  1. Thanks guys for the help. I will think about the frozen meals. I just worry that it would take up a large section of their freezer, given that it is two kids and 6 nights. I plan to prepack all thier lunch and snacks. And they always have gluten-free cereal or toast for breakfast. I am sending a toaster clearly labeled for gluten free bread...
  2. The photo thing is a good idea. I haven't actually talked to the kitchen staff yet. They aren't there yet and the camp is a few hours from home. It is owned by our city in Central California, but the camp is on the coast. My kids are in the third session, so I figured I will find out when is a good time for us to visit during one of the first two...
  3. I once got half a bee in my salad at a resaurant. I was a little freaked out because I had eaten half the salad before I found it and I wondered where the other half of the bee was! It turned me off of salad for a while. God bless, Mariann
  4. My kids are going to summer camp for a week at the end of July. This is their first time away at camp, and I am trying to do my best to prepare them and the camp staff for their stay. I typed up a two page cover letter explaining their food issues, and 4 pages of lists of safe and not safe foods! And that doesn't even cover all of what the camp staff needs...
  5. I don't use one, but I do think it is a good idea. I just haven't found one that adequately describes all of my dietary needs. My kids and I are gluten free and dairy free, and two of us avoid soy. The small cards I've found just don't have enough info on them for me to feel comfortable that it is going to help keep my food safe. I don't eat out much...
  6. Hi Molly, I wish I could help, but I haven't figured it out either. Can someone who has figured it out please help us!! Thanks in advance. And DETAILED instructions please. God bless, Mariann
  7. I suppose we will know by trying dairy again and seeing if we have problems. I planned on waiting at least 6 months to a year. If we do fine on dairy, then after a few months, getting the test done again to make sure we are not producing antibodies to milk. I'll probably do that when we retest for gluten antibodies. Being gluten free is easy, compared...
  8. Hi Molly, I was wondering how you were doing? I had my tonsils out when I was 15 and it hurt a lot. Now they like you to be on pain meds. since they realise you heal better and faster when you are not in too much pain! I wish they did that then. My daughter goes in in three weeks for her surgery. She is only 5 though, and it is easier when you are...
  9. Kalo (Carol B.), Enterolabs milk sensitivity test is for milk protein. Lactose is a milk sugar. I've been told by my childrens GI that we should outgrow the milk sensitivity. I hope so. I miss cheese terribly, so does my daughter, and my kids would like some regular ice cream! There are just so many more gluten-free foods we could eat, but currently...
  10. From what I've read, the reticulin test is almost never used anymore. Either the TTG or the EMA (Anti-Endomysial Antibody) is used, and in combination with the IgA & IgG Gliadin tests it gives them a good idea of whether or not to test further with the endoscopy and or gene tests. The reticulin is sometimes included in a Celiac panel of tests, but I...
  11. When a person is gluten intolerant and continues to eat gluten, they sometimes don't notice symptoms. When they go gluten-free they start to notice symptoms, partly I think because their bodies are healing, and partly because you may have other intolerances to different foods that weren't noticable since your body was spending so much energy fighting gluten...
  12. (from MedicalNewsToday.com) *Note: This article was writed for the UK, but most of the information applies universally. Foods that cause allergy 24 May 2004 In theory, any food can cause a food allergy. But in fact just a handful of foods are to blame for 90% of allergic reactions to food. These foods are known as the
  13. Did you e-mail Dr. Fine or Enterolab. If you e-mailed the lab dierectly they almost never respond, but if you e-mail Dr. Fine directly at kdxfine@yahoo.com , he will get back to you right away. Two of my boys do not have the celiac genes (like my daughter and I do), but their doctor is not willing to rule out Celiac Disease. I was told their is just...
  14. Mine came in the mail, and then you send it back in the pre-paid Airbourne Express pack. It can take up to a week to get the kit, but it is usually about 3-4 days. Just curious what test was negative? All my bloodtests were negative, but positives on the stool and gene tests through Enterolab. Was it the TTG, EMA, the IgA Gliadin or the IgG Gliadin...
  15. I can't get them to order them at my local Whole Foods, but I've tried... Wellshire Farms is not currently taking internet orders either! So I have pretty much given up on finding them right now. I figure when I go on vacation maybe I'll find them...Glad to know that at least some people have been able to find them and that they like them. God bless...
  16. Your best bet would be to just get her off gluten 100%. Does it really matter if the doctors don't recognise that gluten is her "trigger"? Both my boys were diagnosed with asthma at least a year before finding out they were gluten intolerant. I don't know if gluten was the cause of their asthma, but I have that book that Taneil mentioned "Dangerous Grains...
  17. Open Original Shared Link I found the info at the above listed site. It sounded sort of crazy at first, but I figured it wouldn't hurt me and if it helped that would be great. I went the extra step and made sure I didn't bend over for a few days to allow the opening where the hernia was protruding to close. It worked for me. So who knows... As...
  18. In addition to the letter from the doctor stating that he needs to be on the gluten-free diet for at least one year (it can be updated next year if he needs to stay on it), you should also include a letter stating what a gluten free diet entails. Lists of foods and ingredients your son cannot have, and lists of foods he can have. Also included should be...
  19. I also had a negative biopsy, and a slight hiatal hernia. Since going gluten-free my hiatal hernia has gone away. I don't know if it is usually caused by gluten, but I suspect in my case it was. I did not have a hernia with the previous endoscopy( without biopsies) a year earlier. I had been gluten-free before for a period of time and had to go back on...
  20. A gluten free diet can be quite healthy. It certainly wouldn't hurt you to continue eating gluten free, but if you want to be tested for Celiac Disease later then you need to realise that you will have to go back on gluten for anywhere from 4 weeks to a year (or more) to get enough damage done to produce positive levels of antibodies. Have you checked...
  21. Have you and your doctor conscidered gene testing? Both the dark circles and the mucousy stool could be caused by celiac disease. Also, ulcerative colitis and celiac disease can be caused by the same genes. It would be worth looking into. It doesn't sound like he is ruling out celiac disease, but it sure is hard to sit back and wait for more testing...
  22. The gumballs might be safe, you would need to check with the manufacturer. My kids sometimes eat the gumballs from the big machines and have never had a problem. God bless, Mariann
  23. Gum base is on the avoid list, since not all gum bases are safe. You would need to check with manufacturers (or trust gluten-free lists) in order to know which gums are safe. These are the ones I have listed as being gluten-free: Beech-Nut Gum: Cinnamon 5-stick; peppermint; spearmint Big League Chew Gum: Original; grape; strawberry Bubble Yum: All...
  24. You should check with each individual company to find out what is added to their "modified corn starch", sometimes it is modified with wheat, but not always. That is what makes it a questionable ingredient. God bless, Mariann
  25. Hi mdixon, You could ask the doctors to run some tests for various deficiencies on your daughter and then you would be able to customise her vitamin/mineral supplements to fit her needs. Once her intestines heal on the gluten-free diet you should start to see some growth. It may be all of a sudden or it may be gradual, but be very thankful that you...
