  1. As always Richard, thanks for finding this so the rest of us don't have to hunt it down. I'm glad to hear that the fries were always gluten-free, as McD's said. I appreciate them being responsive enough to test them again, and give a statement to that effect. If people are still willing to believe the worst, then I guess that's their perogative. joanna
  2. But you just said it yourself -- McDonald's is a corporation interested in profit. They aren't a charity, a non-profit or a soup kitchen. While we want them to be as accurate as possible, demanding that they be infallible will only hurt us. It's not immoral or illegal for a company to consider it's bottom line, and lawsuits work against us. Any company...
  3. Yes, unless the tests McD's is running (saw that on CNN this morning -- must have been 5 minutes about celiac disease and the lawsuits) turn up gluten in the fries. joanna
  4. I made our first batch of Namaste blondies today --eeewwwww! All greasy and slimy coming out, then cooling off to cement.. Obviously we did something wrong since everyone else has raved about them.... 1 cup oil, 1/4c water, right? We reduced the oil a little (it just seemed like sooo much) and here's the problem, I think -- we used egg replacer and flax...
  5. Also Gluten Free 4 Me, in central Pa. ; stuff baked by a real-live woman (mom of 2 celiac kids) that tastes fabulous...... joanna
  6. There's also a gluten-free bakery in McVeytown, which is kinda far from you (north of Harrisburg, between Hbg and State College) but does do mailorder. You can find it on the web, the name is Gluten Free 4 Me...And if you ever happen to be in Pittsburgh, there are two Whole Foods there, plus in the metro PHilly area are many many Wegman's... Joanna
  7. My hikers re-pack Mrs. Leeper's chicken alfredo into ziplocs, and use a JetBoil to cook it up again. Good stuff, not too heavy (okay, the can of chicken is a pain there) and fairly nutrient dense. You can use dried milk or just water. They also do Bob's Red Mill Really Good gluten-free Breakfast Stuff (okay, so the name might not be quite right) and use potato...
  8. Well, alrighty then! When I talked to McD's, they told me the oil company wasn't a name I was going to get from them -- but I think Cynthia (as always) has a point. This appears to be evolving into an issue of the FDA granting exemptions and the suppliers applying. Time will tell whether McDonald's will decide to require that ~ and they are the only ones...
  9. I was diagnosed with hypothyroid about 18 months ago, after suffering from many of the symptoms you list. I would not have known if we hadn't had a bunch of bloodwork done following my son's celiac dx, and the help of a good ob/gyn. I thought I was overstressed (multiple family cancers, my son's illness, my own biopsy, etc..) and would just "get over it"...
  10. My son had an ng tube while he was hospitalized, for about 4 weeks. He stabilized enough that he was able to convince his peds gi team to let him DRINK the Peptamen Jr. rather than continue the ng tube. Very skeptical, they were -- but they underestimated his determination to NOT have the tube It worked fine, even drinking 9 cans a day (which is an awful...
  11. IT WAS ON CNN!!!! (okay, kinda....) I have Headline News on-- they just ran a story about McDonald's french fries, and how the new labelling law requirements revealed that there is much more trans-fat in the fries than McDonald's was saying. You should have seen me yelling at my TV! The "feedback" email address for HeadlineNews/CNN is: www.cnn.com...
  12. I agree with Richard -- these are the same fries they have always been. McDs obviously "announced" this in the quietest possible way, which I imagine at some point they might regret but that doesn't make it a deliberate lie; that's capitalism for you. I don't understand, and am looking for two specific answers: How is it possible to "process" gluten...
  13. I thought maybe we should separate the discussion from the advocacy issues, in the interest of brevity. So if you've called the company, maybe we can compare notes. I called this morning (1-800-244-6227) and asked *were the fries gluten-free or not? NOT *were they always unsafe? "the formula has not changed" *why the change? The new labelling laws...
  14. Just in case any of you parents or newbies don't read outside this "department", the furor about McDonald's french fries is going on in the eating-out/restaurant section of the main forum. Didn't want anyone to miss it! Joanna
  15. I think we don't want to derail the thread too much with contemplating whether people should be "hysterical" or not, or whether people's original "eat there " or "don't eat there" stance turns out to be correct. Sorta sounds like "I told you so". .... If McD's had listed them as non-gluten-free, like Bk and Wendy's, I would have lived without them. Since...
  16. I am McUpset, McFurious, McSad and McCrying Like nini, this was my child's last and most favorite treat. Thru the hospital ("can I still have Mcdonald's fries") thru the scopes ("at least there are always fries") thru the vacations burdened with a bazillion coolers of food, at least we could still have FRIES together! I sent them a THANK YOU...
  17. My son's pre-dx Ttg was 152, after 3 months gluten-free it was 75, and after 20 months it was 8. My husband's Ttg was 24, a "weak positive" and his GI wanted to scope him. My son's peds GI said that in her opinion, there's no such thing as a weak positive -- non-celiacs are clearly negative, celiacs (silent ones included) are positive or weakly positive...
  18. I don't mean to be a downer here, but people who don't understand a clear request to wash their hands are not going to be much better with clever analogies. Sometimes those analogies just convince non-believers that we are, in fact, over-reacting. (And of course, you are not) They see them as dramatic. You can't MAKE them believe it's important, you can just...
  19. I know I've said this before, but your church should be the very first place to help you and the very last one you give up on! Our nursery, preschool, and elementary programs are vigilant in providing snacks that are allergen-free for everybody -- no worries about x-contamination. Our nursery parents are told to only provide a drink if they wish, no food...
  20. You have to read the entire label of everything she is going to eat, looking for anything that contains wheat, barley (that is usually the "malt" added to breakfast cereal) , rye or (for most celiacs) oats (which are not, technically, gluten-containing, but are so highly likely to be contaminated by other grains while getting to you, that they may as well...
  21. My son was 10 when he was dx, but had been sooooo sick that he didn't care about food anymore. He did have a grieving period, though, which we approached with plain ol' matter-of-factness: "Yes, I know you can't have that. Ever. That does suck. But you will live without chicken nuggets". He made a list of the things he would really miss and we worked on finding...
  22. As a parent of a celiac child, I want my family to: 1. know the basics: no wheat, barley, rye or oats -- even if they NEVER read a label. 2. give me a strict "gluten free" zone in their kitchen if I am visiting for more than a day. Only our food touches it. 3. NOT cook something that they are "sure" is gluten-free and insist that we eat it...
  23. OMG! This HAPPENED over Christmas to us! My BIL says "can't he have whatever he wants? It's Christmas!" And my beautiful, clever, witty 12 year old responds: "What I WANT is to not puke all over Grandma's tablecloth. Is that okay with you?" joanna
  24. We are not PSU grads -- but we live here in Happy Valley! It is just NUTS here and we are sooooo excited for all the fine young men who represent the university so well. GO STATE!!! joanna
  25. The peanut butter blossom recipe is posted over in baking/cooking -- I can't take any credit it for it, I just used one somebody else posted. The gingerbread guys were made with a Miss Roben's graham cracker mix with molasses subsituted for honey, and ginger added. Merry Christmas everyone (or the holiday of your choosing:) joanna
