ARCHIVED Anyone Else Sensitive To Caffeine?
color-me-confused replied to josh052980's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You can have my coffee when you pry it out of my cold, dead hands. I kept getting some reflux after drinking coffee and it finally dawned on me to stop using the company's supply of non-dairy creamer. It appears to be gluten free (from reading the label) but it does have soy. So, just some sugar in the coffee for me. I typically do a cup in the afternoons... -
ARCHIVED Is A Low-Gluten Diet Useful For An At-Risk Child?
color-me-confused posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Here's something I'm wondering about. They have not been diagnosed with celiac disease although no tests have been done. My wife recently had an upper GI, colonoscopy, and bloodwork done investigating an apparent case of IBS. Result: yes IBS, no to everything else. But my kids are still at higher risk for celiac due to my diagnosis and DQ8 gene. Since... -
ARCHIVED Reading My Pathology Report...
color-me-confused replied to color-me-confused's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I rarely take NSAIDs any more than one dose in a day, hardly more than once or twice a month for occasional back pain. I believe that intestinal damage from them is usually seen in people taking large quantities regularly for things like arthritis. I'm in the position of "if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck...", you know? I suppose the alternative... -
ARCHIVED Reading My Pathology Report...
color-me-confused posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
A doctor for one of my kids, upon hearing of my positive biopsy/negative bloodwork test results suggested I seek a 2nd opinion for the celiac diagnosis. I got ahold of my pathology report and it's interesting stuff. "intraepithelial lymphocytosis especially near the villious tips" which suggests treated or clinically latent celiac sprue, NSAID use, h. pylori... -

ARCHIVED I Need A Gluten Free House, I Think
color-me-confused posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've been glutened today while home in the house . I'm the only gluten-free eater in the house...I'm tired of cleaning up crumbs, wiping the fridge handle, etc. And now I'm sitting here with a raging migraine, reflux, and irritability knowing I somehow got glutened in the house even while preparing my own food. Any suggestion how to sit down with... -
ARCHIVED Why Would Rice Chex Make My Mouth Burn?
color-me-confused replied to kagm's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've found Rice Chex to be a rather abrasive cereal. It needs a good soaking in milk otherwise I find it's very tough on the tongue and inner cheeks. -
ARCHIVED Tennis Players Gluten Free .
color-me-confused replied to tennisman's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's hardly "wildly irresponsible". A major change in performance for a pro athlete is pretty unusual. If Djokovic is gluten intolerant, or has a wheat allergy, or is even a celiac than a gluten free diet could quite possibly make such a change. It's been tried in other sports. The Open Original Shared Link team has done an "anti-flammatory" diet (with... -
ARCHIVED Baked Mac & Cheese
color-me-confused replied to color-me-confused's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've managed a dinner, and two lunches out of the batch...and there's enough for breakfast tomorrow! Next time I make this (and it'll be soon!) I may have to try Open Original Shared Link. I'll do the same substitutions. -
Last night I took my favorite baked macaroni & cheese recipe and gluten-free'd it. It microwaves well for lunch @ work. Here is the original recipe: Open Original Shared Link My substitutions: wheat flour --> Open Original Shared Link wheat pasta --> Open Original Shared Link (the only gluten-free elbows I could find. I slightly undercooked...

ARCHIVED How Do You Clean Gluten
color-me-confused replied to Newtoitall's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Clorox wipes don't contain any bleach - it's basically some alcohol and quaternary ammonia, both effective antimicrobial compounds. I've been using their Green Works all-purpose cleaner (basically ethanol and some soap) which seems to work quite well. I bought a gallon of concentrate 2 years ago when we bought our house (from a group of smokers) and I reckon... -
It's just occurred to me that there's a statistic that something like 20% of ADD patients are unresponsive to medication...who knows, maybe someone out there is working on research on gastro-related ADD type symptoms?

