ARCHIVED Need Help
gf4life replied to S-EBarr's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Beth, Welcome to the board. You could just be taking a while to heal, or you could be getting a fair bit of gluten in accidently. If you post a sample of what you usually eat maybe we could try to pin down any culprits. You wouldn't believe all the things they put gluten in! If we don't find any foods (or medications) in your daily diet, then... -
ARCHIVED Durum Semolina
gf4life replied to nicolespeanut's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Either way, if you are gluten sensitive/intolerant or early celiac, any form of gluten grain is going to cause damage in your intestines, whether or not you have pain or other symptoms. You should probably give up all the gluten pastas. I like the brown rice pastas by Tinkyada. They have the best texture. God bless, Mariann -
ARCHIVED Question About Whey
gf4life replied to carleyq's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Here is what I have found, but if it is not correct, then someone please correct me. There is a difference between lactose (milk sugar) intolerance and casein (milk protein) intolerance. I have never heard of being specifically intolerant to whey, but whey contains both lactose and casein, so an intolerance to either of the others would cause a reaction... -
ARCHIVED Soy Oh Boy
gf4life replied to outthere39's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Heather, Many licorice candy products contain wheat, but natural licorice root is gluten-free. You can get gluten-free licorice candy and the DGL supplements are good for aiding digestion, but certainly don't taste much like licorice! Read every label if you do try to get some licorice. Running Rabbit brand makes black cherry, raspberry and black... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Diet After Transplantation -Why?
gf4life replied to ostap-bender-2002's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Ostap, A gluten free diet is quite easily digestible, and so by feeding this to a transplant patient (as well as cancer patients) it allows the body to focus more on healing the body and accepting the bone marrow transplant, by freeing up the excess effort the body would normally have to spend on digestion. You can read more about this process... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms Gone Today, Test Tomorrow-still Worth It?
gf4life replied to lilgreen's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your symptoms do not have to be severe for a biopsy to be positive, but you do need to be on gluten. Are you currently eating gluten-free or have you stayed on gluten for the biopsy?? The biopsy may not accurately show what is going on if you have already been eating gluten-free. My symptoms (before gluten-free diet) were off and on with some daily... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab
gf4life replied to concernedlady's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi YankeeDB, Anyone who tests negative would not bother to post at a Celiac message board. There are some people here(or at least on the old board) that have relatives who have tested negative. Obviously they are going to have a high number of positives since the people paying for testing are generally very symptomatic, and will have a higher rate... -
ARCHIVED Wheat-free & Gluten-free Foods May Contain Wheat
gf4life posted a topic in Publications & Publicity
I got this email from another support group I belong to and thought I would pass it on. Boy am I looking forward to getting the new labeling law passed!! Study: Wheat-Free Foods May Contain Wheat As Much as 20% of Wheat-Free Foods Contain Detectable Amount of Wheat Proteins By Melissa Schorr WebMD Medical News Reviewed By Brunilda Nazario... -
ARCHIVED Why Am I Not Improving?
gf4life replied to Jojes's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It may take up to a week or two for symptoms to go away and be obvious when a food is reintroduced. I am casein intolerant (so no dairy of any form for me) and when I have a dairy accident I suffer for quite a while (up to a week with bloating, gas and diarrhea). Judy is right about the tomatoes, they can be very irritating, also the OJ. I would skip acidic... -
I did read somewhere that smoking can mask the symptoms of Celiac in some people and they don't realise that they have it until after they quit, or the symptoms get so bad they can't help but notice them. I've never heard it put quite they way your doctor did, to say that it "protects against Celiac". That's interesting. God bless, Mariann
-
I agree with this. Most of the doctors that I have had problems with are gastro doctors who didn't think I could possibly be Celiac since I did not fit the symptoms (that they had learned in medical school) exactly, or I wasn't exactly like other Celiac patients of theirs. They did not like ME telling them what I thought about my own body! But on the...

