  1. I know somebody's probably said this already on your mac/cheese thread, but just in case they haven't ---- the damage that gluten has done to your daughter's intestinal villi can also make her temporarily unable to process dairy foods as well. (The very tip of the villi has the responsibility of doing that; if her villi are partly or completely gone...you...
  2. Well, in DH's defense, he's always had the best eating habits of anyone I know, and more self-discipline than Gandhi! He isn't giving our son a "just a little won't hurt" model, quite the opposite; it's a "everything could be bad" model. Reading over the posts (thank you all!) I think maybe I am actually feeling guilty about all the things he really can...
  3. I know it's going to seem non-supportive, but my DH is driving me nuts. I spend every Sunday afternoon making gluten-free food, what seems like tons of time educating myself about what is and isn't gluten-free, and it's all neatly labelled in our re-arranged kitchen (our son is celiac disease too) and this weekend he went to visit his parents and he comes...
  4. My son was dx at 10, and I just wanted tell you that he is a pasta lover as well -- and has been very happy with the assortment of gluten-free pastas available. No deprivation for him! I don't know how much apprehension your daughter has about blood draws, but since we are (unfortunately) very experienced in this department, I wanted to offer that you...
  5. I don't know why I just got mine now, but the May issue of Prevention magazine include Celiac as one of the 7 conditions doctors routinely miss, with a nice sidebar about "what to know" about Celiac disease. And Dr. Green from Columbia is their expert (celiac3270, isn't that your doctor?)
  6. Oh my! Just to clarify (because re-reading, I sound like a monster!) I also would never subject any possible celiac to a "classic" gluten challenge --- the 6-8 weeks of eating wheat and then bloodtesting. Medieval.I was thinking thatif you wanted to avoid a doctor insisting on bloodwork and a scope, but wanted to "convince" the doctor that the celiac dx is...
  7. I'm no doctor, but anybody here can tell you that if your son's bloodwork was negative to begin with, after 6-9 months on a gluten-free diet it will still be negative. Even very sensitive celiacs will eventually read negative on a gluten-free diet; it's important NOT to be gluten-free if you want an accurate test. Often negative results are just labelled...
  8. I'm in PA and our Giant has been carrying Pamela's mixes (CHECK THE DATE) and cookies for several months -- they also have Mrs. May's peanut snacks (with the diabetic/low carb stuff --go figure) and Genisoy bars and Amy's stuff. I asked this week for them to carry the gluten-free mac and cheese and they are working on it. Here this was a result of a new Wegman...
  9. For those of you within travelling distance of Hershey, PA, the GIG Harrisburg Chapter is sponsoring a Gluten-Free day at HersheyPark on July 30th. Your admission price gets you into the park AND a catered gluten-free picnic lunch. I got the flyer from a celiac friend up the street (it's a very small world) so I might not have the sponsor correct; it doesn...
  10. If she is celiac and untreated, it's very likely that the damage to her small intestine's villi is causing lactose intolerance that will go away once she is gluten-free. If you are celiac, your children need to be tested. If they are celiac and not on a gluten-free diet, it will eventually catch up with them -- and THEN the discomfort, illness, etc...
  11. Four months is barely enough time to figure out which way is up, let alone feel chipper about it! Sounds like you are having a normal reaction. Don't expect too much too soon. We (son and husband) were dx over a year ago and I want to assure you that you WILL be able to do this, it just takes some time -- more like 9 months -- to feel like you've "got the...

    ARCHIVED Applebees

We haven't been to our Outback yet, since the Ruby Tuesday's in town has been so fabulous about accomodating our celiac half. The fries (at least at ours) are gluten-free and they make my DH/DS gorgeous bunless burgers and serve them with the foil still underneath them (the first time our server said "so you know we really did listen to you") with extra veggies...
  13. My son's favorites: (he's also allergic to eggs) Glutano pizza-flavored breadsticks dipped in Contadina pizza quick sauce Lettuce leaves with Oscar Meyer bologna and america cheese rolled up and skewered together Quesadillas (two corn tortillas with cheese, whatever, in the middle, heat it in a skillet, quarter and pack) Gogurt Miss Roben's...