ARCHIVED What's For Breakfast Today?
color-me-confused replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have a carbon steel omelette pan, cost ~$15. A little cooking spray and omelette fly off with no egg left behind. In the AM I'm whipping up a 3 egg omelette with artichoke hearts and sharp cheddar, followed by an apple and a Greek yogurt when I get to work. Yum! -
As someone with mostly inattentive-type ADD, I have this to say: the brain fog from gluten produces some of the poor working memory/distractibility/poor focus symptoms I get from the ADD. The difference: the gluten fog feels, well, like fog in my head. When I went gluten-free it was like returning to my normal ADD baseline - the gluten exposure had made...

ARCHIVED Rice Krispie Treat Report
color-me-confused replied to color-me-confused's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips

ARCHIVED Medications For Glutening?
color-me-confused replied to color-me-confused's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For the migraine pain I've got an Rx for Relpax. Now the plan is to not need any of these be being 100% gluten free!! -
ARCHIVED Headache From The Bread Aisle
color-me-confused replied to Missing Bread's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I steer clear of those sections to avoid getting very depressed for an hour or three. I flirt with dysthymia enough as it is, I don't need to torture myself! -
A few weeks ago my family tried some frozen chocolate croissants that you let rise overnight then bake in the morning. I happened to be in the kitchen when they were done and cut them in half to serve to our kids. Later I told my wife that I cannot do that again...it made me downright sad to handle something that looked and smelled so delicious.

ARCHIVED Rice Krispie Treat Report
color-me-confused posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I made a batch of Rice Krispie treats using the new gluten free RK cereal. I used Kraft Jet-Puffed marshmallows. The results are good. The gluten-free RK are a little less crispy and a little less sweet, made with brown rice & sugar, instead of white rice, malt, and sugar. My older son begrudgingly tried some and declared them to be "fine" ... -
ARCHIVED Odd Benefits Of Going Gluten Free
color-me-confused replied to Cattknap's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Funny, I'm getting bit more from mosquitoes! Normally they just, nibble, and fly away. I've got 2 bites so far this spring, which is 2 more than normal... Another plus: I swear my prematurely gray hair is picking up some color @ the temples. Might be a while before I can decide if it's a real trend or not. -
ARCHIVED Low Vitamin D And Bone Density
color-me-confused replied to color-me-confused's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks, I will check out the Citracal. I've been a big consumer of yogurt and to a lesser extent cheese for years, so hopefully with some added vit D that will absorb better. I was really surprised by this since I usually only sunscreen my hands, face, and top of feet (when in sandals) unless I'm at the beach, figuring my legs and arms would get me some... -
ARCHIVED Low Vitamin D And Bone Density
color-me-confused posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This was unexpected...my vitamin D levels tested low (15 ng/L). Also my hip had low bone density - certainly unusal in a mid 30's male. And to think I spent much of my 20's doing heavy weightlifting (think Olympic lifting, not bodybuilding). My many years of celiac-induced acid reflux with Prilosec use and lactose intolerance probably contributed to the... -
There's a pizza place near me that also has a separate area for gluten-free dough, a separate set of toppings, the pizzas are cooked on freshly washed pans, the cooks change their aprons, gloves, etc., and then the manager delivers it. It's worked well for me on two occasions...except for the $8 small pizza with a gluten-free upcharge of $6. Pricey, but...

ARCHIVED Medications For Glutening?
color-me-confused replied to color-me-confused's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks ladies! I spoke with my doc today and he's got me on a dose of Ativan to combat anxiety as it occurs and also to dampen down the irritability if I'm glutened. Next I'll tackle the migraine pain...also working on getting more exercise and I plan on doing some bike commuting later this week. I will look into the L-glutamine too. A search on that... -
I have been doing pretty well recently: I'm finding hidden gluten sources in the home (OTC meds...replaced $$$$), we're training the kids to clean up their crumbs from the table, wash their hands after eating, greater care with the stove and dirty dishes, etc to avoid making the kitchen a minefield of cross contamination. And then I made a trip to...
