ARCHIVED Universal Studios In Hollywood - And Surronding Areas
dandt replied to Darissa's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I didn't do any research before we went and my family ended up wandering into an italian place before i had noticed so i had a bit of a dodgy salad. it was quite gross and i didn't eat much of it. Later in the day I had some hot chips. I didn't check if they were gluten free but i was hungry. -
ARCHIVED When You First Went Gluten Free, Did You Lose Weight?
dandt replied to Prezwilson15's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I lost a little weight but not heaps. I was losing weight until I started eating alot of rice and pre-packaged gluten free foods. Almost a year after I went gluten-free I'm starting to lose weight, but more because I'm not snacking AT all and going back to basics with jsut salads and stuff. I wasn't overweight and I'm almost 21 so I've lost 5kg or so (well... -
ARCHIVED Substituting Xanthan Gum And Guar Gum?
dandt replied to dandt's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks!! I didn't see the reply until I had put the dough in the fridge but went ahead and just substituted it hoping for the best. Haven't rolled the cookies out yet or anything but the dough was fantastic! Pretty sure I now love xanthan gum!!! -
ARCHIVED Substituting Xanthan Gum And Guar Gum?
dandt posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Okay so I'm not sure if this has been posted elsewhere but is anyone able to tell me if I can use xanthan gum instead of guar gum in a cookie recipe? The recipe calls for guar but I've never seen it where I live and only have xanthan. Do I just put in the same amount? Thanks (I'm making gingerbread men with this recipe: Open Original Shared Link) -

ARCHIVED What Kind Of Holiday Cookies Do You Make?
dandt replied to alex11602's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm in Australia so cooking heaps at christmas time isn't really nice because it is jsut so damn hot! Despite this, and rather stupidly as the air conditioner is broken, I've decided to make gingerbread men. Made some last night but decided to try again today, this time with xanthan gum. Little nervous as I've never used it but it jsut wouldn't stick. -
ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
dandt replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
My brother used to be on the gluten-free/cf diet years ago before compliance became too difficult and we went on a holiday to canberra and deeks was so yummy!! I'm currently waiting on my gluten-free gingerbread men. Struggled a bit to get them to stick together but my mother came to my aid with a tub of nuttelex (we seriously have like 6 tubs in the fridge... -
ARCHIVED Baked Goods W/o Xanthan Gum
dandt replied to AVR1962's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've never used xanthan or guar gum. Admittedly I haven't done alot of baking, but I've made slices and cakes without it. Cookies haven't fared too well (currently trying to fix my gingerbread men ) but I suppose I've used almond meal instead of flour alot? -
ARCHIVED gluten-free For Broke College Kids
dandt replied to MissHaberdasher's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
okay I'm in the same situation as you. I've been on campus until now so I'm moving out for the rest of my degree. When I'm at home, particularly when I first started the diet, I pretty much just had grilled chicken, sometimes with herbs or garlic, with lettuce, tomato and grilled red onion and capsicum. Mainly because my mum was on a diet and it was what... -
ARCHIVED Traveling With Celiac
dandt replied to looking for info's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm actually going to vegas in january. I've found out that there is a bakery that is gluten free and newly opened (Open Original Shared Link). Apart from that I haven't done too much research. I haven't really travelled either and this will be a big challenge as it's an overseas trip for me. I read somewhere that the bigger places seem to be pretty good... -
ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed And Feel Like Its The End Of The World!
dandt replied to ScarlettsMommy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I do that all the time. I seriously would struggle at the supermarket some days without my iphone! I usually just type in "is productname gluten free" and I get the answer straight away. Probably not the best way, but I'm usually checking ingredients. -
ARCHIVED Best Friend Making Fun Of Me?
dandt replied to MenHen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My friends have been like this. I say friends but they really aren't close friends anymore. Earlier in the year when I had been gluten free 3 months or so one of them got cranky that I wouldn't eat donuts because everyone else was. She said just to suck it up and I was just making it all up anyway. That really hurt because I considered her my best friend... -

Wow thanks for all the info! As for what I like... EVERYTHING!!! When I was younger I read ALOT and most of the books I read, mainly because of the availability, were thinks like Little Sister and Babysitter club and I just remember all the names of lollies and different foods that weren't available here. Yeah... from about 13 I wanted to travel to the... -
ARCHIVED Holiday Party At Work Today
dandt replied to Marilyn R's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm a student and I work part time for my parents. The plan this year was that there were hot and cold platters and we would cook kebabs. I knew 2, possibly 3 of the 4 kebab varieties were safe. The plan changed when no one cooked the kebabs. So there was essentially nothing for me. Thinking of the kebabs I didn't bring dip and biscuits or heat up pies... -

ARCHIVED Do I Really Need My Own Pots And Pans?
dandt replied to ScarlettsMommy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm actually curious about this as well. My family didn't replace anything as I don't have any actual diagnosis but improved and advised by naturopath to stick to a gluten free diet. We use non-stick things as well as normal metal pots. Are non-stick bad? I am now moving into a share house and trying to work out who should buy what. Should I just let... -
I hate when people are clueless too. One of my 'close friends' just told me to stop exaggerating and 'suck it up' one day when I said I couldn't have donuts!

ARCHIVED Cold Weather Makes Me Hungry...
dandt replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm in australia so we don't have freezing winters, at least where I live, but this year it pretty much rained all summer (hence all the flooding) so it was pretty cold, for summer at least. Then, if that wasn't enough, it pretty much rained for most of winter. Rainy days make me crave bad food like KFC nuggets and yummy hot chips. -
ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
dandt replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Oh man I hadn't even thought to look at the quinoa! Every time I'm in Woolies I get disappointed to see the pizza stuff! I thought it was just my dodgy CQ store but obviously not!!! While coles have a better range I find I probably buy more from woolies at the moment just because they have better quality vegies, at least at my store. They also... -

Oooh that makes me really excited because I'm(I mean I was) addicted to salt and vinegar chips and I looked up kettle chips then and the salt and vinegar ones are gluten free. Looks like I'm bringing back a suitcase full of those!!! Also thanks so much for all your tips olivegirl! It's great to hear from a fellow Aussie -
ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed And Feel Like Its The End Of The World!
dandt replied to ScarlettsMommy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know how you feel. I'm just intolerant (well maybe coeliac because my doctor googled the condition and said 'i think this is the right test to run'.... *facepalm*) but all my favourite foods are laden with gluten. Even my favourite chip flavour is almost IMPOSSIBLE to find gluten-free (is salt and vinegar really that hard?? I've gone through so many bottles... -

Thanks so much! I can't wait now!!! I'm on day 3 of a 3 day detox for other reasons and basically I can't have any protein so it's just fruit and veg so I'm making myself extremely hungry by looking at the deliciously unhealthy greasy burgers It's great that they will wrap them in lettuce! -
ARCHIVED First Time On Plane Celiac
dandt replied to slee11211's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I'm also gluten and dairy free and the flight I usually take mainly only serves a refreshment so I can't have a gluten-free meal. I usually just accept it and have a look at what is inside. Ingredients are usually on all the little packets so I just work out what I can have and take the rest with me to give to someone at the other end. All these other... -
Oooh thanks for this! I'm an aussie heading over to vegas in january so I was starting to worry about food I shall be printing this out to take with me
