ARCHIVED Thanksgiving Dinner Again
ryebaby0 replied to whitelacegal's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I must have lucked out. My MIL wants us for Thanksgiving, which is fine; I had my husband tell her that we will bring food for my son so she doesn't have to worry about contamination issues (from her unbelievably unkept kitchen -- crumb-orama) and everyone can relax. She was fine with that, and said she would let us know what she was making, so we could bring... -
ARCHIVED Cold, Joint Pain, Fatigue
ryebaby0 replied to DawnI's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son first presented with very rheumatic joints (hands, wrists, ankles, feet,) and those symptoms have subsided on a thoroughly gluten-free diet -- but rheumatoid arthritis is one of those autoimmune diseases that are not uncommon in celiacs. If you have faith in your pediatrician, you might ask. If you are near a big hospital they should have a pediatric... -
ARCHIVED Christmas Baking
ryebaby0 replied to foxyfire24's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I was thinking about this too! I know one thing we will be making is the gluten-free pantry mix for Old Fashioned Cookies. Mix them up and roll them in colored sugar (red/green) to look festive, they are great cookies and NOBODY will know they are gluten-free. (We are egg-free too, so I make them with silken tofu!) Another thing could be melted white chocolate... -
My son and husband are celiac disease; my other son and I tested completely negative and are asymptomatic -- but I was dx w/ Hashimoto's about 3 months ago. (they discovered that while working on gyn problems....) Does anybody know if I should think about having my celiac disease screens run again? joanna

ARCHIVED Bloodwork Question...
ryebaby0 replied to stomica's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Your allergist is correct -- elevated IgG for gliadin is not necessarily specific for celiac. EMA is both very specific for celiac and a very good predictor (so a negative means negative most of the time...). IgA can be negative because you are celiac and don't have any, or negative because you aren't celiac at all. If your daughter's came back elevated,... -
ARCHIVED Gingerbread Houses
ryebaby0 replied to DawnI's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Our school makes them with graham crackers "glued" to pint milk cartons; we're just going to use Glutano CrispBreads instead of crackers. Don't forget that the candies used will need to be gluten-free -- unless you are REALLY sure that your child won't absentmindedly put one in their mouth! (which is the best part of a gingerbread house, anyway....) joanna -
Yes, children's has a motility clinic -- it's one of their areas of expertise. Through the experience of hospitalization we met almost all of the Pittsburgh GI peds at Children's Hospital, and while I personally liked some of them more than others, they are all really good at what they do. Good luck in your journey
-
Not to barge in , but have you contacted the peds GI department at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh? Or did he have the SBS surgeries there? I know they do lots of work with short bowel kids and the GI department has it's own nutritionist, who we see whenever we have a GI doc appointment. They have a really good website, too, with contact information, but...

ARCHIVED Refusing To Try Diet
ryebaby0 replied to ADevoto's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son is 11 (10 when dx) and I agree, based on what I've been reading this year on the boards, you may be surprised at how his behavior issues change when he is gluten-free. But you are going nuts now! Of course, he's mad, and unhappy. But you wouldn't let him play in traffic, and he can't eat gluten. A non-negotiable. For us, what worked in the long... -
ARCHIVED What To Do For Birthday?
ryebaby0 replied to Sharon C.'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
When we have big bunches of people, we choose to serve buffet style, with several choices of entree (hotdogs, burgers, ziti, salad). My son/husband's food is made gluten-free and served to them separately, but it appears to be the same. Or we'll keep all the gluten food on a separate sideboard, so the celiac disease people can serve from the buffet without... -
ARCHIVED Cheese And Near-cheese
ryebaby0 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Is CheezWhiz gluten-free? I thought I found it on a list, but of course now I can't . Same problem with Polly-O string cheese. I know they're Kraft products, so all I get on the phone is some guy reading me their "Kraft has a policy of plainly listing....." yadda yadda . Yet, there is no ALLERGENS: panel --- and obviously both of these items contain MILK... -
ARCHIVED Sodium Fluoride Chewables
ryebaby0 replied to ashlee's mom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Take the fluoride back to the pharmacist, ask them to give you the orginial packaging or photocopy the ingredient panel. Either they -- or you -- should call the company and ask for any clarification of ingredients. Our fluoride tabs are gluten-free, but that doesn't mean anything to you! If the pharmacist is going to call, be there when they do it. (so you... -
ARCHIVED What Should I Do
ryebaby0 replied to scaredparent's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This is the worst part of diagnosis -- the waiting, the panic, the grieving, the worry. Consider yourself lucky that your doctors thought of celiac as a problem. It is also easier to manage a child's food allergy if they are very young. But a healthy life is precious, and worth the effort. My advice is to go slow, don't read too much (it just gets so overwhelming... -
ARCHIVED My First Post- About My Son
ryebaby0 replied to Sharon C.'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son always loved oyster crackers -- lived on them. The first months out of the hospital, I couldn't even be in the same aisle in the grocery store as those crackers. When I eventually did, I cried like a lunatic, right there in the store. And it felt good. The school is legally obligated to accomodate your son. You will find, however, that is simply... -
Even my mom wanted to feed him pasta -- I'm like, Mom, that's a wheat product. It was, honestly, funny. People always think they know what's in baked goods, too "Oh, that's okay, there's no wheat in it. Just flour...." But let's be fair. I had never heard of Celiac disease, ever, and I'm from a family of allergic/ill people. I never knew Rice Krispies...

