ARCHIVED What Do You Miss?
BeFree replied to celiacchef's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
"I miss the simplicity. I used to make many recipes using things like prepackaged cresent rolls etc. It's just harder now to make the same things. And of course going to parties or restraunts has many challenges." I hear ya...it takes a lot more planning. Brown rice is now (by necessity) a huge staple of my diet, and it take 45 minutes (!) to cook it... -
ARCHIVED Friends Throwing A Party For Me With Food
BeFree replied to BeFree's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks for your help everyone. This will be my first big "test" of having to stand my ground and not eat anything under peer pressure. -
"You could just leave the bread on the counter in an airtight container. That's where mine is. I bought it unfrozen why would I freeze it." I think you're talking about a different brand of bread. I'm referring to the brand that comes frozen, from the freezer section of the store by the pizzas and such, and on the package it specifically says, "Keep...

ARCHIVED Friends Throwing A Party For Me With Food
BeFree replied to BeFree's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks Cara, it probably would help to bring along my own piece of cake. That way others don't feel like they are eating in front of me. I can get a fresh piece of cake from the store before I go. That way people will also see the cake in my hand and say hey what's that...kind of a conversation starter! -
Yikes it sounds painful...I started reading the thread but then got to the part about possibly needing stitches and started to cringe. I am NOT good with needles. I am 39, but I think I would still need to have my mom come along and distract me during the process as is suggested for the small child. I guess it's better than having to go back...

ARCHIVED Friends Throwing A Party For Me With Food
BeFree replied to BeFree's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well...I'm not concerned about going hungry or feeling deprived, I can have all the cake I want from the grocery store. I just want to be polite. And I want to know a good way to explain it to them, I don't want to hide anything, I want to tell the truth. And I definitely don't want to eat anything there b/c of the CC. I'm thinking something along the... -
I've noticed some persons on the board posting that it's inconvenient to have frozen bread rather than (the old) freah kind, and saying that it's really hard to pry the pieces apart. Just wanted to say I have always kept the loaf in the door of the freezer where it's not quite as cold, rather than inside the freezer, and the pieces come apart really easily...

ARCHIVED Friends Throwing A Party For Me With Food
BeFree posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just found out that some very nice people at my work, who do not know that I am gluten-free, are throwing a surprise party for me in 2 days, complete with cake and food. (I'm not supposed to know about it.) Obviously I won't be able to eat anything that they will have so thoughtfully brought and/or made. Any advice on how to handle this in the most polite... -
ARCHIVED The Chronicles Of Pooping
BeFree replied to Homerhurts's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
"According to that video, I have never had a normal poop (at least I don't remember one so if I did it was many many years ago...) What does that mean? It has gotten a lot better since going gluten free but it still is not normal." I never had a normal poop either...until now!!!! I've been gluten-free for 6 months and I'm finally starting to have healthy... -
Thanks SI.

"Yes. The diagnosis of dermatitis herpetiformis is a diagnosis of celiac by definition, the skin form rather than the gut form. This is why people who have only the skin manifestation often cannot get a diagnosis by biopsy. If you can get it from a knowledgeable doc it is an easier way to go." Nice! Now, what exactly is a "punch biopsy of the skin"...

So, Mushroom, this could possibly be a way to get diagnosed with Celiac *without* having to go back to eating gluten for three months? If the doctor diagnoses DH they will also diagnose Celiac?

ARCHIVED What Do You Miss?
BeFree replied to celiacchef's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
"I think the chef has abandoned us. He has not been back since this first post back in October '11 so we may be talking to the air at this point." LOL at the mysterious disappearing Chef. I miss Taco Bell. That cheap, junky goodness that reminded me of happy high school and college days. There's no substitute for that. -
ARCHIVED I Miss Beer
BeFree replied to mcc0523's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I also used to love beer, most of all the seasonal ones, and my very favorite was Blue Moon Summer Honey Wheat. It was a ritual for me to go out and buy some of this beer on the first warm beautiful day of Spring. In fact, I still have some in my fridge from LAST summer, because I just can't bear to throw it away! Mind you, I'm not tempted to drink it... -
"Haha! That is great. At first I thought they were singing "Celiacs, you'll die in 4 weeks" ... then later in the song realized it was "you'll diet for weeks" ... that's better!" LOLOL

Thanks so much for all your responses: In answer to your responses and also some more questions.... "Your description of them lined up in a row is a hallmark of a certain variant of DH. That is exactly how my hubs' looked, marching downing his forehead in formation" Wow interesting--I guess that probably explains why the doctor didn't know what it...

For most of my life, I have had these strange little itchy bumps that pop up every once in a while. They are very tiny like little bug bites, and there are usually 5 or 6 of them in a line. They are there for a few days and then they go away. They seem to always come back in the same spots. If I get it in a new spot, then it will just keep coming back...

ARCHIVED Other Food Intolerances
BeFree replied to BabsV's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I kept a very detailed food diary for months and wrote down everything I ate plus all symptoms I experienced and what time of day it happened. I ate almost all natural foods/just fruits and veggies etc, and whenever I ate something in a package I saved the package so I could go back and look at the ingredients later if needed. I experienced severe D... -
OMG love it!!! That should be on our front page.

ARCHIVED Celiac And Family Genetics
BeFree replied to scottyg354's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't have any history of Celiac in my family that I know of, but I do have a family history of diabetes, (and also of generalized undiagnosed food intolerances), and I hear that diabetes and Celiac can ride on the same gene. Thus I guess from that gene, you could end up with either diabetes or Celiac? I'd choose Celiac over diabetes. -
ARCHIVED Yeah, But Yours Wasn't Real
BeFree replied to Kimbalou's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Aw sweetie I'm sorry. *hugs* Take it with a grain of salt though, a lot of people that aren't on this diet simply just don't have any idea what gluten-free food is. They think of it is something "fake" or "artificial" like a Diet Coke vs. a "real" Coke. They don't mean to hurt your feelings, I'm sure. Don't give up. The more you eat "your" food around... -
It's definitely possible. For one thing, they have found that emotions and nervous system reactions can arise from the intestines, as well as the brain. This is why people have always said they have a "gut feeling", now scientists know why. It's pretty fascinating stuff. There's an article about here: Open Original Shared Link
