  1. I actually really do relate to this, but my advice would be to switch it around and try active listening. It's a skill I use in sales, and I've found it works amazingly well talking to people about their medical problems. Sometimes, people really do know someone else that has celiac, and they have very useful advice that I didn't know about. Sometimes...
  2. Yeah, hi, hello, the OP DID try to handle it on her own by calling the hostess. She didn't in fact talk to the nephew or the bride, she talked to the shower planner. The hostess very much should have been able to arrange a gluten free meal easily, or if not, should have been able to communicate that back to the OP in a professional manner. Instead...
  3. Oh yeah, didn't mean to imply you had said skip the antibiotics (though some people do swear to skip them). And I do plan to try the neti pot again later tonight, after the antibiotics have had a chance to kick in. Right now, I'm going to enjoy me new knickers I bought waiting for the pharmacist to fill my prescription. My new favoritist thing in the world...
  4. I have one and actually used it today, but it was really acutely painful on the ears especially. I've always been told when that's the case, stop. And run, don't walk, to your nearest doctor. I'm all about GMO, organic, antibiotic free AMAP, but I am also a trained scientist. Antibiotics are sometimes necessary to continuing good health. I'll knock out the...
  5. Ugh, I still have no immune system to speak of. I'm pretty darn near immuno-compromised. Sinus infections with double ear infections today. I love my life. Last sick day used up to go to the PCP and get some antibiotics, which I detest. I do however, recognize their actual usefulness in real medical situations such as these.
  6. I didn't initially suspect super sensitivity, because when I went gluten free, I was still tolerating some wheat products as I recall. That said, I'll be honest and admit that my last wheat eating days are all foggy and lost in a haze. But you do seem to be correct that I am getting more sensitive as time goes on. Eh, we all have our crosses to bear...
  7. Cully and Gavin, my new adorable OTP.

  8. This chapter in #WheatBelly on the neurological effects of wheat on a #celiac is just fucking depressing. Dammit. *cry cry cry*

  9. ... McCormick's Tomato, Garlic, and Basil Marinade, in their Grillmaster line of products. Also, reading through previous threads, I found a reported conversation between a forum member and a McCormick's representative. The rep said that celiacs who are highly sensitive to cross contamination should probably not eat McCormick's mixes, because...
  10. Um, no, it was definitely dinner that made me ill. As the other two things I made were plain, it was the spice mix. My reaction time for direct ingestion of a large amount of gluten is quite short, and the reactions are unmistakeable. The only other questionable ingredient on there was sunflower oil, which I understand is usually cross contaminated with gluten...
  11. Just as an FYI- I just made dinner with a marinade from McCormick's that I thought was safe, because there was no declared wheat flour or gluten stated on the back of the packet. That said, it didn't say it was *specifically* gluten free. The only other things I had with dinner were plain brown rice and plain broccoli with olive oil, so I know it was...
  12. I just hope you're not going to throw the baby out with the bathwater. You look at that spoon and think well, there might be 20ppm gluten on there, sod all, I'm just going to go for the whole shebang and eat that cookie. Don't do that. We do our very, very best to limit our gluten exposure, WITHOUT making ourselves crazy over it. Do get separate dishes...
  13. Such an interesting article. As I am mostly Irish and Lebanese, I feel I genetic timebomb waiting to go off with regards to celiac. With all of the mixing of the genetic subpopulations that goes on in the U.S., I'll bet there's usually a dilution of unfavorable genes. But in the case of celiac, I wonder how often there are actually pairings that are actually...
  14. I'm halfway through, and there are sixteen pages of credible medical references in the back. It ranges from an anthropological exploration of wheat's place within the American culture, to it's effects on Celiac, it's role in the formation of diabetes, it's neurological effects, and much much more besides. It is an AMAZING book. The author is a renowned...
  15. Glutenfreemama- No offense, but that diet is the exact opposite of anything I'd willingly choose to eat myself. I'd also never recommend that to someone just *starting* gluten free. I recommend simple, single ingredient whole foods. Fruits, vegetables, unprocessed, lightly herbed meats. Organic to the extent that it is possible. Eggs. Brown and basmati...
  16. Also, I want a tea set. And to join a ladies reading club.

  17. I've been reading Wheat Belly, and it's really diffcult for me to see just what redeeming value there is in the grain. It really is. As for school lunch, I grew up on it, in a very very wealthy public school district, where there was plenty of choice for healthy options. That's a far cry from where I *taught* school, which was poor as poor can be. The...
  18. Hence why I was initially pleased, and then rolling my eyes. Way to go with continuing the mediocrity, FDA. Actually, I'm convinced they're not that dumb, and it's all about wheat subsidies. But I'm cynical like that. Until people recognize en masse that they have to take personal responsibility for their own health, this travesty will continue.
  19. Just saw the evening news. The Food and Drug Administration in the U.S. is recommending the elimination of all potato products at breakfasts in U.S. public schools to address childhood obesity. Is this good, I ask myself? Their recommendation? Add more fruits. Check. Vegetables. Check. And whole grains. Which in the U.S. amounts to wheat. Wheat, wheat...
  20. I really agree with you that "normies" , can be deeply disturbed by our disease and diet. I've had CANCER survivors be, if not rude, at least surprised and taken aback at the diagnosis and the diet restrictions. You'd think they would understand, at least on a fundamental level, about your body attacking you. Anthropologically, not eating wheat for...
  21. No offense to the many, many men that suffer celiac, but I think there's a huge degree a misogyny in the way celiac, and indeed a lot of the autoimmunes are treated, to this day. I can't tell you the number of times I've heard, oh, it's just feminine problems. It's hysteria. It's hypochondria. You know what? No. These are REAL physical problems, with...
  22. Hi, hello, welcome! Even though I'm a fairly newcomer here myself! THAT is along string of diagnoses, but they are all manageable. It does sound like you are full blown celiac, instead of intolerant. This is made even more likely by the genetic connection to a first-degree relative (your mom). If you've been given the go ahead, you can start eating gluten...
  23. That's such an insaaaaaaane risk. Does she not get that the cancer risk ONLY decreases with a strict, 100% gluten free diet? I mean, I know we all have to die of something, but that seems so needlessly preventable. Also...painful. Ouch.
  24. Weeellll, that's a bit of a sticky situation. I live in Massachusetts, and they're revamping the healthcare system here again to a global payment system from fee for service. The docs are pre-emptively cutting down on visits and tests in preparation. My last visit to my GP, I asked her about my hair falling out (and I do mean significantly), and all she...
  25. I'm taking 10,000 IU/day. But then, my blood tests were, OMG WHY AREN'T YOU DEAD YET? defcient back in May. I think I was, 12? Very low, at any rate. I feel better- fewer migraines, much less bruising. I don't know what's D and what's gluten free, but I'm erring on the side of being genetically incapable of manufacturing or absorbing this nutrient myself...
