My in-laws (my husband's brother and his wife) live near Franklin. They have a farm -- it is so cool. They're very environmentally conscious, so they grow grass-fed cattle, with NO growth hormone, no unnecessary antibiotics, and grow goats for goat milk. My sister-in-law doesn't even like the thought of putting dye on easter eggs, so she buys chickens that lay eggs in color! Seriously -- some lay pinkish eggs, some lay the regular peach-y color, some lay TEAL eggs -- it's amazing! She had an elderly man come onto the property with a divining rod to find a spring. The first spot he found, he told them not to drill, it just wasn't strong enough. The second spot he found, he said "this is it" -- they drilled there, and the spring started out pumping 50 gallons of water per minute! My brother -in-law couldn't believe it. He had told her that they couldn't afford it, that they would have to rent the equipment for months before they found a spring that would run enough to supply all five fields (they rotate the cows each day), and it was impossible. She always believes that there's nothing impossible, and she's the one who usually proves it -- what an AMAZING woman!
BTW: Your picture is not, I hope, of the area in which you live. If so, I can tell you that YOUR version of the Ohio is a lot more beautiful than OUR version!

Typically, in VERY SMALL PRINT, at the bottom of a product are the words "a subsidiary of . . . . " That's how I often know. I can tell you that Max Factor, Oil of Olay & Pantene are subsidiaries -- that's what I know so far. Will keep the thing going -- I'm on a mission!

Thanks for the heads up, Patti -- I am really starting to believe that this is DH. When I do pop them, I have sores for about two weeks -- makes you really want to leave them alone, becaue you know that you're just going to look worse! . .. . Lynne

I have gluten intolerance, but I have "autoimmune cerebellar disease" or they also call it "gluten ataxia". Instead of having celiac symptoms, the antigliadin antibodies cross-react with anti-perkinje cell antibodies which I also produce -- working to destroy the perkinje cells. Unfortunately, they don't regenerate, and they're in the cerebellum of my brain, my retinas and my peripheral nerves.

My response:
I find it very distressing, at best, that you need a letter on Physician's letterhead for one specific product to determine if it is gluten-free or not. I would think that, as a consumer, I would be able to gather information from you with the same amount of importance and respect that you would show a physician.
I am sorely disappointed in your answer, I can forward to you a copy -- on my physician's prescription pad -- a statement that I must maintain a gluten-free status. This physician happens to be a neurologist. You see, not all gluten intolerance -- an autoimmune disease -- affects the small intestines and bowel. Gluten, and the antibodies which my body produces against it, cross react with other antibodies which I produce. The result of this is that, it is slowly destroying the perkinje cells in my body. They happen to lie predominantly in the cerebellum of the brain, the retinas of the eyes and the peripheral nerves. They don't regenerate. So you see, each time that I come in contact with gluten -- maybe I've washed my hands with gluten-containing soap and put my finger to my mouth or eyes -- another part of my brain, my eyes and my nerves are destroyed, and my functional ability continues to decrease. I'm in a wheelchair now . . . should this continue on to my brainstem, ultimately, it could potentially cause death. Perhaps, now, you see the reason that I am insulted, at minimum, by your answer.
There are at least 7,000 of us out there -- and that number is miniscule compared to those who are actually diagnosed and just haven't been vocal. I can assure you, however, that I will post your degrading answer on the Celiac forum's message board so that they, too can see the indifference which you obviously have with regard to consumer health issues. I can also tell you that, in the future, I will no longer purchase Proctor & Gamble Products, nor anything from your subsidiary companies, and I will urge all others who read the forum, and those I know to do the same.

