    ARCHIVED Joint Pain

I think it might be an autoimmune inflammatory response rather than malnourishment per se. My own pet theory for what it is worth is that systemic inflammation caused by gluten ingestion hurts our weak spots most. Where I suffered pain previously (and which seems to recur with gluten ingestion) is where I either have structual problems because of dodgy...
  2. I noticed worsening sensitivity after 3 months too. For me, I think it is mainly increased sensitivity rather than anything else (I am still dairy and oat free), but I am not ruling out other issues. Have gone back to diet basics to try to sort it out.

    ARCHIVED Joint Pain

tbritt - my glutening symptoms are exactly like yours re dizzyness/hung over feeling, bathroom runs etc. Add in a migraine with neck pain too. In the 3 years before going gluten free I suffered from frozen shoulder (capsulitis and tendonitis) in both shoulders. The most recent one eventually led to my diagnosis. Although I have only been gluten free for...
  4. I think I may be premenopausal because my menstrual cycles have cut down to only lasting one day and I am definitely not pregnant. I've had the hot flashes, cold sweats, anxiety, NO libido at one point (that parts fixed),etc. I have a history of eight miscarriages as well which is why they tested me for celiac disease.. most of which blighted ovums. (I do...
  5. Hi StacyA I am sorry to hear your Mother is having a tough time with PMR. Please find below a link to the article. The reference to PMR is in the section on atypical presentations. My symptoms of presumed PMR have completely disappeared with a gluten free diet, and they resurface in a mild form on exposure to small doses of gluten, lasting for a few...
  6. Picking up on a previous point about posters eliciting advice and then disappearing without coming back with updated information, I'm afraid I have been guilty of that. Maybe I am just paranoid but I had a rather uncomfortable experience and have been upset about it. Having had negative blood tests, and having more or less ruled out any other major "nasties...
  7. IrishHeart, your post made me smile as it is such a good summary of my experiences for the last 6 or 7 weeks since my diagnosis, including the list of weird reactions to many foods. In fact it is so good I have printed it off to take with me to the docs tomorrow for my first post-diagnosis follow up. I intended to write up my own notes for the meeting, but...
  8. Hi there Poor you! I think it must be tough to be GI in Italy.... The restaurant does sound like a cc risk if they are baking and maybe also making their own pasta. I'm new to this too (since August), and have had one major glutening incident. The symptoms were just like yours, only I could also add nausea, horrid large yellow you know whats, headache...
  9. Oh yeah! I have had chronic fatigue and sore lymph nodes for 25 years, and just learned to live with it as the docs weren't interested (just "post viral fatigue"). It has varied with my general health and stress levels. It has gradually been getting worse recently , particularly the last six months. I know what you mean about waking up feeling grotty...
  10. lynnelise - the rashes are not fun. Does yours vary with any foods/gluten, or just with the sun? I know where you are coming from re the job and a diagnosis. I have been struggling for about 3 years too. The celiac diagnosis and ongoing medical appointments help me manage employer expectations for the moment, but of course you never want to let colleagues...
  11. I converted it to F - but yeah- my normal temp is about 35.2 and fever and chills I'm at 37! Its so bizarre and I am sure its autoimmune - I've read stuff that points to that. So did you have one shirmers test or more that? How long have you been gluten free? Just the one - Doc was happy, and to be honest it hasn't been as bad lately, and other symptoms...
  12. I wouldn't actually advocate it as it is probably harmful for those celiacs whose weight is worryingly low, but I wonder if fasting helps the gut heal by giving it a bit of a rest from food? I say this as someone who had had fasting for 23-36 hours foisted upon them by regular bouts of sickness and D before I was diagnosed, and once due to glutening post...
  13. I've been regretting the gluten-free bread and pb. Had stomach ache later on, and felt a bit tired and wobbly/headachy, This morning my face is burning and I still have stomache ache. This seems like a cc reaction I think. I guess the pb (a new jar!) is probably the culprit, or maybe the soya flour in the bread, which I have otherwise avoided. I hope it...
  14. normal body temperature for me seems to be about 35 degrees C, which I think equates to about 90 degrees F. When I feel really feverish, and am laid out in bed, it is usually around 37 degrees, which is barely above normal. I always thought it was just an inaccurate thermometer reading! My symptoms are roughly similar to yours, although I think I just...

    ARCHIVED Cereal

Do you get "natures path" cereals in the US? They are approved by the UK celiac society, and I haven't had any overt problems with them, but have been careful about quantity etc. They have nice rice crispies and "mesa sunrise" which is made with quinoa and aramanth flours. I also like rice and buckwheat flakes from our supermarket which make a nice porridge...
  16. Chrissie I did respond and then lost it all....so here goes again. It took me a few weeks of eating like this to feel a bit better. Another poster here then suggested adding in some digestive enzymes to help with gas and problems with fatty foods. I did so and it has really helped. After about a week on the enzymes I am now starting to slowly try other...
  17. Other autoimmune disorders are known to have flares and periods of remission. Surely it is not a big stretch to see Celiac following such a pattern as well? I had what now seems to have been my first brush with Celiac 25 years ago, but it was put down to "mono" and post viral fatigue (the accompanying digestive problems were simply ignored by the docs...
  18. Beebs - Yes, everything you mention is the same for me. Do you also swell up with the photosensitivity, or get the rash only? My hands and forearms swell, as does my abdomen if I get a bit of warm sun on me. I can't take any heat over about 25 degrees C either, makes me feel unwell. I tested negative for Celiac, but have 5 other family members who are...
  19. So sorry you are still feeling so ill, on top of all the other things you deal with. I hope your doc gets to the bottom of it, and that you feel better soon. If it just a tiny crumb of consolation, at least you can say that your trip is just postphoned, and that your other home is just waiting for you to be able to get there when you are ready. Best wishes...
  20. Yes. I am under the care of a rheumatologist who is just observing at the moment. He would feel happier I think if I would accept a prescription for Presidone(sp?), but I am trying to avoid this and am hoping the gluten free diet will alleviate my symptoms. It seems to be helping with many things, but am still not sure that it is tackling everything. In...
  21. Many of us are using the board to for support in adjusting to a gluten free diet and for help in figuring out problems which seem to accompany the diagnosis. I thought perhaps it might cheer everyone up to take a moment to think about something, whether big or small, which helps make all the hard work worthwhile. For me, and as I sit here typing at my...
  22. Thanks for all your thoughts. I had thought it was an allergy type response, but wasn't sure, because I am new to both immediate gluten reactions and to allergies. I have had a couple of previous episodes recently of a response to nuts, but only to nut ingestion. I have no idea what else could have been triggering my response in that particular carriage...
  23. I was travelling home on a mostly empty train today, and I sat about 6 or 8 feet away from a woman who was eating a snack. Instantly my body started tingling and my chest started to tighten and my throat tickled. I moved to the end of the carriage, (and saw that she was eating a large pot of nuts coated in something or other). The end of the carriage still...
  24. Celiac definitely messes with your hormone systems somehow. There are quite well documented links between celiac disease and thyroid problems, and also reproductive hormones. I experimented with a gluten free diet about 6 or 7 years ago, and within a short time I felt really weird. The Doc found my thyroid was hyperactive. Instead of accepting a prescription...
  25. I had peptic ulcer issues on and off for 25 years, from my first brush with "mono" as a student. I spent several months on omeprazole earlier this year, together with anti-immflammatories, and eventually weaned myself off both during the summer as I felt my body had had enough medication. Shortly afterwards I received the celiac diagnosis on the basis of...