  14. I was just so excited I needed to tell someone -- my guy's bloodwork came back (he was dx last year) and his tTg is only FOUR! Down from 153! His peds GI wants to do an endoscopy in June to check that he is completely healed and then we can address his other complicated medical issues knowing that the celiac is under control So, of course, we are celebrating...
  15. Steroids are sometimes part of treatment for celiacs who are having difficulty recovering. Yes, there are side effects from long-term use, but at this point they are reasonable compared to what you have to gain, IMHO. My son was on very high doses of prednisone, and now is on an immunesuppressant called Prograf. Ask your doctor if he has ever heard of autoimmune...
  16. Awwwww... I feel bad, I haven't been around and didn't know! I'm so glad you are home. FYI -- if you (or anyone else) ever needs any kind of ng tube again (let's hope NOT) ask the nurses for chloroseptic when they place it, and for as long as you have it. Doesn't remove the pain entirely, but for some people it can help take the edge off. Let's pray...
  17. Someone in this forum asked for this recipe, but didn't give me an address ~ so I'm posting here, hoping this won't get moved to recipes..... Okay -- homemade, nutrient dense gluten-free granola bars: 4 C crushed flaked gluten-free cereal (like Amazon crunch) 1.5 C sliced almonds, crushed (put 'em in a bag and whack away) 1C dried fruit (cut...
  18. I found a great recipe in The Kid Friendly Allergy Free Cookbook that we tweaked a little, and it was sooooo good I wanted to share. Basically, you spread a thin layer of hashbrowns tossed with a little olive oil(I shredded 3 potatos--but we only used a 8 x8 pan) in a non-stick pan, bake that for about 15 min. at 450 (until the edges are crispy and brown...
  19. I don't think it's very typical to have annual tests once you are symptom free. Everyone reacts differently but it sure sounds to me like she was "glutenated" at the restaurants. Taco Bell probably has flour flying around the air, let alone on the counter staffs' hands! I didn't even think any of their food was gluten-free, but that's just my assumption....
  20. They're here! (Well, almost) Information about ordering the teal "making tracks for celiac" wrist bands in both adult and/or child sizes is available at the Un. of Maryland's www.celiaccenter.org website. Bands are $2
  21. Welcome Kenda! My son (11) and husband both are celiac. My son was dx after a very long and dramatic crisis, my husband after being tested. My son has had several 'scopes and they aren't so bad for children, they put them under (and you can ask to have them sedated before any IV is put in) with few ill effects. My husband had "ambiguous" blood tests...
  22. A positive tissue transglutimate (or tTg) test is generally anything over 24, with a "weak positive" being anything between 20-24 and negative anything under 20. I have seen some doctors say anything over 30 is positive. 139 is very high, and a re-test of 24.7 certainly shows you've done a great job staying truly gluten-free. It can take quite a while for...
  23. Today's menu from Casa De Momi Breakfast: AllergFree bar (we call 'em birdseed bars), glass of milk/Boost mixed together, one banana, and a peach YoPlait yogurt Snack: skittles. because he can.... and a Polly 0 twistum string cheese and some homemade granola bars (peanut butter, corn syrup, almonds, choc chips, amazon flakes). They must have 90...
  24. We did this last year, as has another friend of ours who is not celiac, but has several anaphylactic allergies. Most camps are ready to deal with this and we had great success. I met with the cook and camp director prior to my son's arrival so they had an actual person to deal with. At Scout camp, Boy Scouts work the summer in the kitchen so I also made...
  25. Here I am! (long story involving a house full of sick people....) I used a Pamela's pastry mix, and then tried a coffee cake from Bette Hagman's original book. Both were kind of grainy and dry, but I thought maybe it was the egg substitute, so I tried again with tofu (which often works well as an egg sub) and it was like lead. So now I am actually looking...