Got another "blanket" reply, and sent the same response as in the previous one, except I changed the "shampoo" part to "what if a person uses your foundation or lipstick and it contains gluten?". Here's another CMA:

Thanks for contacting Max Factor, Lynne.
We know Celiac is a serious disease, so we want to give you clear information
regarding the use of our beauty care products. If wheat and/or gluten aren't
directly added to a product by us, these ingredients won't be listed on our
packages. Like many companies, we often purchase the scents for fragranced
products from outside suppliers, and the components of these substances are
proprietary information belonging to those companies. Therefore it's possible
that a very small amount (generally parts per million) of gluten may be present.
We sought advice from physicians; they told us it would be very unlikely a
person with Celiac disease would have a reaction from a trace amount of gluten
coming into contact with his skin or hair. This is because wheat, rye, barley
and/or gluten generally cause symptoms when they're ingested. Since our beauty
care products are designed to be used externally on the skin, their use
shouldn't be an issue for someone with this disease.
Since gluten sensitivity can vary among people, it would be best if you
consulted with your physician about the use of all types of consumable goods, if
you haven't already. You might even consider using one of our fragrance free
products that doesn't list gluten or wheat extracts on the label.
Thanks again for getting in touch with us. I hope this response has been
helpful to you. For more information about Celiac, you may want to check out

My Response:
Just a "heads up" with regard to the gluten issue -- some people with Dermatitis Herpatiformis -- a very painful skin condition -- can react to topical gluten. I think, that I, along with 7,000 (at least) other people who have an autoimmune condition that reacts to gluten, would appreciate it if you delved further into what your suppliers are sending you. I think that in some cases "ignorance is bliss", but what happens if a parent is washing their child's hair with your shampoo, and the child gets a gulp of soapy water? To say that "well, our supplier might have caused his / her flare up" sure is a pretty thin excuse. To let you know: celiac disease is not the only condition related to gluten intolerance. In my case, gluten destroys the perkinje cells in my body -- they are located in the cerebelllum of my brain, in my retinas and in my peripheral nerves -- and they do not regenerate. So every time I come in contact with gluten, another part of my functional ability goes away forever.
I appreciate your prompt response, but urge you to communicate further with your suppliers to ensure that your products are gluten-free. I can assure you that, should you choose to do this, you will have a large number of extremely devoted consumers. Thank you again for your time and consideration . . . .

NOT to blast chiropractors, but they often advertise locally that they can cure celiac here. They insist that if the spine is in proper alignment, all disease processes will diminish and eventually leave . . . Hmmmm. . . .

Our Kroger has had the old stuff for a LONG time! Sorry I missed your post, Vincent -- REALLY sorry. I guess I have to go back to eating the expensive honey coated Puffins cereal. How are we going to get these companies to understand the necessity for gluten-free products -- besides the ones that are outrageously expensive? Something has to be done.
I eat the environkids panda bars -- the peanut butter ones are really good! The problem is, I don't want to eat just one!
Thanks for all your help and input. I'm calmed down now -- do I need to go in my shell like Karen did? Will do if I have to!
You guys are great . . . Lynne
P.S. Nini -- if you haven't checked out Vincent's website, you should treat yourself. The family stuff is fun and cute, and the astronomy stuff is out of this world (I swear I didn't mean to say that).

Yes, I tossed and turned all night -- didn't sleep AT ALL. I am so furious. I agree with (can't remember who it was) about being typical Americans -- she's right -- sue their asses -- get a class action suit going, and they'll have to answer to what did you say, 7,000 people? I also posted a thread about Kroger Golden Korn Nuggets discreetly adding CONTAINS: WHEAT now at the bottom of their box -- and am wondering how long they contained wheat before getting nailed and having to list it. I think these companies need to be made examples and need to be held responsible for making a LOT of people very sick. I'm usually not either litigious nor this angry, but this crap has to stop. We need to know that our food is safe -- and that the companies can't change ingredients on a whim without informing us. Anyway, I'm finished. Sorry for venting so much . . . I'll be less aggressive some other time
. . . Lynne

