, that is the indicator you should ultimately respect. Your body knows better than any doctor what it does and does not want to process. They may never actually figure out all the ways our bodies can react negatively to things, but sometimes...
  6. Many, many of your symptoms match what mine were before I stopped eating gluten... my blood work was negative but I went gluten free anyway and the difference gets more and more pronounced every day. I had the same thing with the never feeling full, for the last three days I have been actually able to eat normal meals and haven't been totally miserable in...
  7. People do go through wheat withdrawal sometimes when they first go off gluten, but you might want to see a doctor to make sure you don't have a UTI, those can get worse and be really painful, not to mention it's dangerous not to treat them. My withdrawal symptom was panic attacks, it took me about a week to start to feel better after I stopped eating wheat...
  8. Considering the complexities of the human body and the things it is expected to break down, it isn't surprising. The problem occurs when people assume that they know everything, and that if they can't quantify it, it doesn't exist. I'm glad to see that some people are trying to break through the barriers that previous theories have put up in so many...
  9. Welcome to the gluten free world Many of us know we have a problem and have had to float around in the purgatory of "non-diagnosed" (whatever-your-current-doctor-thinks-it-might-be), and then go gluten free based on a hunch... whether it's diagnosed or not, it's great to feel better, and good for you for not losing heart!! I hope you continue to feel...
  10. I am grateful that my mom finally gets to have a healthy kid, after so many years of heartache and worry, for all the support that my family, friends, and all of you on the forum have given me. I am grateful for my doctor, who was the first one to direct me to the idea of gluten intolerance after so many years of nobody understanding -- and grateful that...
  11. My blood work was normal... I don't care. I feel so much better already, and I have too many symptoms in common with celiacs/gluten intolerant people to be coincidental. You know what's best for your body, just because the science can't "prove" it yet doesn't mean you can't keep doing what you need to do to feel better. You're the best judge of what's...
  12. The way to officially "diagnose" celiacs is with blood work and/or a biopsy, lots of people who post on this forum (including me) couldn't get an official diagnosis. I just know I feel 100% better almost as soon as I cut gluten out of my life, so whether I'm "celiacs" or "gluten intolerant" doesn't matter, I just know I'm never eating wheat again if I can...
  13. Second on Udi's being good for bread I had a hard time my first week on the diet because I was cautious about anything that wasn't labeled "gluten free," until I figured out for sure which brands I was allowed to have. There are actually some products that you can have (Hebrew National hot dogs??) that seem pretty surprising, I have a smart phone so...
  14. Hi everyone I was just wondering what some of you all experience when you get glutened. I've been gluten free a month now, and I'm not sure if that's long enough to be able to tell when I've been contaminated, but I feel so much better now that I think it's likely I'll feel different if I eat gluten. Not sure how sensitive I am, either. Is there...
  15. I had migraines since 4th grade. I've been gluten free a month, I've only had one and was able to cure it with a single dose of excedrin, without even lying down, and it didn't come back later. I agree that re-introducing gluten free wheat *might* help you to know for sure, but pesticides and fertilizers and the other chemicals that are used by farmers...
  16. I was always really sensitive to being "borderline low." My docs would never put me on levo because they said it wasn't necessary... took them totally eliminating my thyroid when my TSH has to be below 1 to prevent re-growth for me to start feeling better. (Still not even there yet--doc just had to up my dose again since it seems to be hovering around ...
  17. I've been gluten free for a month and everyone keeps commenting that my skin looks amazing... I've had acne since I was twelve and I haven't had any more spots appear in the last two weeks or so. I never would have guessed that it would fix my acne along with everything else, but I'm certainly not complaining !!
  18. I have had digestive problems as long as I can remember, and I have been low thyroid for several years due to thyroid cancer. My medicine wasn't absorbing and it made me very sick. I am feeling better now due to a combination of my thyroid medicine being fixed (they had to put me on an extremely high dose to get it to the levels it should be, since it still...
  19. Thanks for the input, everyone. I've been on the diet for a month now, I still haven't seen my doctor again post-blood work so I haven't gotten to analyze it, but I'm feeling much more awake and "with it" now, so I'm staying on the diet regardless of what it says. It can only get better from here.
  20. Hi everyone. Sorry in advance for a long post... Basically, I'm one of those people with a really, really, really complicated medical history. I was born with a kidney deformity, got that taken care of. I've had problems with ADHD my whole life, had migraines since 4th grade, I don't remember ever NOT feeling sleepy (not quite narcoleptic but close...
  21. I'm one of those people who hasn't been formally diagnosed either Celiacs or Narcoleptic... I had very "abnormal" sleep studies (very close to narcolepsy diagnosis but was five minutes too slow at falling asleep,) so my insurance won't cover any prescription medicines to help. My doctor doesn't think it's worth putting me through a biopsy for celiacs even...
  22. Hi, I'm new to the gluten free diet, and I was wondering if anybody has experience with Penny Chocolates & Gelato in Fairfax, VA. It's a small business, so I doubt many have heard of it. The owner says there's really no reason there should be gluten in the gelato, aside from those with cookie pieces, etc. The gelato is made separately from the...
