  1. Thanks for your suggestion! I do have olive oil on grits every morning and on potatoes every night. Would that be enough?
  2. I have an electric hot pot that I use to cook corn pasta or red potatoes in. Can also use it to heat water for Starbucks instant coffee. It fits into a large tote bag I can carry on. Though security does usually check the bag once it goes through X-ray. Canned or vacuum-sealed-in-a-bag meat also works. Not terribly tasty, but goes over pasta OK.
  3. Help! I'm trying to figure out what's going on with my hair and how to fix it. Nutritional supplement or new hair products… It's gotten very frizzy and dry. My bangs haven't needed to be cut lately because the hairs seem to break off at the end! My hair stylist said that she heard people who go gluten free for awhile end up with this problem. I would think h...
  4. This is the only place I know where to ask this question without getting tarred and feathered by those who struggle with their weight!!! Due to my lovely multiple food intolerances and my high metabolism, I'm very slender. I haven't been able to find a swimsuit in my size, but I'm honestly not sure where to look. Tried Macy's, Academy Sports, Land's End...
  5. Sorry to have to tell you this, but 8-9 months. Stomach felt better after 2 months give or take, but I had to eliminate a LOT of foods to get there. Here's a link to a post I made at my one-year mark: I now feel better than I have in 20 years. I feel alive and energetic. I'm 43 and have been known to tire out my 30-something friends. As much as I hate...
  6. My worst food intolerance is to brown rice. It gives me severe stomach pain two days after eating it, and pain lasts for almost a week. Also causes major C. I can eat white rice every once in awhile, but I don't think it gets digested very well. I suggest trying it one more time to see. This is a tough intolerance to have since most gluten-free processed...
  7. I'm 43, have 4 kids, and wear a size 2 (0 at Gap). Lost about 15 pounds after going gluten free and figuring out my multiple food intolerances. I'd love to add a few pounds, but I honestly struggle to keep my weight where it is. Sometimes I wish I could post on FB "So excited! Gained a pound back! Only took a week this time instead of 2!" or "So frustrated...
  8. Thank you for posting this. Got some hard news last night. This journey I've been on has shown me I can handle it. Your post is very reassuring. I must say that picking up the pieces of our lives post-diagnosis isn't easy. I feel like I missed my 30's due to the effects gluten had on my brain and personality. Just gotta keep pushing on...
  9. I'm 43 and have been doing just this lately! Except watching Breaking Bad instead of Twilight. LOL! (My toenails are purple right now.) I feel 20 years younger - just like I did in college. I've also gotten the "you look younger" comments. And "you're so much more outgoing." And "your skin looks great!" It feels nice to hear all this even though I know...
  10. Thanks for the sympathy, y'all! I'll definitely try it again in several months. Still have hopes that dairy will come back one day! I eat/ate Fearless or Enjoy Life brand chocolate bars, both of which have very simple ingredients. So no soy lethicin. (Wish it were that!!! And thanks for the suggestion.) I saw this coming the last time I had...
  11. Et tu, chocolate? I've spent most of my life in daily, slavish devotion to you- only eating the most intensely rich versions of you I could find. True, my attention lessened this last year as I was getting my GI tract under control, but did you have to betray me by becoming a new food intolerance? It's bad enough that dairy, tomatoes, and most grains betrayed...
  12. Some people have problems with dairy after being gluten-free a little bit. I was able to tolerate it for awhile, but had to cut it completely out. My brown rice intolerance started out small and got really bad after a couple months gluten-free. (kind of an odd one, though) You may want to cut out the main culprits (dairy, soy, corn products) for a couple...
  13. I like these best: Open Original Shared Link There are also these: Open Original Shared Link Look at bottom of the page. The laminated ones are good for ethnic cuisines or travel to foreign countries.
  14. On gluten, I get hypoglycemic and STARVING. Shakes start a couple of hours after eating until I eat again. (The time interval shortened to 2 hours after being gluten-free for awhile. Wasn't this bad before going gluten-free.) Off gluten, I can go for much, much longer before I get shaky, irritable, etc. Write all your symptoms down so you don't forget,...
  15. Thanks for the input! I got my thyroid tested a few months ago when I was about 4lbs too low after a long overseas trip. It's fine. I had just done way too much on my trip. I keep forgetting about nuts! I have some pecans in the freezer I bought from Nutsonline. Think I'll go much a few before I have a late lunch.
  16. I dropped about 14lbs after going gluten-free and discovering that I also can't tolerant dairy or foods with lots of fructose. And brown rice - cuts out most gluten-free processed foods. Actually, I eat few processed foods due to food intolerances. I struggle to maintain the lowest weight I'm comfortable with. If I increase my activity (like on a trip...
  17. So true. Some days I'm not sure I have the stomach for it.
  18. My cystic acne I had been fighting for 27 years went away gluten free. (I had even done two rounds of Accutane.) I still get a couple tiny pimples during certain parts of my cycle, but they are minor. My dermatologist was impressed. My hair is thin, but I'm not sure if it's getting a touch thicker or if it's wishful thinking. My son's eczema hasn...
  19. I went through lightheadedness and dizziness right after going gluten-free, too. And extreme fatigue. It does get better. If it doesn't improve over a couple of weeks, then you should ask here again and consider looking further into it. At this point, I'd consider it withdrawal. Just FYI, if I get even the tiniest bit of gluten now, I get lightheaded...
  20. Just a multivitamin. I wasn't low in B12, which is a common culprit. (And my neurologist is one who will recommend supplementing if someone is on the low end of the normal range for B12.) There is evidence that the immune system will attack the nervous system directly, so not all nervous system problems for people with celiac are caused by malabsorption...
  21. My nerves get pinched easily. (Far, far less than before.) So before gluten free, I had carpal tunnel release surgery on both wrists. Yet the tingling came back, and it came back in my entire hand. I did a gluten challenge for 4 days after two months gluten free. My leg tingled from toes up to my rear end for a few days. Then, I was getting stabbing...
  22. I wrote this with my Facebook friends in mind. But realized it's WAAAAAAAY too long! So posting a slightly edited version here. And will have to figure out how to shorten it for FB. Second paragraph is all the improvements I never dreamed would happen. "Today I celebrate one year of being gluten free. No, I’m not celebrating my extremely restrictive d...
  23. You've gotten good advice. I'll add: do not go to the grocery store hungry. It makes things worse. Don't buy a million gluten-free substitutes (bread, pasta, etc) at first. Try a little bit at a time and find out what brands, alternative grains, etc you like. It'll save you money. Keep in mind that your tastebuds will adapt and gluten-free substitutes...
  24. We snack on the sofa, so I had a helper vacuum every inch of it. And wiped down the remote control. We also detailed my car (kids eat in it). Took whole house gluten-free two months after I went gluten-free. I asked a friend to help me clean out my kitchen, and she handled the gluten food. I still got glutened. Probably from flour poofing from the...