Fairy Sprinkle -- that sounds JUST like what breaks out on the whole perimeter of my face -- my mom even commented one time "WHAT has happened to your face -- it was fine yesterday." Then told me that, if I thought it was gluten-related, she wanted me to have it biopsied. Easy for her to say -- the thought of having a chunk of your face removed is kind of unnerving . . . . Lynne
-
SuzieQ: If your IgG antigliadin antibodies were that high, you obviously have gluten intolerance -- an autoimmune disease. Antitransglutaminase antibody and Antiendomysial antibody testing are more specific for Celiac. The most definitive diagnosis comes from the small intestine biopsy.
I have high IgG antigliadin antibodies, but have had all the other tests and they are negative for celiac. I do, however, have Gluten Ataxia -- the antigliadin antibodies are cross-reacting with anti-perkinje cells in my body and destroying the perkinje cells in my cerebellum, retinas and peripheral nerves. It is an autoimmune disease, and most recent studies are calling it the "silent celiac".
I agree with Ursula -- I would have the lesion biopsied to find out if it is DH. After that, if necessary, I would push for the additional blood tests, and possibly the small intestine biopsy.
-
Can't change them, only you . . . I do the same thing -- make my stuff, then take it wherever I need to take it! I will say, though, my husband is having a really difficult time with this -- with my family and his. Birthdays are BIG at our house -- but since I've been diagnosed, I haven't been able to participate in the cake and ice cream. I had to bake my own brownies one time, and no one would turn the oven on for me (I'm a little "inconvenienced" in the wheelchair). My husband has decided that for MY birthday, we're telling the family that he's taking care of the cake & ice cream. Then, when it comes time for the birthday part, we won't have anything. When they ask where the cake is, we're going to tell them that we're having the cake and ice cream that I have at EVERY birthday -- and so are they. Passive-Aggressive? Definitely. But sometimes you have to stun them before they "get it". . . . Good luck with your mom . . . .Lynne
-
I'm on a mission to find out about what I'm putting on my skin -- even Bare Escentuals, which I thought was completely gluten-free, has gluten in their skin revver-upper lotion. I'm sorely disappointed! I love their stuff!

Haven't heard from any others, and as you can see, these are NOT lists! will keep you posted. I've e-mailed Proctor & Gamble, Colgate Palmolive, Revlon, Almay, Maybelline, Max Factor, Bonne Bell (for the teenagers) Covergirl, Pantene (because they have been listed as gluten-free), Lauren Hutton collection and Bare Escentuals. I asked for lists of all products which are gluten free. We'll see what happens! I know that ALL Estee Lauder companies (EL, Clinique, Mac, Bobbie Brown, Prescriptives, Loreal) will not guarantee that any of their products are gluten-free. At least that's what they told me about 5 months ago.
Let's see what happens . . . Lynne
-
I knew that Kellogg's Corn Pops contained gluten, but have consistently read the packaging on Kroger brand Golden Corn Nuggets -- and nowhere was it listed that it contained wheat. My latest package, however, says at the bottom, in dark letters, CONTAINS: WHEAT. I am wondering how LONG it has contained wheat and if, in fact, Kelloggs produces them and forgot to inform Kroger. I am in the healthcare field, and therefore despise the prospect of litigation (there are so many frivolous lawsuits) HOWEVER: gluten destroys my brain, my retinas and my peripheral nerves. It also wreaks hell on patients with celiac enteropathy. If we have been glutened because of incomplete / improper food labeling, I am all for a class-action lawsuit. I know that sounds extreme, but I am FURIOUS. I just ingested about 1/3 of a new box within the last two weeks, and can't understand why I'm falling so much more and my vision has gotten worse. Now I know why . . . .
Does anyone know anything about this? Lynne

This thread is becoming like road kill for me -- don't want to look for fear of what I'll see next, but can't NOT look. To all of you who have In-and-Out burgers, you have now idea how extremely envious I am right now. I can remember that on trips to California, I would order a regular burger and the guy I was dating would say "she wants a double double" -- oh my gosh -- talk about a great burger! At any rate, I'll keep reading each day, a couple times a day, because, basically, I can't stop myself. Hugs to you all . . . Lynne
