  1. Hey all! So I lost a to of weight this year, some of which was fat, and some of which was muscle. Still losing tbh. My bones aren't sitting right, with knees, hips, and lower back being most out of whack and mushy feeling. Any suggestions for easy strength training exercises for someone who's still in the "needs 9-10 hours of sleep min." stage of healing...
  2. On the other hand, you get situations like I had the other day. There's an older gentleman at work who's old school Italian who commented that I looked great. And I said, yeah, well, it's cause I finally have a handle on my celiac. He started talking about his neuropathy, his balance issues, his headaches, his digestive problems. He's been to a dozen neuros...
  3. Hm, interesting. So do you think the celiac phenotype itself is linked in a block or a region of genes that is under positive selection? I ask, because celiac is not a lethal mutation from generation to generation, spontaneously arising, quite obviously. Nor does it prevent people from procreating under all circumstances, although there is good evidence...
  4. As an evolutionary biologist, I'd have to say that there's probably a reason that the genes for celiac disease have been preserved in the gene pool, much like the genes for sickle cell anemia have (people with one copy have increase immunity to malaria). Richard Dawkins (a very famous evolutionary biologist) would say that even though modern medicine...
  5. Hey guys. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I've been reading "Dangerous Grains," and the authors recommend a full allergy panel if you suspect Celiac disease or gluten intolerance. I've never had one done, so how do you go about finding a good allergist, and what tests do you ask for? Still been getting sick, especially last week. I WAS eating whole...
  6. 8 months later, when the season is literally done and I'm job hunting I have an LNS.

  7. So. Did anyone actually work yesterday? Or did we trash the department for shits and giggles?

  8. Piping in here to echo what everyone else has said. Also, bit of practical advice: Even though it's old school, a low dose of prozac has done wonders for me. My emotional wires were so crossed from celiac that I was crying all the time for no reason. Prozac balanced me out enough that I could concentrate, and seek out a diagnosis and start myself on gluten...
  9. I think April is secretly t'pring of Vulcan. #parksandrecs #StarTrek

  10. I just made the Bob's Red Mill gluten free brownies with fudge topping. Cheating a bit since it's not from scratch, but damn those things make my eyes roll back in my head. A word of caution- they do mean to melt the chocolate and cream on low heat. As in 1 or 2. Found that out the hard way. Luckily the pot was stainless and thus cleanable. Use ghiradeli...
  11. Sure! That specific article is Cerebellum Shapes Hippocampal Spatial Code Science 21 October 2011: Vol. 334 no. 6054 pp. 385-389 DOI: 10.1126/science.1207403 By C Rochefort, A Arabo, M Andre, B Poucet, and L Rondi-Reig. There's a bunch of Purkinje cell references in the Science classic archive if you just search Purkinje, but I don't have...
  12. Just listened to a sickening story about #southdakota selling #native children to white couples on #NPR. D=

  13. Coyote started tracking Jay and Angie on their walk. That was scary in and of itself, but what to make of this appearance of the trickster?

  14. It seems that Purkinje cells develop prenatally, and continue to generate their elaborate branching patterns after birth and during very young childhood (in humans I would guess 0-1 yrs or even less, but that's just a guess.) They seem to lose their ability to "bounce back" or heal from an injury pretty soon after that, but most of the developmental models...
  15. I just find eating out ridiculously hard. I've had dishes served to me that the waitpersons swore up and down was gluten free. I've then returned home and found out things like...oh that tomato soup had four TABLESPOONS of wheat flour in it to thicken it. It's just gotten...wearying, tbh. I prefer eating at home because I know exactly what goes into what...
  16. P.S. The dark circles happened to me too, and started clearing up around month 1, although they're still there to an extent. I assume they'll keep clearing up. Also, drink more water.
  17. He's just not used to you being gluten free. It took my mom a whole weekend of following me around and watching what I ate, and basically shadowing me before she "got it." She still hasn't cooked for me, and I likely wouldn't trust her to for a while yet unless I was looking over her shoulder. Your Dad will come around in time, especially if food is an...
  18. It's been two months since I went off wheat cold turkey, and my fiance brought home a huge damn box of Krispy Kremes. I have been okay with a lot of things, but that, I just had to put my foot down and make him hide it in the cupboard I rarely go into, and not eat in front of me. It's going to be tough, really tough, and sometimes it's okay to articulate...
  19. Hey guys, I was reviewing my twitter feed this morning, and the journal Science has an abstract and article in it this month about the neurological mechanisms underlying spatiottemporal navigation. The brain cells that mediate this process are called Purkinje cells. This caught my eye, because William Davis explains in Wheat Belly, these are the exact cells...
  20. Nightmares all last night. #wheat is the devil!

  21. I'm not #Jewish, so I just don't know what that means!

  22. That's awful. I've been to restaurants before where they've sworn up and down they cooked my order gluten free, and I even ordered off the gluten free menu. Alas- I was running to the bathroom ten minutes later. Sometimes you just wanna eat without panicking, or feeling really crappy the next day. =(
  23. Okay lovelies, this has been fun, but it's time to go get a new phone! Buying the iphone 4 in white.

  24. Anyone watching #OnceUponaTime tonight? It looks really cool. =)