ARCHIVED Fruit Snacks
gf4life replied to gf4life's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Ruth, I heard that not all Brachs brands are gluten-free (but this is not confirmed), and since my kids don't like the taste/texture of them I just avoid all of them anyhow. God bless, Mariann -
ARCHIVED Is There Suck Thing As Gf Cake?
gf4life replied to lyndszai's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You can usually find potato starch in the Kosher food section of most supermarkets. But you can also find it at healthfood stores and online. Potato starch is different than potato flour. The starch is what is used most often, so be careful not to get the potato flour. If it says potato starch flour then that means it is potato starch. God bless... -
ARCHIVED Is There Only One Lab For The Stool Test?
gf4life replied to the2ofus's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Robin, Quest labs does not do the gene test. It was ordered in the lab slip for Prometheus, but it wasn't done when the blood was sent to Quest. Enterolab uses a genetics lab in Denver, CO called Laboratories at Bonfils. They are one of the top genetics labs in the country. They do blood and cheek swab testing. Kimball labs also does blood and... -
ARCHIVED What Is It With Me
gf4life replied to mario's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Mario, Why they would make different meds for different counrties is unknown to me, but they do. And sometimes even the people who work for the companies don't realise it. I was looking into digestive enzymes a while back and found a really good brand called Udo's. They had a gluten free blend that was listed on their Canada site, but not their... -
ARCHIVED Is There Suck Thing As Gf Cake?
gf4life replied to lyndszai's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yes there are gluten-free cakes. The best I've tried is The Really Great Food Company Chocolate Cake Mix. This is also dairy free. But as your b-day is monday, you should probably try to make one from scratch, as you don't have time to make an online order. Do you have gluten-free flour? Rice flour and potato starch is a typical blend for gluten... -
ARCHIVED Is There Only One Lab For The Stool Test?
gf4life replied to the2ofus's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Tiffany, Sometimes written words can be decieving. I have unintentionally offended people by some e-mails I wrote to them. Unfortunately we cannot always accurately express the feelings behind written words and they can give the wrong impression. Especially frustration, and I get a sense of frustration coming from my e-mails from Dr. Fine. I do not... -
ARCHIVED Is There Only One Lab For The Stool Test?
gf4life replied to the2ofus's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Robin, In regards to the symptoms, Yes, the diarrhea did come and go, often with constipation in between. I don't think I had had a normal stool in more than a decade. My insurance paid for the blood tests, but through Quest labs all the kids came back inconclusive (psotive IgG, negative IgA). Their doctor wanted to run the tests through Promethius... -

Sara, It sounds yummy! I don't know if I want to go through trying to make enough wrappers to feed my large family. Does anyone know of any brands of egg roll wrappers that are gluten-free? I know that the filipino lumpia wrappers are made from wheat and rice flour (and I was very disappointed to find this out, since it will make family parties...

ARCHIVED Fruit Snacks
gf4life replied to gf4life's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Kathleen, Where do you get the "flat fruit"? I would like to get the real fruit bars since they are healthier, and Costco used to sell then, but they stopped a few years back. I can usually only find them in healthfood stores now and they are very pricey. With three kids (who want to eat them everyday) I can't afford $.50(and up) each. That would... -
ARCHIVED Waiting Forever For Test Results
gf4life replied to gfr123's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
They should have told you ahead of time that they might be taking a biopsy. This would have been less stressful for you. I was asleep for my endoscopy, so I wouldn't have known anyhow, but the first time the doctor did not biopsy, and the second time I made sure she was going to biopsy. If your blood test was positive for antibodies and you already... -
ARCHIVED This Advice Helped
gf4life replied to VAGuy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi VAGuy, What are you waiting for? You can do the tests on any diet you are on. If you have diarrhea, it does not matter. They are testing the levels of antibodies in your stool and the amount of fat that would indicate malabsorbtion. You do not have to be gluten-free or dairy-free. You do not have to wait until the diarrhea subsides, or anything... -
ARCHIVED Son Just Diagnosed
gf4life replied to Heather's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Heather, How old is your son. It can be hard on kids to switch suddenly. I know that he needs the diet, but what I did (and this may not be best for everyone) is to let the kids choose whether they finished off the food that was already in the house. (one of my boys ate a lot of it, my sickest child never touched one bit of any of it!) Explain to... -

This is the response I got from General Mills. it pretty much backs up what you said Dessa! Thank you for contacting General Mills regarding gluten in General Mills products. It is our primary goal to help our consumers determine whether or not they can include our products in their diet. To accurately accomplish this, we believe it is best...