ARCHIVED My First Post- About My Son
ryebaby0 replied to Sharon C.'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son was dx almost a year ago, and only after several months of illness followed by 3 months in the hospital. It can be so scary at first, and I can't believe that we've arrived at a place where we do gluten-free as naturally as can be. You will get there too. The "some things remain the same" can be a big issue for kids. Two things we did that helped... -
ARCHIVED She Gets It
ryebaby0 replied to mdixon's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Tonight at supper, my husband said he was going to binge on Italian bread prior to his next bunch of tests -- first round were equivocal, but it looks like celiac disease -- and my 11 y.o. pats him on the hand "Dad--don't worry. Just stick with me and I'll show you the ropes" -
ARCHIVED Help.....vanilla Extract?
ryebaby0 replied to Donna F's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
..another advantage to powdered vanilla is that is has a much stronger flavor, so it can help with that gluten-free flour-blandness problem..... -
ARCHIVED Amys Pizza
ryebaby0 replied to terri's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My son was missing these little pizza rollups we used to eat (made with pillsbury crescent rolls) so we invented a new kind that are actually very easy and good -- we use _pie crust_ (Miss Roben's), cut it into big squares and make pizza turnovers. (I suppose they are calzones, really) If you roll the dough between plastic, and then use the plastic to fold... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Cooking Schools
ryebaby0 replied to hthorvald's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I live in central PA--I gotta believe Whole Foods will have a class someplace near you. I wish we had them out here, although while we were in Baltimore I heard there was a hotel that actually had a Whole Foods convenience -style store inside!! Wouldn't that be wonderful? Joanna -
Wow! That's WONDERFUL!!! I'm so excited for your good news -- and no new allergies, too! A good day, indeed..... Joanna

ARCHIVED Gluten-free Cooking Schools
ryebaby0 replied to hthorvald's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Our school district has community education classes (computers, languages, cooking, etc.) and just started offering a gluten-free cooking class. So many people signed up that they had 3 sections of it, and now have added a Gluten Free II class for more ""advanced" cooking. You might call a local university or school district and see if they might be interested... -
ARCHIVED Baking Gf With Egg Replacer?
ryebaby0 replied to jaycee30's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm confused -- is your son gluten-free now, and you don't want to do a challenge, or is he not gluten-free and you'd rather not go down that road without a dx? Anyhow, my 11 yr old also is celiac and egg allergic. Egg replacer works fairly well in most things, but not all. The gluten-free pantry mixes usually have an alternate egg-free direction, and... -
ARCHIVED Visiting Friends And Relatives W/o Cd
ryebaby0 replied to kabowman's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
We just take the food, and either nuke it or whatever. If this is family, they must know about the celiac, right? You can't just hope they have food you can eat, although certainly it's nice to eat what they do have that you can have -- but to rely on that would be silly. I think they might be relieved to know they aren't going to inadvertantly harm you.... -
ARCHIVED Help With Elimination Diet!
ryebaby0 replied to Alexolua's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Ahh, we did this....started with (I kid you not) a diet entirely of rice, chicken, olive oil, and a enteral feeding solution. After three weeks, once a week we added a new food -- potatos, spinach, carrots, beef, watermelon, and then peanuts (he'd been RAST tested so we knew those were okay). Next were a bunch more veggies, and finally soy to replace the...
