  1. i am getting foggier by the day here. teaching is the worst, i can't hold on to a train of thought for long enough to finish communicating it! my students and i laugh about it. today it bordered on being too much, though. maybe i will share just a bit with them about what is going on, so they don't think i'm the absent-minded professor! my fatigue/fog...
  2. Hi, glutenfreeheather! when i first got diagnosed, the dr's office gave me a long list of no-nos. then the dietitian gave me about the same list... and told me msg, grain alcohols, gums, emulsifiers, maltodextrin, etc. were out of the question. her information was outdated, or at best incomplete. i cut out/worried over a lot of stuff initially that i didn...
  3. i wholeheartedly agree! there are just times when it's too hard to be positive. i'm all for complaining. sometimes you just need to get it out! i'm not exactly midlife -- but i did have mildish symptoms and not for that long, so i feel you on the shock of it all. and i seem to be more sensitive to gluten now than before, after a little over a month gluten...
  4. i'm learning so much about celiac disease on here! you guys have been super helpful. i have a new question. i keep reading about brain fog as a pre-diagnosis symptom/gluten reaction and i'm wondering exactly how you'd define it. i guess it sounds self-explanatory, but can somebody give me some examples of how it feels? i have been super out of it lately...
  5. Hi! i talked to a really nice guy on the phone last week about my Bath & Body Works Anti-Bacterial Deep Cleansing Hand Soap (flavor: Kitchen Spice). he said "they are formulated to be gluten-free". I had been using some antibacterial lotion in the kitchen as well and when i asked about it, he said that it had wheat germ oil in it. i felt so ridiculous...
  6. definitely had my second gluten-free anxiety dream last night... in the first one, several nights ago, i was in a cafeteria, all my friends were already seated and chowing down, and i was scanning and re-scanning the menu trying desperately to find something i could eat. but everything was breaded! and my mom (who i'd thought could help me) was nowhere...
  7. mmmm.... rotel dip! everyday it seems like i hear of a recipe i hadn't thought about making in a long time just because i'd assumed it was forbidden! i didn't know Velveeta was ok. i need to get my crock pot from home and bring it down here.
  8. oh no. i just bought this book and was pretty excited about it. i haven't gotten very far at all into it yet, so maybe that is why i haven't spotted the inaccuracies (that, or my own ignorance). what books has Danna Korn written? i'd like to check into those if they are better.
  9. guess i'll have to check into Bare Escentuals. as far as Estee Lauder goes, i guess it is what you'd call a CYA statement... what i'm finding with so many products these days. i only asked about my moisturizer, and they wrote back and told me it did contain gluten. my cleanser and toner i just read the backs of them and they don't have the offending ingredients...
  10. i need to vent!!! i am so darn frustrated! last weekend i spent my time cleaning out my kitchen of all gluten. this weekend i have moved onto my health and beauty products. in some cases, i have a lot of money invested in these products, so i'm trying to check them out as carefully as possible. way too many of these wretched manufacturers have a "figure...
  11. i'm new to all this, so it's good to see other strategies for coping with the ickiness! first i call one of my very good friends (i rotate them out so no one has to deal with a crying Laurel every time she talks to me!) and i rant for a few minutes about how awful i feel. after the phone call i lie on the couch and let my cat put his warm paw on my arm...
  12. hi, celiac3270! i'd love a copy! mycatisgftoo@yahoo.com thanks a million!
  13. i want to know too! i had tummy troubles, nausea and fatigue when school started a couple of weeks ago, then i felt better for about 2 days, then the symptoms came back, then they went away again, then they came back, and i'm finally feeling okay now. i have tracked down a couple things i was using (moisturizer, shampoo, etc) that contained gluten, but...
  14. ravenwoodglass, thanks for the neutrogena info! i am in the market for new haircare stuff, since i found out my redken stuff has wheat ingredients. also i wrote bumble and bumble, but they have yet to get back to me. i do indeed have a 4-footed friend. but actually my avatar is of my dog at home in Alabama. i got a kitten this summer named Frank Thomas...
  15. hello, friends! Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama (my home state) and the damage and people affected are all i can think about at the moment... ... but i'm going to take a break from watching the news coverage to ask something that's been on my mind as far as cross contamination goes. when i told friends and family that i was still getting sick and...
  16. Hi! Welcome! i'm 24 and i just found out that i have celiac disease about 3 weeks ago. right now i am feeling like i stick out among friends... i am not drinking alchol right now for a while until i can get all the gluten sources in my life figured out, and i'm also not going to eat out for at least a month, having had a couple of bad experiences here lately...
  17. thanks, guys, for your replies! today is Gluten Free Day! i have been to the farmers market and am going to cook a fabulous dinner later on, as a reward for all the work i'm about to do in the kitchen. i think the physical act of boxing up all the stuff that could make me sick will go a long way towards making me feel better emotionally. i've been so irritable...
  18. How far do y'all go to avoid the possibility of gluten? i'm still pretty new to all this. it's been a few weeks and i thought i had it down, more or less. today i discovered that Coke Zero has gluten in it, and lo and behold, that is what i drank off and on all this summer. i'm so frustrated!! i know it takes a while to get good at avoiding the right stuff...
  19. otnemem, i had the same kind of bowel habits you're describing, in the morning and controlled with Immodium... and I improved greatly on the gluten-free diet, probably about two weeks into it... i couldn't get completely rid of the D though until recently. i think this is because i was ingesting gluten without knowing it, because it took me awhile to figure...
  20. Elonwy, do you know the name of his lip balm? i am starting to worry about things i might be using that aren't gluten-free! thanks!
  21. if the disease is something you are born with, then i was asymptomatic for about 24 years. i never considered myself as someone who had stomach/digestive problems, or really anything in the way of health problems. in may i woke up one morning and had diarrhea. it continued in the mornings, sometimes every few days and sometimes everyday. i felt pretty awful...
  22. I'm with you, ShortStuff2309... i feel a strong need to vent lately too... i've been gluten-free for over a month, but the sight of pizza makes me want to cry, and people continue to eat it in front of me! i can't even watch a Pizza Hut commercial. and that's just one of the things i miss -- there are oh, so many more. i take snacks places but the truth...
